I love the faint desperation in Jonathan Pryce's voice. He's consumed with getting his target, and it frustrates him to have to 'play games' to get it.
@doctorwho0077 yep that's rage..you can feel the micro-fraction that's holding him back from just beating the shit out of him..Jonathan Pryce with his words and movements takes the tension to 11, it's like watching an overwound spring about to break.. fantastic acting.
Most ghastly occurances often occur in broad daylight in full view of everyone yet there are never any witnesses. That is truly creepy. Best funeral March ever btw...
'Come visit me Sir, if you wish to improve your education'. 'I will, and I may improve yours'. In this scene, Pryce is more chilling and menacing than his compatriot Anthony Hopkins, in 'Silence of the Lambs'.
Not only an amazing movie, but a seriously inspiring performance by one of the world's best actors - Jonathan Pryce. The movie score (both of them, one that was used and the one that was cast away last minute for being too broody and dark) are amazing, and great sources for samples.
had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago and he told me he was more intimidated about doing that scene with Jason Robards then doing the entire film. He wanted to "get it right" and appear as menacing as can be, I think he hit it out of the park
The book says that it was Chopin's Funeral March being played backwards, but here in the film it's actually Beethoven's Eroica 2nd Movement (played normally).
This post was 3 years ago. I can't think of a single Disney movie that's been good since! All their "live action" reboots and reimaginings 🤮 S-U-C-K so badly, they should rename their company to Hoover!
@@lorimorris6520 I remember that scene in the end where Mr. Dark rode the carousel forward in time and aged until he turned into a skeleton, that was crazy! PS. J. Pryce is a nice looking man(he looked great when he played “Mr. Dark!”
This era of Disney movies were my favorite as they came out when I was a kid entering young adulthood. This was before it went Full Corporate under Michael Eisner's tutelage and it was competing in the competitive space innovated by Spielberg and Lucas. There's a darkness to this movie that is both sinister and cute and it plays out like an Edgar Allan Poe short story (notice how studios avoid making movies of his stories these days?) but we'll never see again from today's Disney Corp as they're more interested in maximizing demographic profit dollars by making everything generally bland and consumable.
A wonderful movie that accurately warns us about the evil in our midst that ever seeks our destruction. Most people do not realize they were born into a world at war between good and evil. Between God and the father of Lies. Pray for wisdom, it is more precious than gold.
God is a human creation. Not the other way 'round. No God. No devil. No superstition. No spirits. No ghosts. No demons. No angels. Nope. No proof either. Just stories, and a bunch of crazy motherfuckers who believe them and would kill to maintain the lie. Peace
Actually, the story delves into the complexity into each person's mind, including the younger ones. Quite the opposite of "the battle between Good and Evil".
This movie was definitely a classic! J. Pryce’s character as Mr. Dark was pretty intense, especially in this creepy video! And the way Dark stared at Jason R. after he was done questioning him was equally unsettling!
AMAZING FILM. Way Mr. Dark walks... creepy. If i recall boy with football was either elderly or young and disabled who wished from Mr. Dark to be healthy/young again and play football professionally but became eternally a child.
he was 59 when most of the filming was done in the fall of 1981. In one of the reshoots done a year later in 1982 - Where Will tells his father he loves him in the Hall of Mirrors near the end of the movie - he was only 60. So yes, he did look older than his real age.
HISHE: "Hello, town police? Yes, I'd like to report possible child endanngerrment. I was just approached by a man looking for a couple of children and he has tattoos of their faces on his palms. What's that? Oh, oh yes well he's about six foot one, caucasian, mid forties and harmed himself right in front of me. He's wearing a costume that looks like it's from the 1920's and left his blood on the north sidewalk of the north east intersection of Fifth and Seventh". Later on, the cops come by to investigate the blood, bring the old man down to the carnival to confirm the identity of the man he reported. The cops then question Mister Dark: Investigator: "So you came to our town, for what reason?" Mr. Dark: "I am here because I need Will Halloway and Jim Nightshade to ride my carousel". Investigator: "Okay sir you're under arrest for attempted kidnapping and attempted interference with a minor!" The cops arrest Mr Dark and as he's being put into the police car, he sees Charles Mr. Dark: "I'll get you for this Charles!!"
In the book, the police do come to the carnival and question Mr. Dark, but all seems well and the kids can't prove anything. Such would be the case in this film. Dark has supernatural powers and the police would see nothing wrong.
I have a remake in the works, I intend to keep the original flavour and style but way darker too, the characters are more sinister and deeper, and you see their nice facade, then their darker hidden personas. Wouldn't be as good. The casting for this 1983 movie was spot on brillant. The acting by all involved, especially Jonathyn Pryce (Mr. Dark), Jason Robards (Charles Halloway, Will's dad) and the two child actors, Vidal Peterson (Will Halloway) & Shawn Carson (Jim Nightshade) were great. I wonder whatever happened to Vidal Peterson and Shawn Carson?
Ludwig van Beethoven's "Eroica" Third Symphony, second movement (funeral march) To bad the performance the Carnval band performs isnt on the soundtrack.
All these years I thought it was Chopin's funeral march being played backwards. It would make sense given Mr Dark's ability to reverse the effects of aging in people, perhaps even keep them from dying. For a price, of course.
Whatever happened to the child star Vidal Peterson who played Will Halloway? I thought both he and Sean Carson, who played Jim Nightshade, were very good. The connection between Charles Halloway (Jason Robards) and his son Will Halloway (Vidal Peterson) is very poignant. Love this movie.
I literally just now got it! This scene scene, and the whole story is heart wrenching and creepy, but it all works off of a parents wish to keep their child innocent. Throw in the small town aspect and you have outsiders and their worldly ways encroaching on your children. That’s the October people. Honestly I see more layers here than that but I don’t want to write my own book here.
Trying to look up the funeral March that the band is playing But I cant find anything that sounds the same Can anybody tell me who the original composer is?
This is one of my absolute favorite film scenes of ALL time because it was the first time in my life as a child I had ever seen what a lie is and looks like...he already knew he was going to be lied to before he asked and I can't tell you how many thousands of times in my life since then I've literally experienced the same exact thing and I always approach a liar in the same exact way as Mr Dark and look right through your soul exactly the same way he does if warranted...I've realized over the course of my life to be a 🪞 and you will see all🤨
This movie is the first time I ever saw Jonathan Pryce and he had me immediately. I've been a fan since then.
Mr Dark is pretty much the Coachman from Pinocchio, the Child Catcher, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, and Satan himself wrapped up into one character.
Such a deeply underrated film. Really a modern classic.

Watch the denizens of N'awlins perform their for-real funeral march. It's called _Second Line_ and it's really cool to watch.

I remember they play this music in Civilization II whenever a civilization is completely eradicated.
