Replaced my Golf R estate with this and I have to say, I love it. I would improve the lights and suspension but overall, it’s more fun to drive and offers real value for money.

As a young driver in the UK this car is very close to perfect. Cheap to buy, insure and run, desirable VW badge(along with GTI badging too!), practically small enough to use in large over crowded cities and it isnt fast enough to kill you when racing between the lights! it is fast enough to enjoy more than the standard new driver choices
personally as someone who likes cars enough but not a car enthusiast, I would certainly look at one of these as a first car which will look good on the road aswell as instagram social media ;) ... i am the VW target market

Anyone who slags this car off! Hasn't drove one. Fast for what it is, it really will put a smile on your face, amazing value, future classic.
I"m sure it's good but VW boasted back in 2017 that it would do 225kph and it can't even come close. So no thank you.
Yeah, but it's too small, and doesn't have 5009bhp...so it's crap! Don't try to change those people, they wouldn't even be willing to try it...

Great review thanks! My husband and I think about getting either a VW UP!, or a Skoda Citigo (which of course are pretty similar), this all sounds pretty great for our needs, since we will drive in the city like 90% and need a cheap, decent car for everyday needs. Since I am a big person, the extra room in the front sounds very good, which was one of my concerns with buying a small car. But a small car is really all we need. So I am looking forward to test drive the UP! soon.

It is an inexpensive small car that is fun to drive. One always gets the comments that it should have more power, shouldn't be called a GTI etc. etc. But the spec suits my requirements for a 2nd car perfectly. The waiting list suggests that I am not the only one! They are coming through a bit quicker now. I ordered late July, and it has just been built and on its way to the dealer.
In Denmark the Swift sport is about the same price, has LED lamps and all the extras.. it's a much better deal, with better space, better seats, Sat nav, 7" info system
The seeing the dials part is not true. I've got an up! And I can see the dials no problem at all
The real star of this video is the scarf.

Out of the three mentioned at the start (this, the Twingo, or the 595) I'd have this. It's faster than the Twingo and isn't as immature as the 595.

Golf MK1 2 and 3 8v Gti engines all had about 115hp.
And there is nothing wrong with the steering.

Quite like the Up as a fun small car - but in the end I bought a classic original Mini Cooper for about the same money. Not as practical as the Up, but perfect for an occasional blast on Welsh country roads without losing your licence. If I ever sell it, I should get my money back too!

I have both, the GTI is a great daily, and the Cooper S is tremendous fun.

Would of been a hot hatch in the 80's like MK1 Golf and MK3 XR3i days. I've driven the Suzuki Sport which I'd rather have, was fun, feel nippy, put a smile on your face and you can feel the sense of speed. What Car gave a 2 star overall rating for the Seat Leon Cupra, WTF.

This is more of a hot city car. It has 115hp, which in hot hatch numbers is very low, but very high for city cars. Skoda should make a Citigo vRS. Or a SEAT Mii Cupra.

Great review Rebecca, this Up! GTi is not in the same class/category as a Honda Civic Type R, that would be the Golf GTi, So I am little bemused as to what you compared the two...scratches head.
How could you possibly recommend VW UP? MINI is the only option in this segment in UK.

It has never been an issue whether VW's are performance machines or not - what is an issue is their reliability and how well the dealer will back you up if you do have an issue. After 3 to 4 years these vehicles have a history of increasing expensive repairs and the cost of ownership becomes a burden. This includes issues of excess consumption of motor oil where the dealer claims this is perfectly normal - well it's not normal. Let the buyer beware.
Swift Sport. A much better drivers car, and very close in cost once you spec up the GTI.
Is there room under the hood for a supercharger and or another turbocharger?
No, but if you remove the rear seats, you can probably get an older V10 F1 engine in

Part of me thinks using the gti badge on anything but a golf is just a cheap marketing trick that dilutes the brand. On the other hand this up is probably more like the original gti than the current golf.

Had a 2013 up! And it was shocking gearbox rattling like a bag of bolts at 40k, looks good but pretty crappy really under the gloss.
I have to disagree, I have a 2013 up, had it since I passed my test, sitting at fifty thousand something miles and still runs great. Guess you had back luck
Its rear windows don't roll down . This is a letdown . You should mention that .

@@pankajtayal4433 you don't buy an up if you want to carry passangers, expecialy an up gti. because for the same price you can get a midspeced polo, which is quite a bit better for multiple passangers

As much as i love volkswagen, I dont think a 1.0L turbo counts as a hot hatch. I wish they did a 1.8L or 2.0L turbo version.
It's not always a big engine that makes the car fast, weight to power ratio also plays a huge factor as well as handling abilities, makes a car fun to drive.
You could put a 1.8L engine in a big heavy SUV and it wouldn't be as much fun as a 1.0L turbocharged tiny lightweight car 😀 plus this UP GTI has the same BHP as the first Golf GTI that defines today's hot hatches 👍
Yeah but how boring is a 1.0L turbo? Why stop there? They could stick a 1.6 turbo and it would be a proper hot hatch. The 1.0 should be the standard non GTI version.

No it isn't the best hot hatch you can buy. Look at those obscene 17" wheels !.I've just driven this car back to back with the new Kia Picanto GTS and that is streets ahead in every way--and far more reliable than any hyped up German brand.. AND you get all the kit that costs THOUSANDS more in the UP.
The wheels look superb, and the Picanto is a full second slower to 60!

The swift Sport is much better looking and drives nicer than this german bread box. Swift should be much more reliable too according to your own reliability surveys.

@richardhammer187 Disagree. I thought the same, but In person the Swift Sport is good (Especially in blue or slate grey. Absolutely destroys the UP GTI in every sense. Also the Swifts 0-60 is much much quicker than Suzuki claim.

How can a 15 thousand base price be a budget car? You can get a hell of a lot of car for that if you buy a nearly new car! No way would I buy this, it does look cool though
Lol. Following your own thinking, which you didn't, you can get a used Up! GTI in two years and pay 8.000 or less for it, which would make it well worth it.
Test it against Polo GTI.
Don't see why anyone would buy this over an Ibiza FR or a Polo GT.
Some live in big major cities like Leeds and parking is tight in the city centre but you also want it to be fast on nearby motorways which are entry points into the city centre like The A58M and M621 etc.
@@shanjanusman9974 I guess the small difference in size can help with those very tight parking spaces but still, the cars I listed are small enough for most :D

Depends on who's buying it, this car would be easy to insure compared to the other options you mentioned

best hot hatch on a budget??? i'll take a 500 Abarth over this anyday , more HP and a more sport look , you can buy a Stock Abarth 500 here in belgium for less then a stock UP gti

RJ CRIKEY I’ve got a Skoda Citigo with the same system and it’s a winner. Whenever you upgrade your phone you upgrade your infotainment system. I’d hate to be stuck with something that might have been crisp and cutting-edge in 2013.
It seems the scarf is getting more views than the car.

Look up the spec's for the original Golf GTi...
