  • If this video was helpful to you, and you would really like to support my Channel, you can do so very easily by buying me a coffee here: www.buymeacoff...
    This video covers the situation where a biOrb doesn't have an airflow running through the tank even though the air pump is fully working.
    The video covers....
    - The main causes that result in this issue
    - How to fix the problem
    - How to avoid it happening again.
    Other reasons for a reduced or a lack of air flow:
    - Check that your air stone isn't overly dirty and clogged-up. This can impede air flow into the tank.
    - If the issue isn't to do with water stuck in the airline then it is very likely to be a problem with your air pump itself. Even though an air pump might sound like it is working perfectly, it doesn't necessarily mean that it has sufficient ability to blow air.
    My suggestions...
    - Always have a spare air pump just in case the one you use suddenly stops working: amzn.to/3EX5EwH
    - If replacing your airline make sure you get one that is the right diameter (5mm) and has a stop valve. I suggest you get an official biOrb replacement air line: included: amzn.to/45sCwIN
    - To reduce high airflow from your air pump (see my video on "Too many bubbles"), just get a cheap air flow regulator and add it to you biOrb airline (5 mm): amzn.to/46bvadM
    - Get a cheap bicycle pump (including an "airbed adapter" suitable that is for insertion into a biOrb airline). The one I have can be purchased here: amzn.to/45hAGKu
    Thanks for watching!

    Very useful thanks. I had some electrical work done in my house a couple of weeks ago necessitating regular turning off of the mains power. I wondered why my biorb pump didn’t start up after the power was back on. After swapping pumps and air stones and still no bubbles I instinctively blew into the tube. I wasn’t sure if this was the correct thing to do. Your video has reassured me. Cheers.

    Wonderful video Mark !!! I learned something new again.. I didn't know that fish 🐠 🐠 could even survive without the continuous air pumping nonstop haha !! so I always just leave it on and whenever I leave home I put the battey backup pump on just incase.. but now I know that fish 🐠 can be ok for a little while without continuous air so good to know this .. anyways I found this information to be such a relief ☺️ and I now have my air line a bit higher for better gravity flow too , so Thank you for all your Incredible information and time you take to explain things Happy tank means happy fish 🐠 🤗🐡💦💙✌️ your just the Best!!☆ loveu brother sincerely Artist Mark Laura B ♡ Sindra & Roxy and Buster the cat 🙀 🎉

      Hey Arty Mark! Thanks as always for your support. Yes, fish can happily go for numerous hours without the air pump on. Even then, it is more about providing water surface agitation rather than bubbles running through a biOrb bubble tube! Good idea to raise-up the airline, helps to combat gravity!
      Anyway, I always love your artwork, I'd love to talk about commissioning something with you.... before you become far too famous and expensive!! LOL!.

    Hi Mark, Thank you for running this channel. We're running into a new issue with our BiOrb Halo 30L. We've had this tank for 2 years and all has been well until last month. When we pulled out the center column, a huge cloud of debris was released from beneath the filter. The air pump seems to be working fine, bubbles rising up through the column as usual, the new airstone didn't change anything, and the new filter didn't change anything. There seems to be some debris making it through to the sponge but somehow a large percentage is getting trapped beneath the filter rather than going through it. We pulled out a bunch of the filtration stones to see if there was excess debris there, it was surprisingly clean. There seems to be a lot of debris beneath the plastic ring directly encircling the airstone but we can't get to it with the pump. Have you ever seen this before? Do you have tips for how to clean that section? Thanks so much

      Hi Tara. Really nice to hear from you. The only thing I can think of is food waste or it can be a result of white biOrb decorations (I have had numerous people saying that white biOrb decorations flake their outer colour/paint after a period of time). Do you have white decorations? If it is food waste then a gravel vac is the only way to remove it properly. When cleaning out my tanks I will always "hoover" the inside of the central filter to remove waste - which can often congregate there. Are you using the gravel vac I recommend on the Channel?: amzn.to/3S71ZE6. Let me know. Best, Mark

      @taramclaughlingiroud5424 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@StepbyStep-biOrb thank you so much for replying--we don't have white decorations. It definitely seems to be food waste but since we hadn't changed how we'd been feeding them I assumed it was something not working right with the filtration. I will pay closer attention to the amount of food going forward. We don't have that vacuum, but definitely intrigued! We just suck up the debris with the water changes with the hand pump hose but I love that this device allows you to remove waste on its own! Thanks again for your reply and for the channel. It's been a great support for us with our biorb.

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb

      Hi Tara. Yes, get one of those gravel vacs! They work a treat for removing waste. I agree it sounds like food waste build up, so it might also be present under your ceramic/pearl media. It is certainly good to reduce this waste down as this would help with the tank's water quality. The vacs are really cheap to buy and easy to use. If you add the filter bag to it, you would be able to give the tank a good vac (without extracting tank water). Following that, connecting the hose to the vac allows it to be used for water changes. Hi i just watched most of your videos today. What do you recommend for cleaning a biorb acrylic glass. On my normal glass fish tanks i use a razer blade. I know i can't use this on the Biorb. Biorb sells this rubber cleaner stick but it gets mixed reviews.

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  4 месяца назад +2

      Hi. Certainly don't use a blade or anything that will cause abrasion (scrubbers etc). I only really use the biOrb long brush for removing micro bubbles from the glass... it is really good for that (using the blade side). It isn't that great for cleaning though! The only thing I will use to clean the inside of the glass are the biOrb Cleaning Pads. The smooth side works well for most things and the rough side for anything that is more stubborn. I've used them for years with no problems at all. On the outside I use the High gloss polish and cloth (really good product and lasts for ages!). That's all I use! My key focus is probably on water quality, to help reduce diatoms/ algae (and other staining), so I perhaps only wipe the inside of the glass every couple of months. Hope that helps. Best wishes, Mark

    Hi. I have an issue where I have no bubbles but the pipe is completely clear. I have blown down it and get bubbles, but when I connect the motor (which is definitely working as it is vibrating) it doesn’t push any air through and I still get no bubbles, despite the tube being clear. Any ideas? Should I cut the bottom of the tube as it may be leaking air at that point? Thanks

    Hey! 9 months ago was your last post! Hope you are doing ok and that your tanks are doing well? So my cold water tank is doing well with the birth of a second round of babies from my Platy’s! It’s a classic round tank. I just wondered if you know of anything good to put the babies in, inside the tank? The last thing I had I had to stop using as the lid kept coming off and it was designed for a square tank which I don’t have. We have rescued some babies from inside the filter! :(

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  Месяц назад +1

      Hi again. I'm not aware of anything that would work in a classic shape. Saying that, most biOrbs are the same due to the limited access space of the lid aperture. There are a wide variety of products that can be incorporated in standard aquariums, with most being the hang-on-back nurseries. The type of product you would probably need is a Net Trap Box Hatchery - but I think you would struggle to find anything that would fit or work suitably in a biOrb. If trying to limit predation then the key thing with fry is to provide plenty of safe hiding (escape options) places at the bottom of the tank. Overall, the very best approach is to set-up a separate nano-tank and add the fry to that (if you can catch them!. Once the fry get to a good size they can be added back into the main tank. M

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Mark. You can use any brand/ type of air pump on a biOrb. The key things are:
      - Choose one that just has a single airline outline (some pumps allow the addition of more than one airline). Amazon is a good place to look as it contains a large range of product options.
      - It's good to consider one that has a dial that allows adjustment of air flow (or, alternatively... use an air regulator that can easily be fitted to the airline to adjust air)
      - Air pump adverts describe the range of tank sizes that the pump supports. Obviously choose one that has a range that suits your tank size. I would generally avoid one that is too over-specced (i.e. suitable for a very large aquarium) as these will be over powered for a biOrb and can often have increased noise.
      Hope that helps my friend. Best wishes, M.

    Hi Mark - great videos and great advice. I am new to keeping fish (been at it 4 months now) all was great in the first couple of months, fish seemed happy and healthy but just recently i keep losing fish. I Have 5 neon tetras and 4 endler guppies in a 30l Biorb. Although yesterday i lost one of each and i dont know why! All my water levels were good apart from ammonia which had a spike at around 0.25/0.50 but from day 1 my ammonia level has never been at 0 its always sat at around 0.25.
    I do weekly water changes at 10l each time and add biological boost and use water treatment. I feed once a day (small ish amount). My water temp is always around 25. They just seem to be really unhappy at the moment and iv got a feeling im going to lose more. Im not sure what iv done wrong. Any advice would be greatly recieved. Thank you

      Hi Lee. Great to hear from you, but sorry to hear you've been having issues.
      The fish species you have is a mix of water quality preferences (endler's - hard water, neon - soft water). I would also advise not to add neons to a tank until the tank has matured and is stable (tends to be 6-months plus) as the species can have a tendency to struggle in tanks that have changing parameters.
      Sorry, some questions...
      In terms of you tank pH what reading do you have? In terms of your ammonia reading at 0.25. This sounds like your tank is not fully cycled. Are you showing a constant reading of zero for nitrite?
      Your weekly water changes of 1/3rd sound fine, but this being dependent on how much nitrate your tank is carrying and the readings you have in your tap water. What is your tank nitrate level prior to undertaking water changes and what is your tap reading?
      Armed with all that I should be able to advise. You mention adding a biological booster, is that the biOrb product?
      Let me know! Best wishes, Mark

      @@StepbyStep-biOrb Thank You for replying to my comment, much appreciated.
      My biorb is 4 months old, i cycled (or at least thought i had) with guppies. Two weeks ago i checked my water parameters and everything seemed great. PH was 7.6/7.8 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 and Nitrate 0.2. So i gathered it was cycled and added the neons. They seemed to be doing great and really thriving in the biorb, eating well and exploring. Now they are just hiding constantly at the back of the biorb and sitting at the bottom. On saturday the water looked a little murky so i did a 13ltr water change. Was this too much? Because thats when things have gone down hill.
      My water parameters are currently reading PH7.6/7.8 Ammonia 0.25/0.50 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0.5. I feel like iv started the whole process of cycling again or maybe it has never been cycled in the first place.
      I am using aquacare bio-boost.
      I thought i had it sussed, i did lots of research before starting this hobby and watched many of your videos, but now im all flustered and confused and feel iv made a real mess of my biorb :(

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Lee. If it is particularly the neons that are seeming to be unhappy then I think this reflects your water parameters (pH7.6/7.8 and likely hard water) not being ideal. The Endler's should be reasonably happy with the water quality you have (but would be good to get rid of that lingering ammonia!). It is possible that your tank wasn't fully cycled or at least the beneficial bacteria you have wasn't/isn't fully establish. The large water change, of nearly 50%, might be a key cause especially with the neons - if the fresh water quality added was far different from those in the tank. Ideally neons needs stable conditions and do not like large variations (which can be triggered with large water changes). I would limit those to weekly and do 1/4 tank changes as it seems from your readings that your nitrates are low (higher nitrates being the main trigger for undertaking water changes). You mention that the water looked murky, do you mean grey/cloudy? Cloudy water is often a sign that a beneficial bacterial colony isn't formed enough (this normally happens with a new tank or following an overly intensive clean of the media, inside glass, sculptures etc. This sounds a bit like new tank syndrome. A boost of bacterial product is often the fix for this when a tank that has been running for a period of time. I think the bio-boost is a good product so continue to use that to boost your bacteria. As well as limiting your water change try undertaking maintenance on a different day to water changes (say several days between the two things) for a while to see if this helps to get things back on an even keel. Fingers crossed, the above should help to solve the issues. Best, Mark

      @@StepbyStep-biOrb Thank You Mark, that is really helpful.
      Yes it is mainly the neons that seem unhappy. Is there anything i can do to change the hardness of the water for them?
      Yes the water was a bit cloudy so thats when i performed a large water change.
      How often should i use the bio boost? I was using it once a week with a water change, should i be adding daily until cycled?
      You mention undertaking maintenance on a different day to water changes, can i ask what you mean by maintenance?
      Is it best to just leave the tank alone now and let it run its cycle?
      Thanks again for your help,

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  11 месяцев назад

      Hi Lee. It is always going to be very difficult as your water sounds good for your Endlers, but less so for neons. You could indeed soften the water but every time you undertake a water change you would be then readjusting the water quality back towards what it is in your tap water. I'm afraid you would end up trying to chase a certain water quality that could also be detrimental for the Endler's.
      With cloudy water (i.e. a bacterial bloom), an addition of an aquarium bacterial booster normally helps to fix this. Undertaking a water changes may simply prolong the cloudiness by adding new minerals/ nutrients to further support the bacterial bloom that causes the cloudy water condition.
      However, I think the main issue, and the key thing you can do, is to try to avoid big/rapid changes in water quality for the neons. Try to stabilise the water conditions as much as possible, by using smaller water changes but ensuring that nitrates don't creep up too much. Undertake weekly 10l water changes to see if that helps and see what your nitrates rise to just prior to undertaking a water change.
      You mentioned that your tank nitrate reading is 0.2ppm. Have you confirmed through your water supplier's water quality info (for your postcode) that you are getting such low levels in your tap? Aquarium water test kits generally would not be able to read a level as low as 0.2ppm, normally readings are zero, 5.0ppm, 10ppm, 20ppm etc.. If you give me your water suppliers name and your post code I can check your tap level for you as this would be indicative of what your tank nitrates would be.
      In terms of maintenance, I was referring to removing waste trapped under the media (using a vac), cleaning the inside of the tank glass, replacing the sponge filter etc. Just do those types of activities on a different day to the day you undertake water change - just for the time being.
      I'd be tempted to suggest that you move away from bio boost (I looked into this product and found the guidance on its use seems to be highly varied, even if sought from Maidenhead who produce it). You may find something like Aquavitro Seed a better product for pushing the cycle though and getting a good beneficial bacterial colony established. You would probably need to get this via online purchase. I haven't used bio boost so it is difficult to understand how well the product performs for undertaking cycling and therefore for me to suggest how much should be added. As it is a natural product its use isn't going to be detrimental. If using Aquavitro Seed I would suggest following the bottle instructions, as though starting a new tank, as I'm sure that it would help fix your ammonia level and get you beneficial bacterial colony to a size to support better water quality.
      Hope that helps. Best, Mark

    Hi Mark, thanks for the video. Is it possible to change the airline connected to the back of the tank having water and fish inside the tank? My water line has some white residue on it (it doesn't look like there is water on the line but it is foggy, similar to slime) before the one way valve. The bubbles I get are very few, tried blowing air but it's super difficult, feels like it's something obstructing the air line. Bought a new airline but I am not sure if it is safe to unplug it from the back of the tank with water and fish in there. Thank you!

    • @StepbyStep-biOrb
      @StepbyStep-biOrb  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Daniel. I am not sure whether the change of the complete airline can be applied when you have a full tank. My intial view is Yes as I understand that various biOrb tank models have a built in one way valve that sits directly under the tank's base. The use of a bicycle air pump can help to reset the direction of the tank valve in the case of poor airflow and can help clear blockage. Clearly the tank valve is there to stop tank water from draining when the airline is removed, making it safe to do. But, to be safe, I would suggest that you directly contact your Oase biOrb technical advice team and let them know what you plan to do and which biOrb model you have. I (and many others) have found them reasonably good at responding so I would certainly suggest doing that. BTW let me know how you get on. Best wishes, Mark

      Great news Daniel! Hopefully the air flow will remain good from now on. If not, you know how to fix it :)
