There's always two sides to everything and Joyner mastered it. I feel like when he writes these types of songs he's really having his own therapy and empathy/understanding session with himself. As I've gotten older i've practiced putting myself in their shoes and having the debate in my head even if I totally don't agree with their perspective. It's a good practice to gain empathy for others.

The disease argument will go around and around forever. What gets me is why do we let something like a title always be the main focus? At the end of the day someone’s fucking struggling and that persons struggle affects way more than just them. I am an addict in recovery surrounded by a family of other addicts - some in recovery some out & some lost the chance to make another attempt. We all need to know that we can’t save anyone if we aren’t putting ourselves first.
“I gotta do what’s best for me”.
Thats not selfish; it’s survival. Regardless of how people get into messes we all make them but to create the main focus the size of the mess is just towing the same old line. Divide on the points that make us feel better than another person and never actually address the root because it puts us on equal playing fields & we’re fed at every step how important it is to “be better” and “do better” than others like we aren’t all fighting some kind of battle. I agree 100 percent even as an addict and as a person who loves addicts that at the end of the day there is no justification for drug use, period. Everyone has a story and got to the point they are but to use terminology to excuse hurtful behavior is a cop out. We have to stop focusing on the small shit and get to the real root of the problem. Pharmaceutical companies had and have a hand in this epidemic but they don’t carry that weight alone. It’s no coincidence that even after all the information and education came out around opiates and even more specifically the Dr oxy pushers doing it solely to make more money, we have a more widespread addiction issue across the globe than ever before. Drug abuse is a symptom while also being an attempt at drowning those other symptoms - it doesn’t make sense but that’s the point it’s irrational. Addiction has so many different faces in multiple ways. It’s not just for the “poor and undereducated” it’s the millionaire soccer moms, drs, lawyers, politicians, etc. It’s not just narcotics it’s food, exercise, sleep, alcohol, approval, caffeine, social media, adrenaline inducing experiences, shopping, the internet, attention, cosmetics/surgery, competition, etc. i firmly believe that anything in excess is inherently dangerous and damaging. I guess what I’m trying to say is the focus should be on why we’re having to turn to, or feeling like we have to turn to, outside sources to feel ok in our own skin. We need to let go of judging the mask someone wears and focus on why they ever felt they had to put it on in the first place. The rest is just very purposely placed background noise in my opinion. Great reaction & thank you for starting conversation because somehow we’re more “connected” to other people than ever before while being more alone than most of those who came before us.
Sorry I didn’t mean it to turn into an essay or a rant but appreciate these types of outlets. For whatever reason typing it out strangers is so much easier for me than saying these things to the people close to me.

It’s definitely not ok to do drugs but it’s literally a chemical imbalance that affects people differently. I pray for anyone struggling with this demon.
