The old ps1 spec ops games? I had two of them as a kid, I remember a few things:
Every button seemed to make my character plant a bomb that blows up in 3 seconds.
    Horrible controls.
The men in the helicopter grunt like cave men for some reason when you select them
    The time limits are cruel
There isn't any ammo pickups. Also if you reload with rounds in the mag, you lose those rounds permanently.
Your partner always immediately gets gunned down at the start because of bad spawn placements.
You die In two hits while enemies can take a rocket to the face and keep going

One saving grace of this series, or at least Covert Assault that me and my brother used to play, is 2-player split screen co-op mode. Even as kids we understand how janky the game was, and had our own fun by not taking it seriously. In the first mission, one objective is to storm an enemy mansion filled with guards. But instead of doing what the game expected, we just brought grenades as many as possible, then lobbing them blindly from safe place, listening to death cries of the guards until they're no more. They're stupid enough to stand still amidst all the explosion, not even trying to try attack our position. Fun times.

  • @CatsOverdrive

My fave for the "early 2000's tactical FPS games" were the Delta Force titles. Mostly, Land Warrior, Task Force Dagger, Black Hawk Down, and its expansion. My most fave feature for those games; comes with an easy-to-learn-and-use mission editor. Fun to sandbox scenarios or missions that I specifically want, no matter how silly it may become.

It's bizarre how the Spec Ops series would later lead to Spec Ops: The Line, which is quite honestly the best, most effective postmodern game ever made, bar none. The Line, unlike OTHER postmodern games that came out after, just gave you subtle hints that something isn't quite right, up until the seventh level where in you walk into the aftermath of a white phosphorous attack, and THEN the deconstruction begins and you understand what's going on.
Truly bizarre how this bad, budget tactical shooter would lead into a masterpiece that's in serious need of a remaster.

Ah fuck...I remember playing this game back when I was a kid. Funny enough, I got it cuz the CD cover it had during that time was a counter-strike picture (bootlegs/misleading CD covers were pretty common frm wher Im at back then). As a kid, I thought it was the real deal but as I boot it up, it said "Spec Ops" which again, I thought it was a different region title or some shit. So I played and I literally cant get past the first level cuz of the "invisible" enemies even in easy then I never touch it again. However, hearing those "grunts" sound effects and seeing those compressed jpgs of the guns really take me back lol. Thanks Br0leg for reminding me this vague memory of my childhood!

    • @Br0leg

A very common situation here as well. I once was sold a COD 2 PC disk that in a local game store when I was like 8 years old. Package claimed it’s original cod 2, but in reality it was just a shitty fan made map pack ( really bad) and the main game was completely absent. There were like 4-5 short maps in total.

im gonna be honest here. for its time, it really wasnt the worst thing ever. now, if we talking Spec Ops: The Line, i really feel that Spec Ops: The Line was really good. even on PC. im not sure how the multiplayer was because i only ever played the single player stuff, like the story mode and those challenges, solo. this game tho. today, yeah, its not good. however, comparing it to many other games of that time, its one of those that i think people should try, but they wont ever come back to it. oh, GOG has Spec Ops: The Line. that one is absolutely worth checking out, even today. even the entire soundtrack of Spec Ops: The Line was good, on top of a pretty good story....

    • @Br0leg
      @Br0leg  2 года назад +4

Spec Ops The Line really has absolutely nothing to do with this game, thats why I didnt mention the line at all, they kept switching developers and all the games in the series are completely unrelated xD. And I would disagree that this game wasnt the worst. I exclusively compared this game to other games of its era such as Syphon Filter that did a much better job.

Im surprised airborne commando wasn't tackled on this video, radically different and alot better compared to the first two. Right down to the perspective being top-down instead of third person.

@@Br0leg there is some really good map design and the weapons felt balanced and okay for PS2. kinda wish it got either a fan remaster mod or an official remake... even though it would get clouded over by the next call of duty game

Bruh I used to play this as a kid so much, wasn't sure what I was doing most of the time either! I remember I had a dream when I was younger, where I imagined being in the dead animation of spinning around my dead character laid out with some music or someth.
