It wasn't Wally Wood's house...it was Bill Pearson's storage unit at his home in Mayer, Arizona. Bill was my mentor at the time as we were inking the Ocean Comics Popeye. So much was lost in the fire. A lot was saved, but much was lost.

Wood has one of my favorite nihilistic quotes about working in comics: "If I had it all to do over again, I'd cut off my hands."

I've heard more than a few artist friends say choosing art was the worst decision of their lives.

The crown jewel of my library, worth the chunk of change. The amount of detail and subtlety Wood put in the original art is incredible, so much was lost when reduced.
Oh and that cat made me nervous.
There's a cheap, ~$30, Best of EC Artisan Edition with a few Wally Wood stories.
If I have the story right, Woods was making around $200 a page at EC, he had a falling out with Gaines and ended up at Marvel where the page rate was $20. No wonder he killed himself.
I own a number of Artist's Editions, and the Wally Wood one is my favorite.
The cover from weird science fantasy 27 can be found on the Comic art fans website. The scan there shows the exhaust from the rocket to the left in red ink. The image in this book was scanned in grey scale. What a great cover, think it's my favorite Wood sci-fi cover.

Wally Wood had a deep and profound heart-sick, mournful desolate despair in his margins and a desperate hopeless silent aching in the air his figures appeared to breathe in on the page.
As the old saying goes: "there are no mistakes in Wood working until you run out of Wood."

46:27 flail, also idk if anyone has ever told you but the correct pronunciation of often is “ah•fin”…sorry I have issues but I’m making more comics thanks to you guys.
"My World" was actually written by Feldstein, despite the 'Wood' signature at the end. Feldstein talks about leaving it blank (maybe comics journal no 10?), but it was certainly his world, too. Oh, also "Perimeter" was towards the end of Wood's run for Kurtman's war books, and it shows.

Wally and so many other great artists like Toth are like wasted talent to me. So much great art wasted on some of the most constipated, boring stories and characters imaginable. But it paid the bills for them I suppose
