@@nenblom Cut and cover, my friend. Mostly cut and cover technique. You would have been able to see the men working right through an open gape in from street level. They made sure traffic above wasn't hindered though. Amazing.
The video began at the southbound local platform of the Brooklyn Bridge station, and showed the train negotiating the long-abandoned City Hall loop before beginning its northbound run. I never rode that part of the line, and appreciate seeing it here. Many thanks.
This is a very well made video with a crisp clear quality view. Good job! It's been years since I've been in my old Bronx and I can see how much this line has changed. Stations look updated, metal gangways next to each track, and of course the new "techno-trains". I miss the Red Birds, but I'm glad that things appear to be much cleaner.
The "layup" tracks to the south of Brooklyn Bridge were once used to connect the IRT Lexington local to the downtown IRT stations of Fulton Street, Wall Street and Bowling Green. The local would then terminate at the inner station at South Ferry. The connection at Brooklyn Bridge was severed in the 1960's because the curve connecting the local tracks to the express tracks at Fulton Street was too sharp for newer trains to negotiate safely without traveling very slowly. This caused bottlenecks on the line so the connection was cut. The remaining tracks are layup tracks today.
I’m sure the original designers of the IRT system in 1900 never dreamed that their work would not only still be in daily use 120 years later but would still be a vital part of the system.
Sweet memories. I don't know it it still available but back in the day a lot of people would get off at Pelham Bay Park, go downstairs and transfer on to an MTA bus (usually a GMC Fishbowl) and ride over to Orchard Beach to spend enjoying the sun and surf. Simple enjoyments from the past.

The signal facing the other way can be found around the system. These are installed just in case the train has to run the opposite direction. These are mainly used when trains have to run Peak direction on the express (middle) tracks. AM to the City, PM from the City.

Sorry for hijacking! What an incredible system! Your system is much older then the CTA in Chicago, but there appears to have been much work to update and/or repair things!
Robbi496 Parts of the L predate the NY Subway. In the 80s the MTA, along with the city decided that updating and repairs were needed across the board. Bridges were shut down and repaired. That program still continues today as part of a 30 year program. Chicago is going through the same thing. Many station are being rebuilt too.

Many of the major lines in New York have four tracks for Local and Express service. Others have three tracks for rush hour Express service, like the 7 Flushing line. No the BMT and IRT are not compatible. A Division Trains (IRT, Numbered Services, ie. 1,2,3 etc, are shorter and narrower than B Division Trains ( BMT & IND, Lettered Services, ie. A,B,C etc. You'll notice that an A Division Train has 3 sets of doors compared to 4 sets on a B Division Train. An A Division Train can fit in a B Division platform but there would be a big gap, while a B Division Train can not fit in an A Division platform. The IRT did not want anyone else using their tracks, so they created a different car than the BRT as it was known at that time. This is also the reason you never see A Division and B Division Trains on the same platform level. The only exception is at Queesboro Plaza.
@@justathought5984 The IRT cars have the same dimension as the Manhattan elevated cars. Remember the IRT bought the Els even before the subway opened, which explains how they were able to co-ordinate the two systems, as elevated routes were extended over the mostly elevated subway lines in The Bronx. The Brooklyn el cars were also the same dimensions -- about 50 feet long and 8' 9" wide. Thus the BMT Q cars were able to be used on the Flushing and Astoria lines alongside the IRT cars, both wooden cars from Second Avenue and the steel cars from Times Square. Later on, the BMT Q-cars went to the Third Avenue el for Express service in the Forties and Fifties, then sent back to Brooklyn to end their days on the Myrtle Avenue el. When the BRT designed its own subway cars around 1910, they based them on the Boston steel cars that were a full ten feet wide and 67 feet long. Because the BMT ran el cars on many routes also using the Standard steel cars and Triplexes, the older wood cars that shared those lines, like the C-types and the Q-cars, were equipped with a steel projection at the doors that helped close the wide gap at the platforms.
in all honesty, im sure you have spotted someone that is not supposed to be there on the tracks before. Do you report them? Or at least, how often do you spot anyone?
