RIP Dave Swarbrick. Legendary violinist from Fairport Convention, who helped Ed Alleyne-Johnson design and build his famous Purple Electric Violin, carved with a kitchen knife and a jig-saw.
Did he?? Ed is a Scouser like me and in interview ( this is probably his first violin) he carved it out of a breadboard when he was about 15 with a kitchen knife and his dad's help :) .I' he spoken to him many ,many times when he's been busking back in my old hometown & Chester ,lovely bloke & humble too.I.love Dave Swarbrick & was only listening to Fairport this afternoon ,saw him play in Brighton not long before death at a birthday memorial bash for Sandy
I remember Ed on the folk circuit in Oxford with Fairport convention and etc.... He played in the Oxford folk band called 'raindance' who were fucking awesome ( you can find there stuff on my playlists I think) and he took the folk roots sound with him to new model army .... He still busks in Oxford sometimes too.... Great guy
Maybe it's not just because they are underrated. Could be that NMA isn't US-compatible... Having had (hopefully it ends in 2021!) a potatoe without a brain for president makes NMA even more incompatible... ;-> ruclips.net/video/Ws3nNv7q3jA/видео.html
i saw this fiddler on this tour and he came out in an Auld Hornblowers 3 pronged Hat looking like an Oliver twist fagan type! He did with or without you by U2 as the lead up to Vagabonds! Pure Magic Never thought the two could go together!
Magnificent version of one of their greatest songs. As much as I like the current incarnation of the band, they were at their absolute peak around this time.
ed's great - I remember nigel kennedy (posh boy) always claiming to be the "punk violinist" but quite honestly ed is the hendrix of the violin and wees on him from a great height in my opinion
Mind you Ed went to Liverpool Bluecoat and Oxford Uni - so he's sort of posh too. He was in year below me at Bluecoat. and you are right - he pisses all over Nige :)
Thanx NMA Love & Peace
NMA = crackin' band!!! This song showcases Ed the best, I reckon. Saw him busking in Oxford once and gave him 10p (which was quite a lot in those days - for an impoverished student, anyway...)
they are in my hall of fame. my babysitter got me into these when they supported The Damned. This song was apparently written on my birthday. My tenth birthday. Justin said. That'll do me!
Curiously, for much of their time, much of the followers were mindless punk or skin... I guess that they never listened to the words... Continue to listen for 10 years... He is a poet with music!
@wbiro: I can assure you that it's just a fluke of this recording, I've been deafened at many NMA concerts at Nottingham Rock City - that's might be because I normally stand by the bass cabs though :D
When I youtube ( as in 'when I google') new model army this one seems to have the most hits, like 150k - because of Ed? Unfuckingbelievable! Everyone, you need to go check out some of the other NMA and Justin Sullivan stuff in here! They're just great, ed or no ed!
I can't normally be arsed with the 'how can anyone dislike this video' thing - who gives a shit about likes on youtube. At the same time, 'how could 6 people ...
@erol12345 Yep sure did happen. Apparently too subversive (also they'd not long done a song called 51st State of America which didn't help especially as the video was filmed outside the US Embassy in London and outside Greenham Common airbase which at the time was used to store USA Cruise missiles.)
@truefolkemon Careful when talking about sin, we are all aware of your countrymen's tolerence of things that they themselves don't happen to believe in.
I am pig-sick of the irish making out they are the only folky types. If anyone here has been abroad, the irish are the ones that talk really loud and assume everybody loves them. Me, I love the folk tradition, be it music or stories, but being half english half welsh I don't make a big deal of it.. We all have a folk tradition, it's just that the irish think they own it, which is not true.
This band has been part of my life for three decades.
And always I am delighted!
same

Underrated band. They should be in the rock n' roll Hall of Fame if that mattered a bit.
It's the best band of the world !!!! Justin Sullivan is an incredible musician
Not to mention Ed Alleyne-Johnson who I’ve had the pleasure to have seen play in the streets of York and Leeds many times. Amazing collaboration
NMA is absolutely great, ich liebe diese Band!!
definitely underrated, i sow them in 96 in atlanta in a bar with 40 people

1:19 : "ED ED ED ED"
Wow, this was from 1990? So Ed has been tearing it up on the electric violin for a long time!
Since the late 70's - he was playing that violin when we where in school together in Liverpool
@@tonycook1624 Very cool! Do you have any interesting stories from that time?
@@MistaMagic52 Have ask my bro that one as they were in same class. I was a year ahead. My bro and Ed were also at Oxford at same same too.

sowas ist entspannt 2019. rasierte suffragetten, sowas ist gut.

Seelen Winter OH Gott, vergleich NMA nicht mit dieser Stasi-Band.
Ed Alleyne-Johnson busks in my town of chester....funny eh????

Meet the Brazilian band Terra Celta.
Were was this gig?

It is ridiculous the amount of people who think that fiddly folk music is Irish. I welcome any band that reintroduces it into modern music.
SHARE THIS VIDEO ON FACEBOOK ! OK ? GO NOW !!! ;))
is it me or is ed a little out (as in note) when the rest of the band join in?? the intro's in tune, but he seems to go out a bit at 2:41
i know, i know!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn! It was a slip of the finger, I promise.
glory days...newcastle brown, poppers and weed
wieso...wo ist das problem?
NMA sind geil. Melde dich doch mal Nadja, unter deinen Kommentar bei autamn stehen Kontaktdaten. LG Uli
@Spankabuttux
It seems English think they own every root in tradition, so it's venial sin to think so only about folk music tradition.
@truefolkemon Careful when talking about sin, we are all aware of your countrymen's tolerence of things that they themselves don't happen to believe in.
i could swear ed's violin is slightly out of tune. only very slightly, but you can tell at 1:49 it's a tiny bit flat!
