- democracynow.org - We host a roundtable discussion on the life and legacy of John McCain, the Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war, six-term senator and two-time presidential candidate, who died Saturday at the age of 81 of brain cancer. We speak with Mehdi Hasan, columnist for The Intercept and host of their “Deconstructed” podcast. He’s also host of “UpFront” at Al Jazeera English. He’s been tweeting in response to McCain’s death and wrote a piece last year headlined “Despite What the Press Says, 'Maverick' McCain Has a Long and Distinguished Record of Horribleness.” We are also joined by Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CodePink, which McCain once referred to as “low-life scum,” and by Norman Solomon, national coordinator of RootsAction, executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy and author of “War Made Easy: How Presidents and Pundits Keep Spinning Us to Death.”

It's too bad that they didn't mention his first wife, her accident and his decision to dump her. It was the shameful action of the newly returned "hero" and reflects a character quite different from that now celebrated in the mass media.
I guess her accident is somehow important. Do tell.
One of the countries top war mongers, defense contractors will truly miss him.
So much so that they tweeted out condolences. I don't recall ever seeing something like that until now.
'top war mongers? hold my beer' says John Bolton.
That may be true, is there a war that both were not for though?
AMEN. SHEDDING ONE GIANT DIARRHEA TEAR on behalf of ERIC PRINCE AND THE other PAID "SOLDIERS" who have been caught out right bragging about raping young girls in the Middle East after killing their entire families. efforts to hold them accountable for murders committed even with the caveat they could have the first 2 for free, we're still a complete failure. This means there's no limit to the number of people they're allowed to kill and rape for their own personal pleasure. what in the hell would make you think they would come home and never murder and rape here?
"Hawkish" is just a euphemism for "Warmongering". Its never about defence. Its always about American aggression and dominance.
HE WAS A WARMONGER!!!
The U.S. is a warmongering nation. We the People allow it, either through patriotic fetishism, or through apathetic civil malfeasance.
By our general collective civil disengagement, we get the politicians, government, and subsequent wars we deserve.
Good riddance to all harbingers of War! Enjoy the hell you helped create! May you meet your victims and feel remorse if it's at all possible!
@@DanceQueen5122 Way to take civic responsibility for your countries foreign policy.
If you're not a U.S. citizen, disregard the previous statement.
@Karen Schumer Though few actually profit from war, based on frequency and duration, the entire nation acquiescence to it. The Reps are just less shy about it because they embrace their patriotic fetishism.
The nation also acquiesces to systemic and institutionalized racism, economic and political exploitation and materialism, along with the aforementioned for profit militarism that only benefits the military industrial complex and wealthy elites.
These three aspects, what MLK called the 3 Evils of American Society, are as American as baseball and apple pie. It exists as the status quo because we as a nation are an uncivil and unjust un-civilization.
Warmongering is largely responsible for the U.S. being a wealth nation. Everyone in America to some degree has benefited from that fact.
@Karen Schumer Oh Yes !
It's disturbing, when the pot calls the kettle black. It's depressing, when you realize, there are nothing but pots and kettles!
I question the "State Funeral." (Same for J. Edgar! FDR didn't have one...) If John McCain had not wanted so much military funding and his his daughter had not made the stand against universal healthcare, I would have a respect for him equal to any average person. He was NOT a great man!
I get the feeling that he was greater than most.
he's having 4 funerals that he laid out for his survivors. how do we survive 4x the bullshit?
I failed to realize something. He was a narcissist. It was the four funerals that gave it away.
fuckin' nuts , right? how much does he really think that the country loved him? wouldn't have two sufficed ? one public and one private.
Crazy!
McCain's election campaigns were always very well financed by the NRA and the arms and munitions industry. That money was clearly reflected in his voting record in the senate. McCain took large amounts of money from the NRA and that showed in his voting record.
My biggest beef with McCain was how he used his military service and praises for soldiers and veterans for votes but, in the senate, he consistently voted against bills to aid veterans, including bills for vets who were permanently disabled by war wounds. He was corrupted by corporate money.
He was one of the best people on the republican side of the aisle but that is a very, very low bar to be measured by.
Fair assessment.
He was such a "maverick" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👎

LMAO. McCain was a guaranteed party line vote 99% of the time. His 1 maverick vote was not scrapping ACA in favor of nothing. Trump is still pouting about that.
well that and how many times did mccain vote to repeal the aca? i can't remember how many times they held votes to repeal but it was more than once.
lol about the breast cancer mix up though
McCain: "If only I had a brain".
Thanks for the reality check on John McCain.
I never believed a word he ever said. He was just an evil disgusting person. He definitely will not be missed.
Damn, I didn't even know he had breast cancer too. That's rough!
Richard that was a great slip 😂
I didn’t know it was his 23rd mission dropping bombs.
Richard- probably a result of his transgender identity change surgery - hormone imbalance :)
He also had melanoma. This guy must’ve lived near a nuclear plant growing up.
Sandy dang,I've seen prettier trangenders.
I feel sad for his family and the way they are being disrespected by Trump during a time people should be given compassion. That being said, I discovered his record of misogyny during his last bid for president. He voted against the "Violence Against Women Act" it seemed to me he began to change after his cancer diagnosis and I respected the way he stopped people saying racist things at his rally but I've never forgotten he voted to allow men to continue abusing their wives.
It's unfortunate that your comment here has more information on his record of misogyny than the entire 22 minute video made by Democracy Now. They treated his misogyny like a casual side note.
Thank God for Democracy now.
I used to call him wishy washy, could not forget he gave light to palin, But I did give him back my respect after he did defend President Obama and then came to the floor and gave his last vote.
Thank you for the incredible content! I am a huge fan of the amazing work produced by DemocracyNow.
I'm a life long Conservative, but the truth is the truth, Thank you Amy .
It's very comforting seeing the establishment of both parties, the military industrial complex, and the mainstream media unite together in mourning of their fallen and favorite senator.
A single patriotic tear flows down my cheek...
I hope this is sarcasm.
Oh my God... Obviously...
don't drown.
Edward Kim Especially touching was to see two ex-first families passing candy across party lines. I sobbed 😿
Spot on. Hear! Hear!
A fair and balanced critique of the senator's record. I didn't know that he was so abusive in the second marriage. Finally, the rebuke to that blonde attacking Obama was in a town hall held in Lakeville, MN. Not so Minnesota nice😕. However, McCain did have a minute of redemption👍.
Fair and balanced? This was a hit piece on a dead man!
He was noooooooooooo angel at all.
DemocracyNow - always opening your mind. Thank you.
Honesty is painful, but necessary.
No matter what a person does or says, that person will never get everyone to agree with him. We, as a people, are very complex.
Thank god - finally fair and balanced about McCain. Well done Amy and DN !!! Only upside of the media circus is that Agent Orange in the White House cannot escape it.
Art Studio don't cry Hun, 2024 will be here soon enough. Maybe your girl Hillary will get a second shot in 2020...Lets hope so. If a red wave isn't already a sure enough thing, I'll take the insurance policy Hillary would be, just in case. PRESIDENT Trump, my president, and yours, will destroy any stooge they put in against him. I've never been more certain of anything. You might want to go north and live with Soy Boy in Ottawa until that time if it upsets you that much, because the red wave us coming, and coming with fury.
This is why I watch Democracy Now. I get the truth, instead of the nonsense I get from CNN, MSNBC, CBS, ABC, and 'HATE CENTRAL: FOX NEWS.
It's been worthwhile watching this show. Thank you.
Just wondering about a biblical passage that says you judge the sin not the sinner, but what could I say more to people that are delighted to judge but choose not to show their own sins? Immaculate people you are.
Very good discussion. Unfortunately the vast majority of Americans will never hear about any of what was discussed here because they have no interest in knowing the truth about one of their "heroes." As an ex-soldier (20 years service) I find it appalling that someone like McCain, who experienced war himself, would be so much in favour of starting new ones all over the place. McCain may have been one of the more decent Republicans but that ain't saying much.....
In his meeting May 27 2013, McCain met unvetted fighters for the insurgency against Assad. attending the meeting were Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, Abu Musa and other known terrorists. TOW missiles later appeared in their propaganda videos. I don't think McCain wittingly met with these people, but it shows how poorly trained we are in these kinds of arms deals in the middle east. I doubt McCain even knew the significance of the name Abu Bakr, or the charter agenda of the insurgents he was arranged to meet. McCain thought he was doing the right thing I suppose, so we at least can respect him for trying, without the vetted intelligence he should have assumed. May he rest in peace.
Very informative! Thanks so much!!!!
The only regret should be that this murderer didn’t die hanged for war crime.
If only the people who he killed or helped killed had a chance to choose to discontinue their treatment , be surrounded by their families and planned their funeral to the millimeter. The man was a low life warmonger and no one should feel sad for him . I’m sure he’s in hell burning right now.
Great show!
Excellent account of his legacy, thank you. Also, for a more humorous reflection, look for the 2008 Daily Show piece "Reformed Maverick".
Finally! This is the Democracy Now! I remember.
I don't know how they did it, there was so much! I'm a Vietnam vet and I remember his audio/video for the Viet Cong, how he caved in within a millisecond of capture. We despised him during and after. He's an awful human being, calling his wife C*** in public, got millions during the KEATING 5 scandal, attacked (verbally and physically) fellow senators, one in his 80s or 90s (Strom Thurmond) and others where EMTs had to be called! He's the only POW I've EVER heard of that gained weight during his royal treatment from the Viet Cong. What did he do that was good in any way? in any circumstance? He made sure that no rescue attempts would be allowed for POWs or MIAs that may still be alive in Vietnam, why?
I am a US Veteran but I despised the hateful, warmongering John McCain.
Too bad Speakers for the Dead don't exist. Would be interesting to hear what truths would be revealed at McCain's funeral...
Disagreed with him on some of his Politics, but he was a great patriot and believed in service to his country. Nobody is perfect, he was able see a bigger picture.
Dead or alive you are who you are. It is so refreshing hearing the truth. Good job DN👏👏👏👏
No mention of the Keating Five scandal?
THANK YOU DEMOCRACY NOW! Thank you for exposing the truth about a despicable human being!
Thank you for this. Hat's off to Goodman and DN.
I met McCain once and took a picture with him. Nice guy!
My ultimate administration:
President Ron Paul
Press Secretary: Dave Smith
Defense Secretary: Abby Martin
Secretary of State: Scott Horton
Fed chairman: Peter Schiff
How much did manafort and putin work with McCain ?
Remember he also called a person who was representing crew members of the USS LIBERTY "Jerk" during some sort of outdoor gathering. I forget if it was a Memorial Day gathering but I think it was. His father covered the attack up and McCain continued that tradition.
I don't think that anyone is falsifying anything or glorifying war or saying we agree with John McCain's politics. We are just looking at a man who engaged with hardship and difficulty and stood up for what he believed - we need such men on both sides of the issues. I marched against the war in Vietnam - but I do not think that negates his heroism or his patriotism.
Perfect !
To all of us here at Raytheon and Northrop Grumman, John McCain will be sorely missed.
A real maverick and hero the world is greatly diminished by the loss of one hell of a determined and valiant tumor. Tumor I salute you, sir may you rest in peace job well done and were all the better for you having existed... Seven gun salute play taps out of respect for that great American hero.
Brain cancer is an easy way out for him in this life but he will definitely pay the price for his crimes in the afterlife.
No love lost here.
May John McCain rot in hell
Thank you DN. It seems absurd to me that when politicians pass we are asked by main stream media to honor them as though they were something more than they really are. Like celebrities or superior beings?
@14:44 I was curious about the demeanor of his wife compared to his daughter at the eulogy.
There is at least one inaccuracy in this interview. John Mccain did regret his support for the Iraq war. In his new memoir, McCain who is battling brain cancer, writes that the Iraq War “can’t be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it,”
Saw an interview with Sydney Schanberg on this very program concerning McCains record in the military and as a prisoner…very interesting.
Thanks for the clarity. Compare this view with the airbrushed version on PBS. Thanks, Amy. Thanks for the truth.
I encourage everyone to support Democracy Now! even with a small donation. They don't take money from corporations and are thereby able to be independent in their reporting.
Thanks for the alternative view point. Biggest cheerleader for the war machine profit system.
If there was ever a phrase in the English language guaranteed to send me off into a coma of boredom it’s, “This is Democracy Now. DemocracyNow.org The War and Peace Report. I’m Amy Goodman.”
Will McCain's 40-city funeral tour be coming thru Pittsburgh?
Why would a senator from New York want a building named after McCain?
Not even the lion of the Senate, Edward Kennedy, of that senator from New York own party got such an honor.
Once again the media is so powerful. The funeral was beautiful, but the discussion here is good and healthy. The News reporting, as Dan Rather once said, is used to "excite" the intellect to gather information to find enough to make an opinion not really a judgement. A judgement is made to satisfy some conclusion of personal beliefs or that which is agreed upon. I think decisions are made based on that agreed upon reality. Ultimately with decisions comes responsibilities in the outcome. That's how we learn whether those judgements are a success or failure.
Amy, you know I've been listening to Democracy Now for decades because you are usually so straightforward and truthful--but you've gotten a few things wrong, here. In fact, a little bit of obit omit, yourselves. I'm aware that he was a hawk who never seemed to stop grandstanding for war, but I just saw video of McCain apologizing and admitting Iraq was a "big mistake". Also, MSNBC did a really good job of addressing the fact that he was part of the Keating 5 (and saying what you omitted, that he then voted for financial reform measures in an attempt to make up for that debacle), Meachem the historian and Mathews (who was no friend of McCains), Chris Hayes and Rachel all spoke of his warring ways and virtually no one on that channel "only" spoke well of him (as should be done for most of us upon our deaths) but also addressed his many flaws and errors. I'm not sure what mainstream media your guests were talking about, unless they've been watching Fox? Thank you for at least ending with his correction of the old xenophobe during his campaign. BTW; I'm a lifelong Henry Wallace Democrat, protested Viet Nam to the hilt, despise the Republican agenda and am horrified by Trumpism and all the deplorable divisiveness that implies. I just don't know what purpose is served by speaking ill of the dead without also addressing their humanity. I didn't like this piece. It was not balanced in any way. Thanks for listening.
Thanks for pointing out the true John McCain.
What he has been for me was incompetent pilot who tried to commit suicide.
I like this channel. And I did disagree with John McCain's stance on war, international relations and economics. But you'll never convince me that he was anything other than a fine upstanding man. He stood up against torture in the early 2000s when nobody would. He stood up against his party and his president on that. It takes guts to stand up to your enemies and he did that very well in his life. It takes integrity to stand up to your friends and he did that too. Was he perfect? No. Who is? He was a very good man. RIP
A bunch of decent Americans, very meaningful show.
I’m really glad that I watched this video because I was getting sucked in, believing the hype from the mainstream media about John McCain!
Lockheed Martin did a Eulogy for McCain. They will miss him greatly. That should tell you lots about McCain's character
Watching from Canada, after hearing the eulogies at his funeral, and listening to the main-stream media ...the entire sum scope I got was: he was human. I do think that while he was subjected to horrific torment at the hands of his captors, and survived that with honor...he DID come to appreciate and value his country. However, if people were honest about his life - he was a recognised war-monger. He did support ANY actions to destroy other countries...regardless of how illegal those wars were. Hillary Clinton WAS AND IS a vicious, destructive woman who laughed about getting an obvious child molester off, she laughed about all the innocent people that her country bombed, in fake wars, so they could walk in and rape that country of all its resources. These war-mongering people are specifically WHY Americans are so hated in many countries around the world. Where are the actions of peace that the USA so proudly and hypocritically pronounce all the time. Isn't it true that the USA, in it's long history, has only had a peaceful stance for approximately 17 years (without waging war on someone)? How can the USA run amok around the world bombing anyone they want to, disrupting other governments, killing off leaders - putting who the USA wants into that countries' governing body - in effect, lying to all while sending their own young people to die??? I do believe that the Admiral who said "the common soldier is just fodder for war" is actually what every american government really believes. Maybe eventually, if there is finally a President in office, who starts looking after his own people first, Instead of bombing others - the USA might prosper. Sadly - looking at history - that day is far, far, away.
Did Democracy Now ever ask John McCain these questions while he was alive? I'd have John McCain on my side any day compared to most of those politicians in both parties sitting in Congress today.
At the end of the report I have to say I can see why it was important to document and invite the guests on this news clip. I had no idea John McCain was so disrespectful to Americans speaking up to government officials who need to hear the people rather more often, not to mention war waged on other peoples. Maybe this is needed now when John McCain memories are in the news, but I would still have liked to wait a little longer and then make the report to capture the whole truth, after an appropriate, respectful grieving period.
while I am appalled by the left coverage of news lately, this gives me a real boost in respect for this venue Democracy now maintaining a consistent line.
Amy thanks for exposing him. thanks to your guests.
I still like the fact he and Russ Feingold pulled off campaign finance reform.
What are yall getting out of dragging a dead man's name through the mud? Damn. What person on this earth is perfect and without flaws? Name them?
Thank you for speaking truth to power McCain was the seed that sprouted the Trump Erā.
MacCain spent his brief moment on this physical plane worshipping ignorance (greed) and depreciating life. Instead of accumulating light and warmth by appreciating life, MacCain has dropped the clothing of this physical plane to become the darkness and emptiness that surrounds the stars. Not a bundle of light and warmth floating in heaven (joy and beauty). Love knows every star by name, but love does not know John MacCain.
He got a good plot in Arlington after doing his bit to leave the World on Fire and the Weather all Weird.
McCain joined the military in 1953 at age 17.
He was a Navy pilot ordered to bomb Vietnam.
He was a POW for 5.5 years, and
tortured.
Upon return home, divorced his 1st wife and married a beer heiress, Cindy.
Elected to Congress and Senate in 1986. Keating 5 defendent.
He was a moderate bipartisan player for the 90s.
Staunch advocate of Iraq War.
Nominated novice Sarah Palin as his VP running mate. Lost to Obama.
Trump ridiculed his service in 2015 and he and Trump were at odds personally.
Voted for Trump tax cuts and against Obamacare repeal
A mixed bag.
A life of wealth and comfort. He dumped his severely disfigured first wife, following an auto accident, for the rich life per an heiress. Integrity and character
clearly on display here. Sick of hearing about the 'hero' BS and multiple services at taxpayers expense. Goodbye!
The saddest thing is the Vietnamese didn't kill McCain because they thought keeping him alive would be an advantage their cause!!
Democracy Now, you put misogyny in the title, but you didn't talk about his misogyny at all, except for ONE comment made by Hasan about McCain's jokes about domestic violence and calling his wife a cunt....it was a casual side note. How was that not addressed in length, as well as his VAST record of misogyny? I expected more from you all, although Democracy Now seems to be shamefully lacking in terms of covering women's issues.
Rip. you John McCain, you sublime hero. You taught us to not leave rogue methods to rogue states. Now teach to God to not leave evil methods to devil.
The world is a safer place today.
The problem is not communism or capitalism..but human selfishness..laziness...greed...those are the reason tyrants exist on both systems
Thanks, it’s great to hear the dead who deserve it being ill spoken of.
Given that the U.S. exists due to aggressive action, much of it hailed by the media throughout the centuries, why would we expect anything different now.
McCain dehumanizes people of peace as “disgraceful scum,” and the media goes silent.
McCain never forgave the Vietnamese for what they did to him on the ground because he never felt and understood the damage he helped inflict from the air. That’s pretty much the history of the U.S. Accentuate what the “enemy” has done to the U.S.; ignore what we have done to the “enemy.”
Could we maybe wait a while after his death before attacking him?
He's not a threat to anyone right now, and there are more important things.
The media is vile indeed. That said, with regard to McCain's response to the woman at his rally, 'the decent family man' comment could be because the woman called him a terrorist. No, he's not a terrorist, he's a decent family man. But, if I were a racist, I would've associated the comment about being an Arab with being a decent family man. Therefore, all 3 guests were racists.
We lost Vietnam when Kennedy allowed the coup and assassination of Ngo Diem and his brother in 1963.
The defense of Kissinger was as disgraceful as that rant that followed the Rightful protests
( Code Pink- you go, girl! ).
He ran for president even with the possibility of skin cancer and then to have Sarah Palin as his running mate, thanks, John.
For these factors and more I will not waste any energy to mourn a man whom I lost respect for years ago.
People need to understand that you can disagree with policies McCain championed and/or voted for, and shouldn't hold it against him personally, especially after his death. The big issue isn't his beliefs, it's his war crimes in Vietnam. Now, he was almost killed when his plane was shot down and also in a prison where he was brutally tortured for 5.5 years as a POW (prisoner of war). However, he bombed Vietnam, including a lightbulb factory (a civilian target), likely killing multiple innocent people, which is a war crime and forbidden under international law. You can't look past that, even if he was punished and put in jail by the Vietnamese.
By the way, Mehdi, yes it's true that McCain never apologized for supporting the Iraq War, but he did to his credit admit it was a mistake and accepted his share of the blame for it.
As for NATO expansion, I personally support NATO under the condition that this military alliance's goal is not to provoke others and threaten unnecessary military intervention in other countries, and is simply there for security and self-defense purposes against a country like Russia. I personally believe that although NATO's actions are controversial, their presence is necessary to help protect other countries from Russian aggression that Ukraine is currently experiencing. I'm not saying Ukraine is 100% innocent, but they don't deserve what they're currently getting with Russia's illegal war and invasion of Ukraine.
Johnny "WetStart" McCain was not tortured in the Hanoi Hilton.
In the UK, we still want Tony Blair arrested for war crimes. I'm glad to see Code Pink holding US war criminals accountable. I wish more of your country would get behind them and other anti war activists.
Thanks ladies! The whitewashing of McCain has made me sick this week! UUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
His Admiral dad should have given him a boat and kept him at home.
Amy with the facts.
The tumour that killed him should be considered for the Nobel Peace prize
He brought the entertaining shit show Sarah palin to my attn. She is a gift that still keeps giving. I laugh uncontrollably on your final tab Sen. John McCain.
