love this :) i always get happy when producers aren’t afraid to showcase how close hamlet and horatio really were. they were absolute best friends and it makes me a little sad when we don’t see that often in other productions of hamlet
Tennant sold this performance for me. His acting capacities portrayed Hamlet as he was written: a man in mourning pretending to be insane. Most actors who portray Hamlet do so with far too much solemnity. Tennant puts the humanity and insanity back into the character!
Leaving aside the acting, and it's very, very good, I've always been struck by the absolute genius of the writing here. Shakespeare isn't on that pedestal for nothing...
My favourite part! Love this so much! :) 'VERY LIKE A WHALE!!' XD It's just funny when Hamlet says 'I do beseech you!'. When I first saw this on TV I was in fits of giggles and then he attacked Guildenstern and I jumped so badly...
@@cinematicadventures1 I was joking as well. I think David Tennant is an excellent Hamlet here, the best I have seen for sure - but Shakespeare did give him some really good lines 😊
David Tennants inflections and performance is absolutely amazing! I am understanding why some say Shakespeare’s work was meant to be performed and not read.
What i love most about Hamlet is that when he's being crazy, the actor portraying him can play it however he wants. This was my intro to Shakespeare and i will never not love Tennants amazing performance
It's one of my favourite scenes in the whole play. Leaving aside this particular performance, it's just an amazing piece of writing - the whole play is really. As for this performance, it really is excellent, the best Hamlet I have seen.
@darkraven6966 It IS the Doctor... he merely takes on the persona of David Tennant so we don't know (I shouldn't be telling you this) ... he Loooves Shakespeare. Before he met Donna the second time, he went forward in time to play Shakespeare's Hamlet.... ;)
What a brilliant scene! Thank you so much for posting (from the US). You don't happen to have the rest of the show do you? I have been dying to see it.
It was cut - Hamlet is so long that your chances of seeing the full text (i.e. the one in the First Folio) performed in a theatre are practically zero.
I think the scene could have been stronger if Rosencrantz & Guildernstern & Polonius were allowed to be strong - instead of just making them stooges for Hamlet's jokes, that he can do & say anything he wants. It becomes tiresome.
While I don't disagree that the comedy in this part isn't very funny, this scene does follow the text. I was checking the text as they went along cause I read your comment and thought "that's not the way I remember it" but it's the full Shakespeare.
Shakespeare didn't write Rosencrantz & Guildenstern as strong characters - they are ineffectual and pretty much their sole function, outside of the plot, is to be the butt of Hamlet's jokes. You can't blame the director or actors for this, it's Shakespeare's fault.
David Tennant ladies I am so confused I've heard the song Counting Stars but I'm more like counting confusion you have me confused what are Dell what are you saying you are not making any sense not even if you were playing Darkwing Duck would you be making any sense why I do not understand Shakespeare
Usually when David acts scary, to me his adorableness gets in the way. This was not 1 of those times.
"And there is much music, excellent voice in this little organ!"
He almost made me forget that it's just a recorder.

I think we should be sceptical of the 'mourning' part. Above all he wants to be king.
@@willjames1712 I always thought Hamlet wanted revenge for his fathers death.
@@willjames1712 That sounds more like Macbeth. He's definitely mourning his fathers death and aiming to revenge him.

David Tennant is the most adorable Hamlet ever! Never has Hamlet made me laugh so much.
Ooooooh!
He plays Three Blind Mice as the hey leave!
Wow, this Hamlet actually looks crazy. I don't see that often.
David Tennants inflections and performance is absolutely amazing! I am understanding why some say Shakespeare’s work was meant to be performed and not read.
When Hamlet got angry David Tennant's Scottish accent showed. Great piece though.

David Tennant is absolutely brilliant! I can't wait for PBS to broadcast this in America!!!!
"I don't well understand that." love that line
Can we approve how Horatio is the only one to give this small bow to Hamlet at the end?
That’s because Horatio is an amazing loyal friend to hamlet! Honestly my favorite hamlet character.
Cumberbatch's act is worth watching too
The best version of Hamlet I’ve ever seen
Ok but the last 4 notes from the recorder made me laugh
"You're welcome" ROTFLMAO !!
3:33 I LOVE THIS
i almost forgot to watch this today

"I cannot make you a wholesome answer, my wit's diseased!" My favourite line in the whole show XD
This proves it... Bow ties are cool.
Wrong doctor m8
it's like watching the doctor performing in some parts!!XD

I love how there are multitudes of different interpretations of this scene
*snerk* That little bit of hair that hung down, out over the crown -- it had me giggling as he faced off with the others.
AH i love this version! thanks for posting it up :)
I've never known a sexier madman

I wish I could have seen this!
Try reading no fear shakespeare with this and it's pretty interesting.
did anyone else feel as though they were watching doctor who instead of hamlet with this vid?
Not really - there was a Doctor Who who played the recorder, but you would need to be as old as I am to remember that 😁
I think it’s cause he wore this same outfit in doctor who also the way he plays crazy is apparently how he also plays 10s alienness lol
He’s giving a lot of Russel Brand vibes in this 😂
Dirty Brian and Alec Hardy
What happened to "Your wisdom should show itself more richer to signify this to the doctor..."?

@KatrynMerteuil It's schedualed to be shown at the end of April
Advert for Grammarly at the beginning. How far we've fallen.
