Here's an update on the Martian suit! ruclips.net/video/WfHcNntVb3E/видео.html
Seriously Jealous about this.
The real question is how to make it work when pressurised.
+Scott Manley Hi lol
do you think it's the same spacesuit they used when they filmed on mars?
do you think it's the same spacesuit they used when they filmed on mars?
+Scott Manley My gosh i see you everywhere xD Dasvaldez, KSPTV i hear your name alot on both those channels xD
+Peter “Crackpot Pete” Carlson The mars-worn suits are kept by in nasa vaults to prevent contamination risks. The moon had those rock spiders, mars seens to have nanotech dust that can turn into cars.
thats the kind of product placement I am willing to accept. I even laughed :D
+akakalliba haha, I chuckled a bit too
if product sponsorship was like this more often, i wouldnt almost universally loathe marketing.
+Mephitus Tompouce watch the Truman Show then
agree, perfect product placement. loved the plug.
Now thats how you throw in advertisement, be honest :) Only problem is.. I think 99.99% of viewers here already are fans of that movie.
+Johannes Snutt I fan of Adam, I no see movie yet.
+nomakym Movie is awesome! The hype around this film was very well-deserved.
+Johannes Snutt I'll prob watch it in a few years. When a movie gets so much hype and attention, I generally avoid it until it blows over. Otherwise, I am usually greatly disappointed because I expect the greatest movie ever!!! to just see a good movie.
I miss the days of the video store, avoiding the new releases, and renting movies that I don't remember coming out and then finding good movies.
+Johannes Snutt Shhh. Fox doesn't have to know that
*****
Yeah generally I wait 2 years. Some movies I do just wait until DVD, like for Star Wars I wont be as patient.
There are only two words you ever need to describe Adam Savage: Unrestrained Enthusiasm
+SlightlyNotorious That's why he is awesome
+SlightlyNotorious Multi-orgasmic also comes to mind. 8-)
+SlightlyNotorious Complete Sell-out ;)
Tristan Davis-Keaveny Name one instance
+SlightlyNotorious it was a joke referencing the movie plug at the end, that is why i added the winking smile (as seen here ;) ) Adam is great and seems like a incredible genuine person.
That was actually my first RUclips comment, and now you have reaffirmed why i never made one before.
So glad I stayed around for the last few seconds.
I laughed.
The start of another 10 year project.
+Christopher Raff Willing to watch this series for the next decade!
+irwinisidro I was more than happy to watch him for over a decade on Mythbusters; another decade or two won't hurt a bit.
+Christopher Raff this! 1,000 times this! well said.
+Christopher Raff lol thats what i was thinking when the video had this little "subscribe to us to follow adam's building that suit project" annotation xD
Sponsorship done right, 100% honest and interesting content.
Forget the suit, I was checking out that crating job.
+krtwood lol
+krtwood Yes! 3.imimg.com/data3/XY/AO/MY-6144395/extruded-aluminium-profiles-500x500.jpg
+krtwood and did they have to hire overnight security to keep and eye on it.
+daymobrown That case (and the similar stuff seen on the film's set) was made by 80/20 Inc. in Columbia City, Indiana. I worked there for a while (and have a couple friends who still do), and it's great stuff to work with.
Haha, me too. I was thinking that those beams would be nice to make a 3D printer frame :D
That plug at the end when the disco kicked in, that shit was sooo funny man
What I love the most about this is Adam and his fascination with this.
+zamardii12 his enthusiasm can be infectious
+zamardii12 well, Adam is a enthusiastic person overall.
But that sponsor tho.
+Toastalicious Best sponsor msg I've ever seen tho ^^
If it makes Adam's dream come true, then I would more than gladly sit through even much longer sponsored messages. This one was about 3 seconds long, plus it was funny. I can't believe anyone would complain.
+Scattered Moon Shards That was so funny that even I am thinking about ordering the Bluray.
+CrashPilot1000 RUclips wouldn't let me post it, good thing I noticed it made me comment 3 times, good lord. Thank you for replying so quickly, now I've deleted the other two.
+Scattered Moon Shards I'm not complaining. I thought it was hilarious. :p
If there's anyone in the world who deserve to play with the suit - it's Adam Savage.
Can't wait to see the replica, and the process of making it.
Hey Adam: Thank you very much for sharing one of my videos on the "Tested"- Facebook profile!
No problem with plugging the movie. A lot of channels I follow do similar things. My only hope is that the suit replicating series of videos wont be for Tested Premium members only.
+John Ridley I do get the impression from sites/channels/forums like Tested and RPF that there is a lot of love for open source/public domain distribution both from creators and consumers. Obviously not everything can be for free, and I definitely agree that people should be rewarded for their time, effort and creativity. But still, it is gratifying to see that there is a good sense of community, cooperation and sharing out there.
Mike Phelps
> _My only hope is that the suit replicating series of videos wont be for Tested Premium members only._
Nothing is for premium members only, you just might have to wait for a decade.
+Mike Phelps It's actually a good way to incorporate advertising into videos. Adblock is making traditional advertising almost worthless. This form of plugging a sponsor is definitely the way to go. Linustechtips do it in all their videos and it's not much of a disturbance.
+Mike Phelps huge problem is with these youtubers making premium videos is i have like 30 different groups who have premium video i want to watch but i dont want to pay 90-150$ a month to see them all
Got the Blu-ray Day 1!!! beautiful movie, and beautiful suit! Can't wait to watch Adam and the gang exercise their magic and recreate this thing!
Build your replica suit, then put it next to the real prop. Bring in a bunch of guys from Fox and the movie, and see if they can tell which is which.
P.S. love how you transitioned to the promo spot hahaha
That's freaking brilliant!
+Calvin J. Bushay That definitely crossed my mind too, but if Fox gets pissy about him switching their suits, he could lose future access to props
+Calvin J. Bushay I think they would notice when it says "Savage" instead of "Whatney" on the helmet...
+12799MaDeuce Na Adam makes things with spares..... pop 2 replicas in a room and tell the the fox guys one is real and let them take it back with them....
I love Adams honesty in the end about how and why.
Adam's enthusiasm is higher vastly higher than a kid in a candy store! I love it
I can't wait to watch this building process!
I LOVE Adams "little boy" excitement! It is the BEST!
Wow .... just WOW the SPACESUIT !!!!
Tested is one of the very few venues where I don't mind one bit the plugging and endorsements. They've steered me to so much fantastic art in so many mediums. Adam, just keep plugging away. It does wonders for the community and gives us the opportunity to see stuff like this up close. Carry on, sir!
that plug was too funny xD
i love seeing adam geek out about stuff :D
I watched The Martian (3D) in VR this week and it was a treat. Obviously current HMDs don't have resolutions to truly appreciate the detail in these props, but it was more than sufficient to be an enjoyable viewing experience. I can't wait to see this project as it develops. Kudos to Tested for all of their coverage of The Martian. Love it!
So glad to see this video. Thanks.
this is why we love this channel!!
That sponsor plug was exceptional.
Perfectly justified promotion. Can't wait to see the rest of the project!
Best DVD ad ever!
I love how they worked in the ad. Delightful.
ill go buy the dvd now...
Holy cow, this is going to be my most anticipated build on Tested to date! Can't wait for the build guys!
This is an excellent example of sponsored content. And it will probably work too! I just finished reading the book last week, and I will be watching the movie as soon as I can.
Adam, your enthusiasm is contagious! Please keep us updated on your progress with this project.
Adam's nerdgasm made my day
LOL! I love watching Adam nerding out.
That last part LMAO¡!!!
This is the kind of sponsored content I can get behind. Awesome of Fox to let you borrow it.
1:35 Flashback to when Adam lost his virginity...
since watching tested, Adam Savage has brought back my passion for crafts. I have been working on my own Sci-fi blaster for 3 weeks now. about 4+ hours every day has been spend on it. hand shaping, the peices to fit together. Sinice i lack CNC, or 3d printing, i am using files, and hand tools to craft everything.
Has Adam ever thought of making the water suit from the original movie dune? It's sort f a space suit.
This is why Adam Savage is one of my favorite people in the world. His enthusiasm for movies is just amazing.
Now that's how you do a sponsored video.
I got the book, and read it over a weekend, due to Adam's recommendation on the podcast. I fell in love with it. I went to see the movie, and was one of the only people in the theater that had read the book. I talk up the book to anyone who will listen. I pre-ordered the Bluray as soon as it was available, and have watched the movie 3 times since getting it. I am so jealous that you get to see and feel the space suit from the movie!! I can not wait to see the journey of your creating one for yourself!! Thank you so much for everything you do!!!
So this may be a dumb question; but why doesn't Adam contact the producers of the costume and get some direct access to the systems/molds they used to produce the suit? 2:13
I understand the issue with some props like the 2001 suit where the company/people that made them may no longer be around. If the companies and people still exist, Adam's famous enough he should be able to just call them up and ask to have a sit down and pick their brains (mmmm... brains). I'd love to get some insight into how a professional prop maker goes about building one of these from scratch without any more references than the designer's sketches.
+Scott Cress probably because Adam loves the art of reverse-engineering.
+Scott Cress there's a good chance the studio that hired the company to make the suit have a contract that stops them from doing that... copyright and all that crap
+Scott Cress
Good question, but it will be harder to get than the suit itself. The suit costs nothing and is promotional goodwill, where the makers would be seeding the competition.
+Rhys Howard Pretty much this. I believe that when you do prop making for movies, even though you may have all the original moulds and can cast new pieces, you are under contract to not make any more duplicates.
+Skittles .McSkuttles Rick Baker seemed to have kept a lot of stuff and his recent auction didn't bother with any (TM) or (C) for the films involved, even MIB and Gremlins.
Props are strange things.
Any number of them are still out there in the wild, especially the bulky and difficult to store items. There's a good chunk of the original Star Wars set still out in the desert. The Galileo, The Death Star, the Alien ship, even the space station from 2001 had in the past ended up in a strange quasi-abandonment and rediscovery.
I have to say i applaud adams kid like enthusiasm, its great to see someone who's "job" is what he loves so much! Excellent and keep up the good work guys. I saw the martian suit at CES, its impressive
I'm going to buy the blue ray as soon as i finish this doobie.
Use a pipe. Doesn't waste as much.
+Gordo Simmins *Bong
Sorry ladies, call me old school. I like glass pipes too, but this occasion it was a nice fat doobie.
+minitzonthesun lol to each their own. As long as it gets you high. Take it easy, man :)
joey walsworth HAHAH True words my man. You too brother.
Adam's excitement is so adorable and contagious.
Did anyone from the film company came to monitor them or something?
+boy638 Adam is a well known in the prop business, im sure they trust him.
+Liam Flannery even with his reputation for blowing stuff up? lol
Liam Flannery Do they trust him to give back the original instead of the perfect replica he will create?
+boy638 at the end of the day, it's just a prop, I don't think they care that much tbh.
+Chris Everly Oh they care. They care a lot. That suit undoubtedly represents thousands upon thousands of dollars in materials and man hours. It's clear from how it was crated up that it was treated with some deference.
Don't care if it's sponsored. Adam's enthusiasm is infectious! Can't wait to watch all videos!
Is it Johansen's suit?
+Marcus Mosimann You're probably referring to the crewbadge that said Johanssen at the bottom. But it has the names of the whole crew on it.
says watney on the back of the helmet
+Marcus Mosimann 4:45 the helmet says "Watney."
+Joel Werner Well according to book lore it could be a combination of either. I'm not sure whether that was followed through in the movie.
+Joel Werner Oh! You're right!
Best commercial plug ever. Can't wait to see your version!
If each video of the series is 3 minutes long i am going to cry. please don't leave out the details of the build. WE LOVE THEM!.
Adam, the material part of the suit is actually Aeroprene despite people thinking it's neoprene- this was addressed in the extras of the copy I bought off iTunes the other day. I hope your replica goes well, can't wait to see it finished!
This is the first time I have ever just stood up and clapped at a sponsored advertisement. It's delightful knowing that this advertisement is gonna lead to a lot more wonderful videos directly related to this throughout the rest of the year.
It's not like Adam needed to be asked to advertise this, anyway.
Adams's close up inspection, feeling the fabric while talking about it's intricate details....actually triggered my ASMR :D
I love to see Adam geek out over props, his excitement is infectious.
Still waiting to find the thing in my life that I can get even half as excited as Adam with his making.
RuzzyShuya mine is the dji manic pro!!
i love it when Adam 'geeks out' .. cause its not acting at all and you can tell how genuine it is
It is the thing that I find incredible about movies, all the set designers, prop makers, costume designers etc. are all highly skilled artists in their own right, that suit is a work of art. Its no different that examining an oil painting or sculpture except that our preservation of these works of art in movies has been largely terrible, I have a feeling future generations will be shocked by the lack of preservation and care of motion picture artworks.
The way they used retro music in 'The Martian' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films (not to mention the 'Fallout' series of video games) was just awesome.
No joke. I missed this movie in theatres and figured "meh I'll wait for netflix" But I'll buy a copy. For Adam. Yes Fox I mean that, I'm gonna buy a bluray because the Savage told me to.
Now let him play with more of your stuff please so we can all live vicariously through him and experience those joys through his skillful nerdy hands, his keen geeky eyes, and hang on his every eccentric and versed word.
Adam Savage made me do it.
Adam fondling the suit becomes 300% more hilarious if you imagine Matt Damon is still inside it...
Seriously though, Adam's enthusiasm is infectious and a joy to watch. Look forward to seeing the recreation!
"here's why" *cue exciting music* "Get The Martian" had me cracking up!! LOL
I can only imagine someone that put in work on this suit watching this just smiling ear to ear with all this genuine praise
I love how excited Adam gets!!
God I love when Adam is excited... You can't help but to smile
That plug at the end made me lol so much
adam savage is such a savage man!
Interesting to see details that were screenprinted to the suit, I hadn't even though of that for this one. I was wondering about the circuitry patterns! Nice. Always learning.
don't forget to document all the process including how you begin to take that suit apart and assess the parts. it will be interesting to watch all the episodes. please also show how Adam and crew apply his philosophy.
Getting access to that Martian Surface Suit Adam is wide eyed and drooling, worth the commercial even though I already had purchased the DVD.
I really want to buy that movie thanks Adam
When Adam burst into an ad mode out of no where, that was funny as hell :D :D
Adams reaction is The best!
I bought the movie last weekend, and have already watched it three times. Such a good movie.
I could watch Adam Savage all day! Can't freakin' WAIT to follow this build!
That attention to detail in the smallest places of the suit is beautiful
getting to inspect that suit fully hands on for just a line of advertisement is just hilarious, also well done for getting that easy of a deal
You display of Joy and Glee is genuine and infectious
OH my, that looks amazing. I can't wait to see Adam replicating this! Also, best ad read/placement ever.
This is the first sponsorship that actually made me burst out laughing when it came up. First that glass promo and now this, Adam proves that selling out can still make for excellent content.
And this is why I like watching stuff with Adam in it, he is just so enthusiastic about everything, I love it... :D
That's incredible! Can't wait to see your process. A one day build of a piece or two would be awesome to see! Even if it's just a paint job or... Well.. Anything really. I'm very eager to see what comes next!
Always love to see Adam's excitement for his passions. According to the Blu-ray documentary for the film, the fabric is "Airprene", which as far as I can tell is neoprene with holes in it lol.
The final bit cracked me up "here's why..." xD hahaha!
I never payed any attention to movie props untill I started watching how enthusiastic Adam was with them.
Like a kid in a candy shop, So nice to see someone with so much passion for something.
so rad. I'm coming to visit extra time you kids are here in L.A. ;)
I was almost expecting Adam to sniff it and say "Awwwwwwwww, it even smells like matt damon" lol.
What an honour... for a movie prop to be touched by Adam. It must be worth twice as much now.
Adam reminds me of most children on Christmas morning. They just can't wait to open up their presents.
Enjoy the suit Adam! Saw the movie in 3D, again with my kids then bought the Blu-ray. I'm a huge fan. I'm jealous.
Great video as always Tested! I love it when the music comes on when Adam is advertising the movie at the end.
I went to the theatre and saw this movie. Wasn't planning on buying it on blu ray but now I will. Why cause Adam Savage told me to. He is the man!!! Love these guys.
This is probably the best commercial of anything I've ever seen.
Much like many of the other Tested viewers, I read the Martian at your recommendation. I can't tell you how excited I was to find out The Martian was being made into a movie, after I had finished reading the book. I now equally excited to see this new suit come together.
I hope this will become a huge "one day build" style series, that's obviously more than one day.
I have just started watching a marathon of an old series. "Space 1999" The first time I see the Moon Alpha Space suit I thought of you. This should be a new project for you for a new space suit for your collection.
