- Maggie Grout has just printed her first school in Madagascar - only the second 3D-printed school in the world.
She started the NGO, Thinking Huts, as a teenager, with the aim of 3D-printing schools in countries where some children lack the opportunity to get an education.
Printing schools is fast, once the printer is set up, and saves on building materials.
Maggie says she is motivated to help underprivileged children partly because she was born in poverty in China, before being adopted by American parents.

For 300k$ in Subsahara you can afford to build a massive conventional structure instead of a small 3d printed shed.

The more people who start to use 3d printing the more the cost will become competitive. this is only the 2nd school in the world built like this (stated in the video). Also if you think spending more money to create more ecological friendly buildings is a bad idea then we have little hope for the future of this planet.
@@toastgv9140 Being ecologically friendly is not a priority for poor people the way it is for you. Especially if its at the cost of significantly reducing what you can do with money which there's very little of to begin with. Go ramp up production and experiment in your rich countries then come back once it's cheaper than the cheapest options currently available on the market.

With human population constantly rising advancements in technology are needed to able to sustain such. You have a very short sighted view on this topic in my opinion. No one will need housing after the planet is destroyed from human-caused natural disasters due to climate change. Production would never be able to be "ramped up" anywhere except where the housing is needed. Being ecological friendly is everyone's problem and responsibility not just rich countries.

In Madagascar most buildings are made from sun dried clay bricks. How can this building have a lower carbon footprint than clay?
A friend of mine built 3 schools multiple times larger than this for about $10,000 each.

Antananarivo‘s population is about 1.5 million and they don’t even have a functioning sewage system.
This seems unnecessary since there's cheap labor cost and high unemployment in Africa.
This is not a new idea. I've seen it around for some time but $300,000?? Why is that so expensive? This would be easy to do with the cheap local cost of labour so I'm not sure if this is that effective relative to brick and concrete with cheap labour. Is it really necessary? It also seems more wasteful since seems to be solid concrete and may not withstand compression and torsional forces which non printed structures with vertical and horizontal planes of support have. I don't think the difficulty of making schools is the building of the school. Many parent volunteers, in such regions even have the skill set to do this for free for their kids.

This is interesting in terms of architecture. BUT often times the main problem is not about buildings and facilities. It's about NOT having enough money to pay for the teachers.
Unfortunately, people who are not into education don't know that. They think it's a lack of classroom, school, materials, etc. But the most important think you have to have, where education is concerned, is a well trained educator. With a well trained teacher, teaching could be done in huts, using chalk, and basic pencil and paper. That's how 99% of all the most learned mathematicians in the long history of mankind have become educated in mathematics & other such deep subjects.
On the other hand, I've seen plenty of incredibly expensive, well built schools, and there's little teaching or learning going on.
(This little hut cost $300,000. Unless the program rapidly scale up its school building project, this will be nothing but a dead albatross: because this 3-D printing "school building" project really is more of a gimmick, about the promises of technology... this is NOT how you use funds optimally. In reality, in a third world country like this, $300,000 could build you 10 much bigger ACTUAL, FUNCTIONAL SCHOOLS... with plenty of money left over for basic supplies for 100 students for a year or more... Again, it's the (lacking of) QUALITY OF TEACHERS that is of a more pressing issue.... not in how you build tiny hut-like one-two classroom school structure that costs close to half a million dollars in the middle of poor, third world countries...)

Carbon reduction? She mentions carbon reductions, but I’d love to know what she is comparing it to. The structure seems to be printed in cement, one of the highest carbon intensive material in the world. Like others in the comments, I also wonder if the money spent could have been better used on a structure built with a different construction approach. I’m happy for the students and teachers that will have a new classroom.
GOOD POINT but the situation in Madagascar you cant really bring pollution in the game but if she is saying its not bad for the environment she might got a point I mean have you seen the vehicles and machines to actually make something like that and the amount of labor its self required to make it and the cement its self is used by every country. Don't expect it to be made out of wood.

I applaud the girl for being ambitious and wanting to help. We need people like her on this planet but in that part of the world spending $300,000 on a small room is a massive waste of money. I'm positive if bricks were used you could have had a much, much bigger School. You could have employed 15- 20 local builders. This would have facilitated new training and building skills so these people could supply for themselves in the future. Sadly once this little room is built they will pack up and leave. The people of that town won't know anymore than they did before the crew and that industrial 3D printer got there. It just seems like a missed opportunity. and a waste of resources. You know, you can give a Hungry Man a fish or you can hand him a net and teach him to fish and he'll never be hungry again.

one of Madagascar biggest industrys is brick making (well infact nearly 90% of the population make brick's as a source of income) and a finished brick is sold for about 5 cents or less?

It' s great start and admirable for having such grand intentions. Up to us to make it work in various parts of the world. It worked, let us celebrate it. Naysayers are plentiful and do not help.

This really is a waste of resources and done in the wrong location - it might work in some parts of the US for fast relief shelters etc.
In this situation, I agree that using local resources and labour, and 'brick and mortar' approach would me much more beneficial as discussed in other comments.

I don't think the problem is a lack of buildings, but rather teachers and the rest of the system

Unfortunately, while forward thinking in the 3d printing space is commendable - charity projects that employ local trade workers and materials would be much more beneficial to African communities, 300’000 could’ve been better spent and while the price of 3d printing will reduce, it still seems a steep affair. Plus as others have pointed out, pure cement would have a higher footprint than traditional brick and mortar.

I think the important thing to take away from this is the technology, and its potential, rather than the cost. This is a new technology, and new technology gets cheaper over time, just like solar panels have gotten cheaper. In the future, this may be a viable method for building affordable housing once people perfect the process and drive the costs down to affordability.

I think it takes someone to have gone to school, to realize that other people could benefits from it. So natives without schools would probably have never feel the need to build a school. Thus i believe natives don’t need such technology to build schools, what they need is teachers and n education policy.

This makes zero sense. $300K, plus the fact that they had to ship the machine, which got damaged and took 3 WEEKS to fix. I don't see how this is efficient, cost effective, or better for the environment in any way. They could have instead, while building a school out of clay (an actually feasible way for people there to take their own initiative and build something), trained some young people how to build something, thus giving them a chance at continuing to work in the future. No one can do this without that machine, so even if they did learn something about using it, (which I doubt that anyone from the village did) it does them little to no good. Make it make sense!

Rule of 3D Printed hype:
Whatever noun follows "3D Printed" is *always* the wrong word.
Typically they will claim that one or more 3D printed parts somehow constitute the entirety of the 'next higher assembly'. In this example, some walls and posts in themselves do not equal a "school". Schools cannot be printed.
Once you know this, you'll see it everywhere.

- 3D-printing buildings isn't new, I've seen this happening for a few years now. I wonder if she's just doing stuff others are also doing or if those were connected to Maggie but she was just not mentioned. 🤔 I suspect the answer is that there's a company that 3D-prints buildings that multiple people and groups have been using, one of which is her. That is, 3D-printing buildings isn't a new idea, nor is it hers, what is her idea is using this concept to build schools in Madagascar. (I'd say to do it in Syria too so that that blind boy won't have to teach his classmates in a bombed-out pile of rubble, but there'd be no point to re-building until _after_ Bashir al-Asshat is gone.)

And because of their disbelief and of their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny;

And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger - they slew him not nor crucified him, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain.

Lo! those who disbelieve and deal in wrong, Allah will never forgive them, neither will He guide them unto a road,

Except the road of hell, wherein they will abide for ever. And that is ever easy for Allah.
[4:170]
O mankind! The messenger hath come unto you with the Truth from your Lord. Therefor believe; (it is) better for you. But if ye disbelieve, still, lo! unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. Allah is ever Knower, Wise.
[4:171]
O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. The Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" - Cease! (it is) better for you! - Allah is only One God. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.

The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angels. Whoso scorneth His service and is proud, all such will He assemble unto Him;

As for those who disbelieve, their deeds are as a mirage in a desert. The thirsty one supposeth it to be water till he cometh unto it and findeth it naught, and findeth, in the place thereof, Allah Who payeth him his due; and Allah is swift at reckoning.
