  • The surprise German Ardennes offensive in the snows of December 1944 was Hitler’s last great gamble of World War Two. The ambitious plan was for the German Army to drive through to Antwerp, thereby splitting US and British forces and seizing the initiative in the west. The attack came as a nasty shock to Eisenhower and only the bravery of the American defenders and speedy reinforcement by 200,000 troops prevented its success. Gradually, however, the attacker’s were driven back and eventually the increasingly unstable Hitler ordered a withdrawal from the ‘bulge’.
The Battle of the Bulge was the largest land battle fought by US forces during the war - losses were put at more than 75,000 men. The failure of the Ardennes Offensive sealed Nazi Germany’s fate.

I'd choose Battlefield, World at War, and the Soviet Storm series over this. But this is still great.

My grand pa was in the USAs 508 PIR 82nd A / B Div. ,and was wounded in the Ardennes , when the jeep he was riding in hit a landmine kia driver , and soldier behind , and wounding my grandpa , and soldier behind him . Both had laid on road side B-4 , and , luckily , were picked up by an American patrol . In the area , after murdering nearly 150 unarmed American soldiers , Waffen SS " Liebstandarte " Colonel Joachims'Piepers troops were roaming around . Pieper was responsible for the Malmady massacre .
After grandpa was fixed up , he was ordered , with other American medics , which grandpa was , to assist concentration camp victims ; it was an horrible experience . After the war , grandpa palpable PSTD issues hesitated his harrowing tales of the fighting between Normandys'jump on 6/6/1944 . Subsequently , he took part in the "Bocage " , Hedgerow bloody fighting , to "Operation Market Garden " mid 9/44 , to the "Battle If The Bulge " where the Americans lost nearly 20000 kia , including in the 8200 0 casualties suffered by the Americans .

Interesting and informative. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what/whom the orator was describing. Special thanks to veteran soldiers. Sharing personal information /combat experiences enabling historians to replicate Diaries/memoirs. For viewers to better appreciate what actually happened. A special shout out to the surrounded American forces whom refused the surrender & didn't. Fighting/perishing/ surviving knowing certain death/debilitating wounds were often times possible. Yet still advanced forward/held their ground. Regardless of the consequences in the face of over whelming odds at the onset of the battle of the bulge.

The fatal mistake the germans made was the murdereing of U.S. troops.Once the word got spread thru the american lines, the soldiers were convinced not to surrender, therefor to die in place if need be.This action was the turning point of the whole battle.

I don't know why it bugs me but for some reason when I hear English speakers attempting to out do each other with proper pronunciations of local regions, rivers, villages etc. it always gives me a good laugh @ their desire to sound super duper smart. Jesus Lynette its the Ardenne not the Au'den.

I should say he (then) & she (now) has always been & still is one of my favorite historical commentators. I find it interesting how many shows he contributed to before theys lifestyle change & now I rarely see they (damn I'm getting good at this, my social score should be rising) I have no numbers to back that statement, just an observation, used to see him a lot, changes his sex, rarely seen. Maybe the History channel & others aren't so tolerant & just blowing liberal smoke up our a*ses.
