HELLO MY BBs! I'm so sorry for the late night upload, I hope you guys enjoy this strange deep dive into the history of lipsticks! Who got a notif for this video? Love, Saf
As a history teacher I really appreciate how you are teaching history and making it accessible and interesting for such a huge audience who may think otherwise that history is boring!
Kelsey Centeno that's totally unrelated but styles and fashion in general has changed drastically, and people became more interested in sleeker-slimmer designs
True!! It's about convenience now though since your average working woman wants to wear makeup... it just makes sense to have makeup that's slimmer and can fit in a purse or wherever
ive rewatched these history of videos so many times, as a history nerd, its so interesting to watch especially since Saf is the narator!! do more of these pretty please, perhaps with the history of jeans, or skincare, or piercings?
People weren't very educated, smart, nor advanced enough to figure out that mercury and lead were bad...they used mercury and heroin as medicine for babies or children back then in different eras. Yeah...a lot of fucked up things back then...
I think the supposed inch of lipstick QE1 wore wasn't an inch thick layer but an inch thick line around her lip area. Since lead poisoning destroys one's face it might have been a way to try to replace the lips that fell off.
Saph: The 30s and 40s brought the great depression and world war II. But that didnt stop lipstick sales. Woman at the time: I'm sad but I still gotta look fabulous😗
hoe Why do people keep saying that? Yes she got a sponsor but comments like these will prevent her from getting a sponsor from this company. I hope people realize that the company sees these comments and most companies don't want people commenting this. Go see heyparis video about getting sponsor.
Jknewsfann ™ Because Audible has been sponsoring only the best RUclipsrs since RUclips first started. Getting sponsored by amazon, one of the richest companies in the world, is a big feat and achievement and SHOULD be praised and celebrated. It basically means saf has made it to the top of RUclips in such a short amount of time. Getting sponsored by amazon ENCOURAGES other companies to sponsor saf...
Jknewsfann ™ some people might not know its sponsored? 😂😂 she literally thanks audible for sponsoring the video within the first minute... Also, I doubt audible is scrolling trough her comments, they have better things to do.
Although she disclosed that it was sponsored companies don't want to see comments like these. I've had personally experience were I almost lost a sponsorship because people were commenting things like these. I have a large following on Instagram and people kept commenting "get your coin" or "get that sponsorship" comments like those could prevent saf from getting future sponsorships.
But, my grandmother, who was in her 20s during the war, wore lipstick but scolded me if I ever dared to put it on in public, like powdering my nose and touching my lipstick up after a meal. 😂😂
Yup.....the history of kohl (and how it is still used in the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia today....” The Egyptians used to because it prevented many eye afflictions from the silica in sand.
Your intelligence is so welcome Saf 😍😍😍😍 I'm loving the history lessons. But my boyfriend might be tired of me pausing the video every couple seconds and hitting him with random knowledge
I heard that 1900's silent film stars wore black lipstick because it showed up darker on camera. (and of course you couldn't tell the color) Anyways, great video! 💖💖
Shmoop Shmoop it wasn't only silent films or makeup! Apparently in all black and white films the costumes were ridiculously colored so they would have good contrast in black and white.
History lessons you could hold us next😄: •eyeliner •eyeshadow •brows and lashes •shoes •nail polish •bathing suites/bikinis •hair •bodygoals trough history tell me down in the comments wich one you like the most and if you got new idews tooo!!! Saf we neeed more videos like this!!!!😄😄😄
This is seriously a fantastic idea! :) all though I'm 8 months late to the party. I'm still holding out that this could become a thing on the channel! :). Would definitely personally be very interested in the body image one through history!
This is why I love Saf, she actually puts time and effort into her makeup videos rather than just give her opinion on a new lipstick she gives us the history of all lipsticks.
I actually have a push-up lipstick, and it still has the lipstick in it! It's wearable. But I wouldn't exactly suggest that lol. It looks like a lot like the second tube from the left at 11:08. It was my great grandmothers. Her mother, was a flapper. It's a beautiful dark peachy shade. I got it from my great grandfather, who keeps most things from his wife. I am named after my grandma Marion. And the lipstick still has its case. I love my family. It's all so interesting. I am related to some historical, influential people. It's just so amazing to see pieces of history like that.
That's really cool I've always loved the history of makeup especially after WWII because women always made up their face to get a husband because they might have lost their husband in the war. Off the topic of makeup but during WWII the man and woman usually got married within a week of getting engaged because you didn't know if he was going to get shipped off soon
So there was a Broadway musical called War Paint about Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. it was cool to see that the actual ads of the time were used in the show and how historically accurate the story was
Is it?? A double sponsor??? Woahhh.... woah woah woah. it's starting to even maybe look like a triple sponsor??? Saf is killing it. I feel like I have been waiting for this content from her all my life.
Well, she can tell you about makeup and clothing, but I'm not sure what she has to say about the Battle of Waterloo or the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire.
I'm watching Call The Midwife ATM, and one episode dealt with a sex Ed class and they showed the disposable pads from the time (1963), and they weren't the sticky ones we use today, they had a belt to keep them up
Jade Green Yes she would if she was born in 1997 she would be 20 now but she wouldn't really remember anything but if she was at least 7 she would only be 27 now so I think it is possible
You put so much effort in your videos, I love it. It is so nice to see that there are some people on RUclips who make good, thoughtful content. I am so glad you have your own channel. :)
I'm in Cosmetology school and for our makeup chapter I showed my instructor this video and he played it for the whole class. So Safiya is helping educate future professionals in the beauty industry!

Have you tried Besame cosmetics? They have period accurate lipsticks back to the 1910's and up to the 1960's or 70's. Other makeup too but I love their lipsticks! :)
I really like the 'history of' videos. This reminded me of when my grandmother would always reapply her favourite dark red (no mirror necessary) and I thought it was the most grown up classy and feminine thing to do. Please keep making more of these videos :)
That reminds me that your grandma''s and my mother's generations were so into lipstick that they could apply it on perfectly without even looking in the mirror !
I like how when Safiya does sponsors it isn't the entire video. I have nothing against people getting sponsors because youtube IS a job and they do need the money, but sometimes people babble about their sponsor the entire video/ at a bad time.
dexa101 Well depending on the type of sponsor, they literally give a script for the YTer to read off of & they HAVE TO if they want that sponsor--hence the babbling aka long explanation of what the product is. SAF! its my 13th BIRTHDAY today, and I've been watching you for pretty much the whole time you've had your channel, and it would mean the world if you saw this! I love you !
Now, THAT'S the kind of content I like to see on RUclips! I love Safiya's videos as she is actually thinking about her contents and does something creative. Who the hell needs all these challenges and all that other bullshit? Saf for the win! haha
There are a lot of youtubers who advertise audible, but you are the first one who actually made me genuinely think about getting it. I LOVE how much research goes into all of your videos 😊 I think it’s so fun that you learn about all these cool topics as a part of your job. I’m for sure going to look into the history of makeup books you recommended 🤓

I agree with you (I was a history major in college). love Safiya spreading cool historical info in a fun way!
marisdc Yes! Definitely a fresh approach to a history video.
I *love* how Saf's lip color changes with what she is talking about
Why are old makeup compacts so much cooler than now ?
Kelsey Centeno that's totally unrelated but styles and fashion in general has changed drastically, and people became more interested in sleeker-slimmer designs

If Saf was still in school and had to write an essay about lipstick she'd totally get an A+
Elizabeth I.: Thinks lipstick has health properties.
Also Elizabeth I.: Puts lead in her face.
Christian Pasche 😂😂
That’s what I thought 😂
HA😂😂😂
People weren't very educated, smart, nor advanced enough to figure out that mercury and lead were bad...they used mercury and heroin as medicine for babies or children back then in different eras. Yeah...a lot of fucked up things back then...

Endzi Stankovic this is so accurate 😂
I swear Saf is always on trending!!!!
Lindsey cole It honestly doesn't surprise me,her videos are awesome! 😄
they are! Well thought out!
Lindsey cole ikr!
My favorite part about this video is that each time Safiya introduces a new time period of lipstick, her lipstick color changes! Great touch!💋💄
Maddie Ann yeah i notice that too and i think it is kinda funny and cool!
She does the same for a video about the history of chokers!
Saph: The 30s and 40s brought the great depression and world war II. But that didnt stop lipstick sales.

Fun fact in the forties lipstick was considered patriotic because hitler hated lipstick
Specifically bright red lipstick, because he thought it was too much of a statement for women.
Actually it was considered patriotic because the Americans engineered a colour call victory red to boost moral but that could also be true
But, my grandmother, who was in her 20s during the war, wore lipstick but scolded me if I ever dared to put it on in public, like powdering my nose and touching my lipstick up after a meal. 😂😂
**furiously slathers on lipstick**
I will be wearing lipstick more often now
Can you do this with eyeliner eyeshadow and other makeup

Lexy Rose I think that liza koshy should make that video I doubt she would do it though

9:39 lmao I'm dying the look on the woman on the lefts face, just the sheer determination in her eyes
Yes XD
Now, THAT'S the kind of content I like to see on RUclips! I love Safiya's videos as she is actually thinking about her contents and does something creative. Who the hell needs all these challenges and all that other bullshit? Saf for the win! haha
Really enjoying your background music changes to go with the time period you're discussing. 😉👍🏻
I feel like I was listening to a school report but better 😂
I died laughing at your profile pic!
The lipstick with mirror is dope we need to bring that back!
I think that this is the most education I have had from a RUclips video
Why couldn't Safiya be my teacher in school? I would never fall asleep in class ! Lol 😂
itsKristiii i
I'm in love with Safiyas history voice😂❤
love u kk!
My favorite part of these videos is when she changes her lipstick/chokers ext... based on what she's talking about, it's so clever!! 💕
So... can we please talk about how good Saf looks with a red lip😍
Can we just appreciate how saf use so much time and effort on her videos for us, my smol bean omg 🖤🖤ly saf
Safiya is so good at making these types of videos. I just love how factual and professional she is.
