But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.
Wow, great project Matt it's beautiful. When you were at the jointer you said you gave the parts a rest before running them through again, I'm curious why?
April Wilkerson Thank you April! As wood is removed, tensions are released and you expose new fibers. The resting period allows them time to destress (read: warp). The more iterations, the lower the amount of movement per iteration. I usually do 2-3 iterations and that leave me with work pieces that stay flat and straight.
Matthew Cremona Yeah I was always taught to do rough milling and let it sit for a day or two then cut to final dimensions.... Living here in SoCal, we have average weather and humidity... I always laugh because all the disclaimers on glues and such always say works best at 70 degrees with 60-70 percent humidity...Guess they make that stuff for soCal. Also I have seen wood after I rough cut it potato chip to the point where I thought I was going to be useless left it a day or so more and it go back to relatively straight so I can do final milling.
Thanks Matthew Cremona & April Wilkerson...i was gonna ask the same thing...do you still get alot of movement though if you're in a hot state like Texas? I live close to houston....i guess the humidity would be a big factor....the other thing i was wondering was how many total hours you had in that piece? Again...great work.
Steve Taylor You're right, it has a lot to do with the humidity. With milling rough boards, you're trying to change the natural state of the board and keep it in the state that you want (flat). This was somewhere in the 30-40 hour range.
Matthew, I hope your children cherish their beautiful solid walnut furniture when they grow to adulthood. What you have made is heirloom quality and worthy of display in any home, great or small. (I am sure they will be very proud of their papa.)
Love is very nice to see the love with which is built this bassinet, really wonderful, in a few years your child can check how your father put all his love and dedication for him. My sincere congratulations, a big hug from Spain.
Yes the cradle ROCKS! I think it will be many years before JR fully understands and appreciates the workmanship, skill and care that went into making his furniture. You have created an heirloom.
I had this on and the wife asked what I was watching. She got sucked into this, it's so damn good. Congrats on the second child and keep up the good work.
....a piece that will remain special for yrs to come, well done! Love the video and commentary you do with your projects. Thanks for sharing with us...
B...U...T..Full Matt! Love the back story behind the tree the cherry came from. This piece is something JR could one day use for his children, and have the digital recording of how their grandfather Matthew built it. Now that is magical!
How enjoyable it was to watch this video. I look forward to watching your other videos. Your attention to detail I remarkable. I was amazed at how you began with the roughest cut timbers and turned them into a work of art. Thank you.
Congratulations to you and your wife on the new baby. Awesome project, beautiful presentation and remarkable woodworking skills. I enjoy all your videos. Thanks for all your efforts.
I used that same beam saw but I was On custom home builds. Now I'm starting the smaller ,finer things. Love to watch your work now I just need to retool most of my shop.
This was a very thought out build and video. The length of the video fit perfectly with a thorough explanation of each step. Excellent project as usual!
Thank you Zack! I acquired it all myself. If you're interested in the shop evolution, check out this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL0dX5redvVZTV2pV8EjhCKgVoBhtnHDzN The My Past Shops video shows my beginings
Matthew i just wanted to thank you for this video. You have inspired me to make my own bassinet. I copied your design loosely with scrap pallet wood and treated lumber. I am very pleased with how it came out. Thank you again you are amazing.
Very nice Matt. You didn't just make a Bassinet...you made a family heirloom. Clearly this was a very long and well thought out project. I saw your intern helping (ha!). Absolutely beautiful. You are very talented. Your floor rocks too! :) Douglas
Beautiful work Matt. Truly an inspiration. Making furniture for my children has been some of my favorite projects. It looks like you had a great time also.
Wow it came out great! I like the idea of tracing the opening for the side panels then adding a certain amount on all 4 sides to make sure that panel fits perfectly. I've made the mistake before of trusting the measurements vs reality! Thanks for the tip!
Matt, you are my hero. Great build. I'm about to head to my shop and bang out a baby gate. Need it ASAP. Our baby can climb the ones we have now, haha.
i know every time that it began to rock i could see a smile forming, yep matt you did a great job, it makes me want to have some more babies just so i can build one of these, a great build, and made with my favorite hardwood...beautiful walnut.....
Hey Matt! Just started following you after hearing about you on the wood whisperer. Thanks for the great videos. Wish I had enough time to build this before my 2nd baby coming in February. Congrats on your new little one.
put your audio in one sequence before adding a denoiser to avoid the sudden burst of static at the start of each clip. just a tip! Awesome work Matt looks amazing.
ausguitarist Thanks! That's been frustrating me so much. For whatever reason, Premiere thinks: "I'll just let this clip play for a few seconds before kicking on the denoiser". Didn't have that issue with 2014.
Thanks for sharing the whole project with us, I was looking forward to see the full build... After seeing all those shop updates.. Reclaimed wood projects seems to me to be some of the most gratifying, I find... What kind of black marker is that? The long pointy one..
The shop lighting is a lot better can see your builds a lot better. I don't need a baby rocker but i see a lot of other areas this would be a great idea That saw is huge !!
Well done...not only is the piece beautiful but will be an heirloom because it was built so well it will last through the ages. I have two nieces both expecting and I wanted to build them a rocker and this is perfect...hope you don't mind if I steal your design and build them...won't be using walnut possibly oak or clear pine depending if they want a stained or painted rocker. Great job..I subscribed so I can see more of what you do!
Wow!!!! Matt not only is the Rocker amazing and your design and craftsmanship is top notch... but I also feel like I got a serious training course in milling rough and I do mean rough lumber... amazing video, great job... Oh and JR is super cute.
Man, that's some beautiful wood! I also like that it has some story too it :) The project ended up looking amazing, I especially love the finish on it!
Earth magnets on the rocker stops and rockers would lock them in place. You could add some to the bottom of the slats too and store the stops there when not in use.
Matt, great build, I bet this is probably one of your proudest projects now. Hopefully your son will be able to pass it on to his kid... or if not, be at the point where he can honestly say "I will make one better than Dad" LOL. How could either scenario be bad?
I'm a bit late to the game Matt, but this was a beautiful build. If you happened to find an appropriate place to store it, it can become a family heirloom!

That beam saw though.... Craziness. Excellent craftsmanship as always Matt.
Jay Bates At least he will be safe for the Zombie Apocalypse.
HANDCRAFTED CREATIVE Gonna need a long extension cord
Jay Bates Seriously. I'm terrified enough by using just regular circular saws. I didn't even know a beam saw was a thing!
Dave Starr How else are you going to cut through a 6x6 with one pass? :)
Matthew Cremona Handsaw?
Wow, great project Matt it's beautiful. When you were at the jointer you said you gave the parts a rest before running them through again, I'm curious why?

That will be an heirloom piece that will be handed down many generations. Excellent craftsmanship as always and it was a joy to watch the build.
***** Thank you Michael!

Matt, a beautiful piece that will no doubt be handed down for generations. What a precious child. You have truly Been blessed. Rick
AD4MRick Thank you so much, Rick!
Love is very nice to see the love with which is built this bassinet, really wonderful, in a few years your child can check how your father put all his love and dedication for him. My sincere congratulations, a big hug from Spain.
Love how you work around the defects and cracks in the wood. Spectacular project!
Garage workshop Thank you!
WOW!! Excellent Job. What a great project for your son, JR. I can see this project being passed down the generations. Thanks for posting this build.
Yes the cradle ROCKS! I think it will be many years before JR fully understands and appreciates the workmanship, skill and care that went into making his furniture. You have created an heirloom.
Thank you! Yes, I think it will be quite some time :)
Beautifully done Matt! I’ve watched your slab and salvage videos off and on for a couple of years but this earns a subscription. Thanks!
I had this on and the wife asked what I was watching. She got sucked into this, it's so damn good.
Congrats on the second child and keep up the good work.
Thank you John!
That piece of work needs to stay in the family for generations for sure!

Rick L Thank you Rick!
B...U...T..Full Matt! Love the back story behind the tree the cherry came from. This piece is something JR could one day use for his children, and have the digital recording of how their grandfather Matthew built it. Now that is magical!
the design and the realisation are both tremendous...well done!
Thank you!
How enjoyable it was to watch this video. I look forward to watching your other videos. Your attention to detail I remarkable. I was amazed at how you began with the roughest cut timbers and turned them into a work of art. Thank you.
Thank you!
A beautiful project Matt with a great purpose!
Also, I love seeing you wield that beam saw!
Peter Brown Thank you Peter! I love that thing!
I enjoy watching the pride you take and your fine workmanship in your projects.
Beautiful build. I love the sound a sharp chisel makes when paring air dried Walnut. One of my favorite woods to work.
I made a cradle a few days ago , and if I only had your idea I wud of made it like that , the rocker is great , professional work sir.
Congratulations to you and your wife on the new baby. Awesome project, beautiful presentation and remarkable woodworking skills. I enjoy all your videos. Thanks for all your efforts.
Chuck Bell Thank you so much Chuck!
I used that same beam saw but I was On custom home builds. Now I'm starting the smaller ,finer things. Love to watch your work now I just need to retool most of my shop.
This was a very thought out build and video. The length of the video fit perfectly with a thorough explanation of each step. Excellent project as usual!
Make_Whatever Thank you so much!!
this guy is for real. Awesome set up, awesome skill and awesome workmanship Matt. This is so impressive, your patience is unreal.
Matt, was this shop and tools passed down to you or did you acquire all of it yourself?
Thank you Zack! I acquired it all myself. If you're interested in the shop evolution, check out this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PL0dX5redvVZTV2pV8EjhCKgVoBhtnHDzN The My Past Shops video shows my beginings
Matthew i just wanted to thank you for this video. You have inspired me to make my own bassinet. I copied your design loosely with scrap pallet wood and treated lumber. I am very pleased with how it came out. Thank you again you are amazing.
You make it all seem so easy, each step is just followed by the next fluidly. I wish just one of my projects went that way.
Levi Fuller Thank you Levi! Keep in mind, editing has a lot to do with the fluidity :)
It looks so nice Matthew
Nick Ferry Thanks Nick!
I showed my wife this- she hit me and said, "Why weren't you into woodworking 6 years ago"...
Geek Builders hahaha! wives are great!
That's one beast of a beam saw! Beautiful work as always.
Mark Hanson (Mark's Workshop Creations) Thank you Mark!
A very nice heirloom bassinet Matt. And a very belated congratulations to you both on the birth of your baby.

Artwork. Very nicely done. Grats on your baby as well. It is nice to see a RUclipsr not using pocket screws.
Thank you so much Chris!
Slab to finished product- this was terrific. My wife especially liked the anti-rocking shoes, a nice touch
Very nice Matt. You didn't just make a Bassinet...you made a family heirloom. Clearly this was a very long and well thought out project. I saw your intern helping (ha!). Absolutely beautiful. You are very talented. Your floor rocks too! :) Douglas
RetroWeld Thank you Douglas! Little JR was in there helping carry the slab too :)
Beautiful work Matt. Truly an inspiration. Making furniture for my children has been some of my favorite projects. It looks like you had a great time also.
Make Crazydays Thank you! This was easily my most rewarding project.
Beautiful build Matt - I like the way you figured the splay angles
The ShavingWood Workshop Thank you Tommy!!
Art, beautiful. Was worried you were going to miss and whack the side when you were knocking off your cedar clamping cleats....
***** Thanks Tyler! Fear of hitting your project makes your swing more accurate :)
Wow it came out great! I like the idea of tracing the opening for the side panels then adding a certain amount on all 4 sides to make sure that panel fits perfectly. I've made the mistake before of trusting the measurements vs reality! Thanks for the tip!
when JR grows up you can tell him how Daddy used to play with dowels....lol... Awesome work Matt! It should last several lifetimes.
Rob Shamel lol!! Thanks Rob!
Matt, you are my hero. Great build. I'm about to head to my shop and bang out a baby gate. Need it ASAP. Our baby can climb the ones we have now, haha.
Brian McCauley haha! Thanks Brian! You'd better get on that. I have a little time before I need to have some of those :)
i know every time that it began to rock i could see a smile forming, yep matt you did a great job, it makes me want to have some more babies just so i can build one of these, a great build, and made with my favorite hardwood...beautiful walnut.....

Greg Teagle Thanks! He seems to enjoy sleeping in there--of course not for more than an hour and a half increments yet...

Matt, great build, I bet this is probably one of your proudest projects now. Hopefully your son will be able to pass it on to his kid... or if not, be at the point where he can honestly say "I will make one better than Dad" LOL. How could either scenario be bad?
Jake Johnston Thanks Jake! I hadn't thought of the second scenario but I think I prefer it :)
Awesome work Matt, mabe your next video should be a workshop cleanup and maybe a mitersaw station instead of the floor, once again excellent work
Awesome job...I'm just a beginner and your work is motivation for me. How do you stay so busy and so motivated with a family?
