  • In this video I describe step by step how to create your own custom li-ion battery cell for extended FPV flight times. You can use this battery in any number of application but in my case i'm using it to fly the flywoo explorer.
    Please be careful when making these as it can be dangerous. This is your responsibility to stay safe.

    If you absolutely insist on soldering (a powerbank style spot welder that can do 0.15mm thick pure nickel strips is ~$60) then you MUST have at least a 60W iron. Preferably 80W or 100W. Time on cell is crucial. You're tinning the cell twice, adding the nickel twice and then adding the leads (which should go on the nickel in between the cells when possible). If you spend more than 5 seconds on each per soldering event you're killing the cell. Less capacity, less cycles in lifespan, more likely to suffer catastrophic failure.
    This instructional is showing you how to bake the cells, the first solder joint to the first cell is 35 seconds. Start by tinning your iron tip. Heat transfers best that way. Add rosin flux to everything you are going to solder. Start by soldering a blob to each side of the cell. Then add a blob to each end of each nickel strip. Then start connecting the cells with nickel.
    Get a laser thermometer so you can check the temps. You want the case of the cell to be cooled down to 40 Celsius or less before you go at that cell again. You never want the case to exceed 160 Celsius or you're teetering on the interior of the cell heading towards thermal runaway.
    I would advise using an insulator ring on the positive side since the edge of the top is negative
    One more time: 5 SECONDS MAX PER JOINT. 3 SECONDS PREFERABLY. FLUX IS YOUR FRIEND

      You forgot to mention to make all the balance leads the same length, I also always use a spot welder and insulation boards on the ends , one with a hole in the center to run the power and balance leads out of , then heat shrink the battery

  • @strazfpv7043
    @strazfpv7043 3 года назад +8

    I would add to this method to pay special attention when soldering the strips to the positive side. Using too much heat on the strip, could melt through the insulation of the negative side, shorting the battery. I would punch a hole through the strips so the solder on the positive side flows through it and holds it in place, so the time spent with the iron on the battery is shorter. Also, sanding a bit the battery heads before applying solder will make it faster.

      I tried to show a way most people with general tools can do. As long as you don’t hold the solder too long it’s pretty good. Really a much bigger tip melts the solder faster and transfers less heat. A spot welder is ideal too. Your right though there could be some improvements to making them. Honestly a lot more goes into making nice liion packs. These will work for anyone looking to DIY though. Lol.

      I would honestly swap to 4s or 6s if you’re making 3s 2P the higher the voltage the lower the amp draw. So on 3s youll pull 20amps, on 4s you’ll pull 12-15 on 6s you’ll pull 5-10 as an example.

    Is it good idea to make 3s li-ion packs fro 4" like flywoo explorer??

    • @KAREKINFPV
      @KAREKINFPV  3 года назад

      I actually don't thin so because I think the min cell voltage would be too low to keep it flying. You'd need to get higher KV 3s motors at least. But the min cell voltage on a 3s liion is the max cell voltage of a 2s. I don't think a flywoo will fly on a 2s.

    • @VictorSeedorsky
      @VictorSeedorsky 3 года назад

      @@KAREKINFPV I was writing about flying it on 3s not 2s. I have chimera 4" with 3800kv and it flies all right on 3s LIPO packs with just 25C discharge rate. Hance if same done on 3s Li-ion- it could fly maybe even better and longer with significantly reduced weight - as 1cell less in a pack will make it lighter. Did you try? I was about to find out but just missing tools and decent 18650 cells to make a pack.

    • @KAREKINFPV
      @KAREKINFPV  3 года назад

      @@VictorSeedorsky yea your not understanding my point. Liion flys to a lower voltage per cell. 2.5v so I don’t think it would fly when a 3s was at a lower voltage. For example 3v per cell 3x3s = 9v I don’t think the lead would stay in the air at 9v let alone. 7.8v when the cells are 2.6v each.

    great video, but careful kids you need to be safe. soldering onto a battery is not ideal but you want to be really careful on the positive end that you dont breach the insulating material (green wrap) the casing underneath is negative and a solder ball might short it. Spot welding is much safer.

    Hi~
    Let me ask you a question.
    It's a 3 inch cine hoop.
    In the video, there are videos of making a pack with 4 lithium-ion 18650 batteries and flying it with an FPV long range.
    With excitement, I ordered batteries and made a pack.
    LGDBHG21865 3000mA.
    The problem is... When I hovered, the yaw tick symptom reappeared after it came up, and, after a few seconds, the low-voltage buzzer sounded and the aircraft sank.
    If I open it again, it opens again,,,,, repeat...
    So, I changed the low voltage warning in Beta Flight to 2.7V, and when I turned it on, there was no sound.
    If I take a break for a while, it will float again. But it sinks again... The battery is hot, and the voltage is 3.8V... TT
    I bought 40 tablets... but I can't use them all?
    How do people use? Batteries were also made by buying anything.
    Is my FC the problem? Or is there a special setting for Li-ion?
    FC is IFlight SucceX Mini F4 V3 Stack, and the manual says 2~6 Lipol. Do I have to use only Lipol? Can I change FC?
    Why is this happening?
    It's a waste of money/work time.
    I'm serious~~ Please advise.~~ TT

      I tried the same as you and faced the sad truth, I had jumping drone like a Kangaroo. Your batteries' continuous current rating is low, (approx 2A) , you need high current capable 18650s like Sony VTC5 or VTC6 18650s (15A continuous/30A max)
