No wonder this poor railroad is in Little to no better condition than it was in the days of the Milwaukee Road! Absolutely laid on straight dirt foundation. I guess that gravel is just for decoration. No wonder the track shifts and sinks, especially susceptible to frost heave and then sinks in wet soil during spring.
Did they come back here and put in some ballast? or is that just too much finishing makeup for a good enough for now? Seems like they could put a cap with a flange? on the far end the tie being pulled out to widen/deepen/smooth the cut. and a cap on leading edge on the push in.
Well, by golly, they do know how to repace ties!, wonder how long it would take them to do the whole railroad?? (I know this was 7 years ago, but time marches on!!)

You might owe these guys an apology. They are actually spending money on track repair. Setting new ties in the finest mud base. Give them a little credit.
@ 0:49 why did they pull that tie out? It was not completely disintegrated yet. How else will we continue to see box cars sway like a pendulum if they keep replacing ties like this? 😁

we replaced the whole track on our museumsrailroad siehe www.selfkantbahn.de and chosse the UNION JACK and then you have it in English ! And ballasted new of course..Then the ballast was tempered. But our ties were srewed, not spiked.Spke become loose ...

Hopefully after you took this video they came back with ballast and tamped those ties up. Thank you for sharing!
And no.. Then derailed too this year on video.
I remember Escanaba as quite a party back in the 70s when I was a young man

Eggzactly! Where's the ballast?
Easily Low & Sinking

Nope
I remember when the ELS was a ore hauler.
Man your old…. LMAO!

Danke für das Video, Daumen hoch.
Frage:
Höre ich da einen luftgekühlten Deutz Motor der die Maschine antreibt ?

LMFAO
Nice to see them doing some maintenance to keep the line up to snuff. I wonder if it's due to the engines that derailed?
@ 0:49 why did they pull that tie out? It was not completely disintegrated yet. How else will we continue to see box cars sway like a pendulum if they keep replacing ties like this? 😁
That's going to be a long day...!
Good thing they have plenty of soil to work with. It’s great for gardening and railroading. That stuff holds track level better than ballast.
Garden railroading!
I been workin on the railroad!
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 6 Mar 22.
They need more than just a few ties replaced. They need their whole sorry ass roadbed redone and modernized.
I never knew garden soil was a suitable replacement for ballast. 😂🤣👍
Yeah, the whole roadbed is just dirt. Wow.
They need their whole butt hurt sorry asses, just plain given up for dead!
amazing, now you know why it is mostly buckled.
What do these guys do during the long winters?
Clear the switches of snow and shovel it mostly.
Feel really cold when they’re working.
Smoke pot
No ballast!!! WTF???? Everytime it rains the dirt will just turn to mud and you have new ties in muck!!
Remember, this is the EL&S. Paying back it’s karma due, for blaming railfans all these years.
Looks like they could use a few car loads of ballast in that area.
How long the wooden tie will last ?
A lot longer if they would use stones for ballast instead of dirt that will rot the ties because of poor drainage.
Is this already done
One or two.. ha ha
Well I think is been fixed !

Is this the area where log cars rock and roll?
Actually yes it was.. Not that it helped when you don't use more ballast.
Is the place where the engine derailed?
Near it.
The EL&S, is where locomotives go to rot & die!
As many times you film do they ever acknowledge you😂?
Yeah.. Some still don't, but it isn't them I'm there to film so..
Who cares, ‘the else’, is stupid!
They need to put down new ballast and stronger rails too!
Nahhhh, they got nothing heavy to run…..part time garden railroad / full time graveyard!
This was like putting lipstick on a pig 4 years ago...The whole railroad needs an up grade !!
I'm surprised they even make enough money to have a machine like that unless it was given to em lol.
You know why they put sponge rubber on the shovel handles? So that when you fall asleep it doesn't hurt your chin.
Barrowed from the North Shore Scenic RR……who make more$$$
Too bad after even working on this the ELS still has crap track...
If your ties are set in dirt instead of ballast, you're gonna have crappy track. Whole thing just turns to mud when it rains.
Shame on the mess!
Dirt for ballast ?
Cheaper?
Don’t forget tree roots and grass roots. It makes a stronger sub surface.
Good drainage, in europe we aim for this evan if the track is little used. In the end it saves the cost of rerailing

Don’t forget the earth worms and dog poop, as well…..
Well no wonder their ties are rotten! They're sitting in dirt! Supposed to be ballast so the water can drain out!
Needs a LOT more maintenance.

What a waste of time and wood, its the rail that's needs the adjustment.
