Estes Saturn V Launch

  • This is an Estes kit #2001. It is a 1/100 scale model of the iconic Saturn V launch vehicle. I've had this kit for over 30 years, but didn't have the confidence to build and launch it until now. Altogether this rocket took 5 weeks to build. The engine used was a D12-3. Shortly after apogee I rotated my phone camera 90 degrees to keep the two descending sections in view, so apologies that it's disorienting. The lower section has two parachutes, but only one opened. Fortunately the rocket was recovered with no damage. If you look carefully shortly after ejection you will see the last quarter moon sweep by. It isn't the greatest camera recording, but I hope you enjoy the video.

    Me and my best friend use to launch rockets some 50 years ago, Brian had an Apollo rocket and used the “E” engines, big 42” silk parachute. We launched from the school yard. It went so high we lost track of it, but saw it coming down pretty far away. The adventure continued picking up the launch pad and all the stuff, getting on our bikes and chasing down the rocket. Missed all the eucalyptus trees, houses and everything else, landed in a field. That was a good day!

    The only time I saw one of these models lift off a pad was at a rocket meet some 50+ years ago. It got maybe 10 feet off the ground then crashed in pieces before the chutes popped out. I think what happened was the [inexperienced] owner used wrong sized engines thinking it would be safer than sending it too high. OOPS! Good to see the Saturn V once again.

    Back in the early 90's, Estes had these with a conversion to run their E15 engines, which were way more spicy than the D's and with more guts than their current E9's. Launched one 5 or 6 times with those engines, and nearly lost sight of it each time.

    • @jameswilkinson259
      @jameswilkinson259  3 месяца назад

      I didn't know that there was conversion kit during that time. I modified my Saturn V so it can use both D12 or E12 engines,but I'm worried that the heavier E12 might cause instability. Someday I might try it.

    • @MrChugwater
      @MrChugwater 3 месяца назад

      @@jameswilkinson259: I would say the weight isn't going to get things too far out of balance. The E12 is just going to be a D12 with more fuel, so there's not going to be much change in thrust. The old E15's were beasts.
      The conversion was basically an option with the early 90's Saturn V kits. All there was to it was a longer engine hook, a different template to make your markings for the engine mount, and a small orange spacing plug if you wanted to run D engines instead of E's.

At that time it featured either a single D engine, or 4 B or C engines. What I remember most about the launch is that I failed to remove the starting key, which maintained a closed circuit. When I got back to the pad, all of the vinyl insulation on the wires had melted (the leads were touching)

      It's a large, heavy rocket that wasn't intended to go very high. When Estes produced this rocket kit there wasn't anything stronger than the 'D' engine at the time. I can understand why people think it underwhelming. Thanks for commenting.
