The data is very clear, undiagnosed or untreated adhd is associated with higher risk of drug abuse. I saw this with my sister who became addicted to meth. When I asked her if she could describe her thought process when deciding to use meth, she said she would use it when she became overwhelmed with life and tasks. She would take it to do things like laundry. It was so sad for me to hear.

The data I've seen indicates that prescription opioids have been decreasing for a few years before tranq/xylazine was available on the street in any significant quantities. My understanding is that the DEA is tracking xylazine (a non-opoid sedative) use as part of their monitoring of the opioid epidemic.

People are getting very pressed in the comments, but I think the point the speaker is trying to make is plenty clear: stimulants have become more available, stimulant overdoses have increased, and the DEA is strongly weighing whether to continue its current guidelines for the prescription of controlled substances. Now, I think it’s highly *likely* that the increase in prescriptions has played a role in the increase in overdoses, but that’s not easily proven. The speaker, however, does a good job at linking the two. A lot of the people in the comments (respectfully) sound like maybe they have a concerning dependence on their medications beyond just treating ADHD, but I could be reading too much into that
