- Misbun plays a very bizarre game against ironman Icuk.
First he plays a mistake prone game in set 1 presumably with the famous Stadium Negara wind behind him, At one time trailing 0-13.
He follows it with a furious 2nd game which he won and continued the same pace in the first half of the final game only to succumb
to exhaustion in the last half. Perhaps he is playing to the crowd, demanding him to play till he drops without a game plan and not playing to win.
Icuk is the same player who got a famous 15-0 thrashing by Frost in the 1987 All England Final.
Going by the playing style,strokes and fitness level of Misbun as a player it is difficult to see how Lee Chong Wei has taken after him,
perhaps mainly earlier in his career before Li Mao was roped in followed later with Rashid Sidek and Hendrawan. LCW is simply a concoction of himself and some of all his coaches’ inputs and experience.In fact LCW plays a lot more like Icuk but with some menacing smashes and deft netplay added in,probably modelled after some other famous players and is very much more efficient as a player and athlete and optimises his energy with economical strokes and movements.
The player that most resembles and influenced by Misbun's playing style has to be Hafiz Hashim .
Misbun Sidek probably helped Lee Chong Wai more as a trainer and coach rather than a role model or sifu.
on looking back it is not surprising that misbun lost the first game playing with the drift and hitting out of the opposite baseline. Icuk too suffered the same problem but he had more stamina overall in the tie.
Nowadays it is possible to understand the game better with pros as commentators giving technical input instead of the nonsense from non technical commentators.Playing in Istora Senayan Singapore,Japan,or Stadium Negara is atrocious with the drift and no air conditioning then.Even today players face the same problems and try to command the net and avoid lifting.

We have to admit that Misbun Sidek does not have a good track record when it comes to the Thomas Cup unlike his younger brother Rashid Sidek.
Misbun was the eldest of the Sidek siblings but did not fare too well his maiden Thomas Cup appearance in 1982 at London where Malaysia lost 5-4 to England.In fact he was handed the duck by Steve Baddeley.In the next Thomas Cup series held in Kuala Lumpur he again lost to Steve Baddeley.
In the next Thomas Cup held at Jakarta he fared a bit better and even beat Han Jian.
But in the 1988 Thomas Cup final against China he got only four points in the two sets defeat to Yang Yang.
In this semifinal with Indonesia he lost in three sets to Icuk Sugiarto.

The Indonesia coach Rudy Hartono had predicted a 4-1 win for Indonesia but in the end had to eat his words as the underdog Malaysia upset Hartono's country men 3-2 to advance to the Thomas Cup final.

By 85. Misbun was already a spent force and a joke. His one saving grace was this match. he actually did not want to play and told Elyas Omar he could could only last 1 set. and Fang also wished to leave him out. Elyas persuaded Misbun and Fang to let him play. Elyas told misbun to play his best and show his brothers. Rudy in his column in ST in the next day said that when Misbun gave Icuk a tough time in the 2nd set he knew it was going to be tough for Indonesia that night. and that Msia would fight them all the way. Fang said he couldnt do much for Misbun's fitness as he was past his prime. But he worked on Foo, Rashid , Cheah who later won the cup in 1992.
That should be an accurate account of what happened.Except that he did better here than the 15-5,15-2 thrashing by Icuk in the 1986 Thomas Cup.He won the Konica Cup and Taiwan Open in 1987 and even appeared in the semis in the 1987 GP Finals.The RTM commentator says that it was Mahathir who convinced Misbun to play.
Of course he was quite a character and star in Malaysian badminton but somewhat hampered by his anti-establishment ,anti-authority and rebellious personality and lack of discipline,reflected sometimes on court,in contrast to say Rashid .Even as a fairly respected coach he had delusions of doing an Arab Spring on the BAM.
Lee Chong Wei has time and again reminded players that to be successful,they need to conform to BAM and be disciplined and work hard.
he still has his demons with BAM. But when a young LCW was showing some rebelliousness, Misbun cold storaged him. LCW in his book said thats the time made him reflect of what he want to do with his badminton career and LCW conformed.

While waiting for it,it was a case of the game being played at a fast and furious pace with Icuk running out of steam first, as can be seen here.But he was faster to recover in the third.Its like running or cycling long distances,players have to plan when to use their last ounce of strength,not sprinting start to finish and dreaming of leading all the way.
Yes mynahbird, we would appreciate to see the full of the 2nd set. The other one I would request is the 2nd doubles btw Liem-Ertanto and Cheah-Ong particularly the set where both Liem and Ertanto fell to the floor trying to retrieve the shuttle. Cant remember which set that was.
