Idiots always stop under a bridge, and then the traffic behind them is forced to stop too so you have a huge line of cars just waiting to be hit by the tornado.
Just curious why is it not safe to go under a bridge and walk up high underneath it where those little crevices are and ball up or hange onto something concrete in ground? I would think it would protect you from flying objects and if you get up in there tightly msybe it would not suck you out?
@@hollyjones8775 The underside of an overpass is both an elevated surface and a wind channel since it lacks walls. It actually can intensify the wind from the storm and push or pull you out, and hit you with debris at a higher speed than being flat down in a ditch. You are very exposed, basically.
@@hollyjones8775 Because not all bridges / overpasses have those. Most are just slopes with no protection, and it creates a wind tunnel effect so you'll likely get sucked out.
0:32 You should never do this, taking shelter under a bridge or an overpass can be deadly. They turn into wind tunnels in a tornado, only amplifying the wind speeds, you should take shelter in the lowest ground you can find, like in a ditch on the side of the road.
Even if you’re a ways off from the tornado? I’m thinking she pulled over because of heavy rain and then happened to see the tornado pass by. I personally would feel safer staying in my car vs getting into a ditch where I have no covering and nothing to hold onto. Plus, if you have babies/toddlers with you, it’s hard to hold on to everyone in a ditch. I know it’s the “safest” thing to do, but staying in a car just *seems* safer. 🤷🏾♀️
@@AmyThrash Cars can get flipped in even weak tornadoes, and be flung through the air by more powerful ones, even if it "seems" safe to stay in a car it's really not. You'd have to have a straight up armored car for it to be safer than other options. If you aren't in a place to take proper shelter it's bad either way, don't get me wrong, but it's better than nothing.
I've stated this many times on the "overpass vs ditch" debate. so heck, let's just add "staying in the car" as a third option, as it doesn't change the result... All of those "options" SUCK. 🌪 If you truly want to be SAFE, don't be out and about during severe weather if you can possibly avoid it. Barring a mobile/manufactured home, you are always safer in a building than a vehicle. If you're leaving work to head home, check the weather before you take off. If it looks like trouble, stay put or head to an appropriate building until it passes.
There obviously needs to be more education not to "take cover" under Bridges/Overpasses, since they funnel the winds, and therefore increase the wind speed under them. Layman's example : A hair dryer with a duck bill on the end is much more forceful than the same hair dryer with the end nozzle removed.
Never take shelter from a tornado under a bridge! Underpasses are a good place to lessen vehicle damage in the event of a hailstorm. However, underpasses are death traps in a tornado! The underpass squeezes the wind in a tornado, and essentially turns that area into a wind tunnel that quickly accelerates the wind. Many people have died by taking shelter from a tornado under a bridge!
Any time an incident like this happens, you always get know-it-alls who say "HERPA DERPA NEVER GET UNDER AN OVERPASS, MUH 200 MPH WINDS!" Not only are tornadoes powerful enough for you to worry about the "wind tunnel effect" very rare, but you would have to be struck directly by it, too. The more common hazards are large hail and falling debris, both of which an overpass can protect you from.
I heard "overpass" and thought "uh oh". Very bad idea to do this. The reason people think this is safe is due to an infamous video shot in 1991 of a family taking shelter under an overpass except - The overpass had a unusual design for the Midwest in there were exposed girders and crawlspaces to hide in - The tornado veered far to one side before it hit the overpass so they did not take a direct hit - The tornado itself was rather low on the F/wind speed scale. Science then, EMTs were greeted with decap1tated b0dies and other such horrors when they encountered people who were crushed/shredded from debris when they sought shelter under an overpass. An overpass also acts as a funnel, increasing windspeed and acting as a collection point for debris.
Choosing to park under the bridge prevented the people from behind them from having a choice to make. Those of you who excuse bad behavior after the fact never give stuff like that consideration.
The Midwest is vast and it cost prohibitive to have roadside tornado shelters in easy reach beside every major highway and freeway. That, and they would be havens for criminal activity. You can try to get the casualty figures as low as humanly possible, but there is no way to make the world entirely safe or even close to it. Most of this responsibility falls on individuals to know the proper things to do in the event of a tornado to increase their odds of survival.
Here’s a short time lapse of the tornado as it crossed Hwy 31 in Columbia. I positioned myself a few miles south of the track to be safe: ruclips.net/video/fAkRu0vYWucs/видео.htmli=KwY_Z6pMyc2Hty9P
Since this state, among others, has tornadoes every year.....PLEASE!!!!!! do a public service Educational blurb about WHY you don't take cover under a bridge, overpass in your car and especially out of your car!!! 2 days ago, storm spotters for a nat weather channel and who can call to the nat.weather service almost missed reporting and helping with the Barnstall search and rescue as they were stuck behind people holding up an entire interstate by sitting parked under an overpass. What if EMS needed through. They would get there to help the people who were hurt or sucked out because they chose to sit under an overpass.
I know everyone else is gonna say it but I will too. Parking under a bridge is not where you should be. It's the worst place you can be. Wind has to move faster to pass under the bridge

Yeah right. We know exactly why you did this interview. That dashcam probably didn't even belong to IT. Your corporation probably just told it to pretend like the video belonged to it.
Would you be surprised if the media did not jump at the opportunity to find this person even if the car in front of them offered and was just a regular Joe?

Sadly the ones who need to hear it will ignore it while in a panic. I don’t fault them but will always spread the message to avoid it.
