Did you get the Easter egg? When Maverick first meets Penny (Jennifer Connely) in the bar!! Music by David Bowie plays in the background, with whom she filmed Labyrinth when she was 16.
You are 100% wrong about the boat. 1) it is a racing J-125 (around $300K), 2) there is no "mechanism" to keep that boat heeling (aka "sideways") - boats heel due to wind pressure, specifically, when sailing close to the wind ("pointing") 3) they shot this scene several times, because Cruise wanted a lot of wind and a lot of heel. There is an interview with Jennifer, in which she explains how difficult it was to act and steer the boat at the same time. She prepared for it by balancing on a coffee table with her daughter throwing water on her while she recited her lines. BTW, I sail like that quite a lot.
That's crazy! Both that they sailed it and also that they didn't use a rig to tip it over, with how much time and money films cost to make you would have thought they'd make frame or something to keep it in the right place!
@@CinobiteReacts I think Tom wanted the authenticity. Being a sailor I found almost nothing wrong withy the sailing sequence. If they tipped that boat with light wind, EVERYBODY who has been on a sailboat at least a couple of times would know it was fake. That's my biggest complaint about a lot of movies - boats move too fast for the wind, sails luffing (flapping) and yet the boat is sailing right along, 6-7 wind changes during a sequence depicting (presumably) the same day. After a while it completely overwhelms anything the movie is trying to say. Other than Maverick, the only movies where sailing was the most authentic (and loved by sailors) were "Wind" with Matthew Modine and "Captain Ron," believe it or not.
@@bessarion1771 The only thing I wondered during the sailing sequence was how realistic it would be to fly the spinnaker on a boat that size with just two crew. Is that feasible?
There are two different F/A-18 models in the movie - The "E" model (single seat) and "F" model (two seats). The two-seater can seat the pilot and a Weapons Systems Officer (WSO - pronounced "Wizzoh").

I have watched a few reactions imploring Hangman to take off. That’s not really possible on a carrier. They have to launch you with the catapult, so it would take a lot of people making that decision.
Actually, he and at least one other jet should have already been airborne in the event of a problem causing one of the strike aircraft to abort. And why were Hangman and the others not used fir SEAD ? IT was a cool movie but the plan of attack was terrible.
Saw this in cinema 36 years after I saw the first in cinema. Both fantastic movies but this one is just awesome. Everyone in it was perfect for their roles.

@@dmytryblyzniuk8211 the only scene where Tom Cruise flies a plane is the one slow tracking shot of him and Jenefer fying a gental curve in the P-51 at the end of the movie. every other flight scene is wither VFX or a navy pilot flying with the actor in the back seat of a 2 seat Super Hornet. The Navy would NEVER alow a civilian to fly one of their aircraft. As far as the Admiral's ring... If I'm not mistaken -- and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am -- it's a class ring from Annapolis (The Naval Academy).
Well...the shock wave wasn't a special effect...the PLANE, itself, was a re-skin over an F-18 to turn it into the Darkstar. That plane couldn't be flown to capture the image in camera.
@@leslauner5062 the Chinese managed to get a shot of the 'plane' with a satellite...and LOST their damn minds !! The production 'people' had to shoot the scene indoors because of it.
He actually took that blast to the face from the aircraft going over his head IRL that was not faked in the studio in post production What they did do was superimpose the image of dark Star over an actual f-18 that Tom Cruise was riding in, in the back seat, in the naval flight officers position which is the naval equivalent of the Air Force weapons systems officer. If you look at the behind the scenes video on the production of top gun you will actually see that same scene shot from the perspective of the photography crew on the ground IRL, before the post-production work was done.

F-14 Tomcat was what was in the original Top Gun. The F-15 is an Air Force fighter jet, as is the F-16. Navy jets are different as they have to land on aircraft carriers versus solid ground (runway). The SR-71 "Blackbird" has another nickname. Wanna guess what it is? I think "Skunk Works" has an actual plane like the "Dark Star" in this movie. You can see their logo on the tail for a brief second.
Good call for spotting Last Dance by David Bowie when we see Jennifer Connelly for the first time. Bowie and her were in the movie Labyrinth. I think Labyrinth came out same year(1986) as Top Gun.
It's called Kvochur's bell, and while it's an impressive demonstration of the maneuving capabilities of 3D thrust vectoring, it's combat utility is questionable. (especially for a plane and combat doctrine that's doesn't take into account defense).

7:38 North Island is the island that encloses San Diego Bay. It is a Naval Air Station to house Navy fighter planes, as San Diego is pretty much a naval base.
a few corrections. 1) there in the Navy not the Air Force. 2) In the Navy a captain is an 0-6 not an 0-3 so the other pilots are called lieutenant. 3) Tom Cruise does fly planes but he doesn't get to fly F-18's they are actually in the back seat with real Navy pilots flying. He does fly the p-15 at the end. That is his actual plane.
Two mistakes in this film. 1.) the Top Gun school (aka. United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program) was never at Naval Air Station North Island. It moved directly from Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, CA (location in the original film) to Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada. & 2.) 24:58 The F/A-18E’s & F’s Super Hornets have software that will return it to level flight in the event of the pilot blacking out or otherwise becoming incapable of flying the jet. So, this scene would not happen unless the jet had taken actual damage. Such as the one that crashed from the “bird strike” in the following scene.
I saw the original the night it was released in 86’ when I was 17. It’s a sin to watch this without seeing the original first. I also saw this In The theater .
22:54 Because they want to avoid radiation exposure. They said that. I don't think Rooster ever blame Maverick for Goose's death. In the first movie, even Goose's wife didn't blamed him, so it doesn't make any sense he grew up blaming Mav.

The configuration Tom Cruise was in was a 2-seat plane filmed to appear like a 1-seater. The real Navy pilot sat in the front on the controls. Tom sat in back, but the camera was setup to look like a 1-seater. Real F-18s come in 1-seat and 2-seat setups so it wasn't a stretch to use a couple camera tricks.
A little late to the party here, but no Maverick's plane was the F14 Tomcat in the original. Love how they worked it into the film, even though none are flying anymore. Also just to clarify in case no one else has, the actors did NOT fly the planes themselves. They were in the back of F18F models and had Navy pilots doing the flying. The navy wouldn't let civilians actually fly, half the crap in that cockpit is still classified.
@@CinobiteReacts you heard right, but, they are having a REALLY hard time keeping them operational. The last I had heard, there were only 1 or 2 planes that were even flyable anymore. Naval officer rank (at least in the US) goes as follows; Ensign, Lieutenant Junior Grade, Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, and Captain. Anything above that is some grade of Admiral that I don't know. But Hondo is an interesting rank; Warrant Officer. It actually means that he was enlisted at one point and has some technical knowledge. Enlisted personnel CAN become officers by either graduating from Officer Candidate School (OCS) or, if they're young enough, get nominated (basically, they solicit a nomination) by someone in Congress to go to a service-run academy, like the Naval Academy (in Annapolis, Maryland...Marines can attend, as well), the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York (they just say that they went to West Point), or the Air Force Academy (includes Space Force). I think the Coast Guard has an academy as well, but they're not part of the Department of Defense; they're currently under the Department of Homeland Security (they were under the Department of Transportation)
Tom Cruise was NOT piloting the F/A-18, nor were any of the other actors. They were really in the jets, that's true, but they were in the back seat of an F/A-18F, with a Navy pilot in the front seat.

Mad props yo!!! FIRST PERSON to notice the Labyrinth connection!!!! Hell yes!!!
Thanks!
Connelly is in Labyrinth. Bowie is in Labyrinth. But Bowie's "Let's Dance" is not in Labyrinth. But there is a song named "Dance, Magic, Dance" that is.
Tomcats tske off full wings forward
11:31 for Navy officers, that rank is Lt. (O3 pay grade). Army Captain uses same symbol and is also O3. Navy Captain is equivalent of Army Colonel ("full bird").
Maybe the single greatest IMAX movie experience I've ever gone to. My Brother and I took my 73 year old mom since she's never seen IMAX. As soon at it was over...... my mom was already asking when she could go back. This sequel experimce ranks very high..... right up there with Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Easily the best theater experience I've personally had in about a decade!
This movie to me cements Tom Cruise as the best actor ever!
I have watched a few reactions imploring Hangman to take off. That’s not really possible on a carrier. They have to launch you with the catapult, so it would take a lot of people making that decision.
A valid point - I think people just get really pumped wanting him to go and save them :)
Love how they brought back the inverted move. Plane at the end: It’s a P-51 Mustang owned by Tom. WW2 plane. Also you asked an Air Force question: Top Gun is part of the Naval Air Force and not the USAF. Glad you liked the film! A true masterpiece
One of the vary rare good sequel/reboots
The roof wasn’t ment to lift but they left it in as it looked cool
Funny you mentioned the theme as an alarm clock. I have used the Top Gun theme for the last year as my alarm clock and ringtone. Love waking up every morning to it!
Those are lieutenant bars. In the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps those are captains bars
I absolutely loved this film. Quite possibly the best sequel ever made! They wrote it in a way where you could feel the dialog coming in your head! It hits all the great nostalgic moments! Great emotional moments! They somehow managed to write a script where we realistically had a scene with Maverick and Rooster together in an F-14 with Goose's saying "Come on Mav'! Do some of that pilot shit!" Incredible!
Great reaction!!! First time to your channel! Happy to have found it ! Easy sub!!!
Thanks for the sub! Don't be put off by the older videos, even I think they're boring 🤣
Tom Cruise is not flying the jet. He’s in the backseat.
He is real pilot his father was military pilot
@@dmytryblyzniuk8211 the only scene where Tom Cruise flies a plane is the one slow tracking shot of him and Jenefer fying a gental curve in the P-51 at the end of the movie. every other flight scene is wither VFX or a navy pilot flying with the actor in the back seat of a 2 seat Super Hornet. The Navy would NEVER alow a civilian to fly one of their aircraft. (Infact they told Cruise that if he touched the flight stick during any of the flights that he was done, would not be allowed back in the air, and the rest of the filming would have to be done on the ground)
@@mr.brainsgames116 absolutely not. He flies his own P51 at the end of the movie but he is not piloting an F18
Good point, I should have been a bit clearer, obviously the actors are all in the planes, although Tom Cruise does fly and there is a video of him flying an L-39 jet, but I imagine acting and flying at the same time would be pretty hard!
@@mr.brainsgames116 no he’s not and you need to watch behind the scenes. The navy would never allow a civilian to fly a F18. He’s sitting back seat pretending to fly
this is the Navy, not the air force. and yes, the military has way more briefings than are needed....usually in a classroom, but in this case it makes sense.
they used a blue angel to do the flyby. ed harris really did stand there and take the shock. It was enough to also move the vehicle.
The Navy wouldn't allow Tom Cruise to fly the jet. He is in the back seat with a real pilot in the front seat flying the plane. :)
After seeing this movie, I want Days of Thunder 2: Return of Dick Trickle in the works
Worst character name ever... it's like precum... or gonorrhea. lol
Dick Trickle was a real name. Former NASCAR driver.
The scene near the beginning where the test plane flies over Ed Harris and lifts the roof was a real shot (So as impossible as it may have seemed, it was NOT a special effect)!
Big surface, short screws susceptible to peak push force and wind stream with certain direction can easily make that happen.
@@leslauner5062 the Chinese managed to get a shot of the 'plane' with a satellite...and LOST their damn minds !! The production 'people' had to shoot the scene indoors because of it.
It's called The Top Gun national anthem: and I want that playing if and when I ever die and head to heaven
Actually the song is named “Top Gun Anthem” there is no “national” in the song’s title.
Myles actually learned to play the piano and that song for the movie..
He actually took that blast to the face from the aircraft going over his head IRL that was not faked in the studio in post production
What they did do was superimpose the image of dark Star over an actual f-18 that Tom Cruise was riding in, in the back seat, in the naval flight officers position which is the naval equivalent of the Air Force weapons systems officer. If you look at the behind the scenes video on the production of top gun you will actually see that same scene shot from the perspective of the photography crew on the ground IRL, before the post-production work was done.
This was the only time I've seen a video that not only matches but even eclipses the original
Dude, I've literally watched dozens of reactions for this movie, and literally, you are the ONLY one who's caught the David Bowie track playing when Penny's character is introduced. Very cool. I do hate to be that girl to correct you, but this song wasn't in the Laberynth, but it was David Bowie in the film. Kudos, my guy, you win all the cool points.
Thanks :) Normally people hate that I keep noticing things and talking about details lol
Best time I've had at the theater, I went to Regals cinemas 4DX and Jesus christ what a ride!!!!...seats almost did barrel rolls!!!...wish more movies were like this...
Yeah turns out that Dark Star in this film is basically an SR-72, the replacement for the 71!
Good call for spotting Last Dance by David Bowie when we see Jennifer Connelly for the first time. Bowie and her were in the movie Labyrinth. I think Labyrinth came out same year(1986) as Top Gun.
38:15 Was The su 57 doing a thrust vector
the thrust vector at 38:15 was
performed in 2012 by a sukhoi 35
It's called Kvochur's bell, and while it's an impressive demonstration of the maneuving capabilities of 3D thrust vectoring, it's combat utility is questionable. (especially for a plane and combat doctrine that's doesn't take into account defense).

💯
he's not flying the hornet he's in the back seat
they are riding, not flying. the pilot for all the fighters is a former blue angel aviator, Tom Cruise is a pilot but the Navy would absolutely not let any of the actors touch the flight controls
if you have a chance to see it in cinema, do. I have seen it only 4 times and would have more, but they are not playing it anymore at my theatre.
You have to watch "the making of" this film. So much practical in this.
Penny was only mentioned after the open action scene in the 1st movie after the fly by and him and goose are getting the debriefed by the ships captain
Meg Ryan mentions Penny Benjamin too in TG1
7:38 North Island is the island that encloses San Diego Bay. It is a Naval Air Station to house Navy fighter planes, as San Diego is pretty much a naval base.
no academy award… but movie of the year. FUCK YEAH!!! Awesome sequel.. just pure emotion action and the right amount of comedy slipped in … 💯
a few corrections.
26:39 it is called the “Missing Man formation”
Two mistakes in this film.
1.) the Top Gun school (aka. United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program) was never at Naval Air Station North Island. It moved directly from Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, CA (location in the original film) to Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada.
&
2.) 24:58 The F/A-18E’s & F’s Super Hornets have software that will return it to level flight in the event of the pilot blacking out or otherwise becoming incapable of flying the jet. So, this scene would not happen unless the jet had taken actual damage. Such as the one that crashed from the “bird strike” in the following scene.
She was the Admirals daughter mentioned .. nice touch in this sequel
I don’t think Cyclone (John Hamm) doesn’t care about the pilots coming home. I just think he doesn’t think it’s possible at this point.
I saw the original the night it was released in 86’ when I was 17. It’s a sin to watch this without seeing the original first. I also saw this In The theater .
22:54 Because they want to avoid radiation exposure. They said that.
I don't think Rooster ever blame Maverick for Goose's death. In the first movie, even Goose's wife didn't blamed him, so it doesn't make any sense he grew up blaming Mav.
hrrmm I guess for the film, but it usually doesn't work that way. But if they said it in the film I'm happy :D
@@CinobiteReacts I don't remember who said it, it either Warlock or Cyclone, but they said it when they moving the date of the mission. The exact words was, 'as a result, your mission has been moved up one week in order to avoid contaminating the target valley with radiation.'
Enjoyed your reaction, but the actors (including Tom Cruise) were not flying the fighter jets.
I recently read that the last of the F14's are being used by the Iranian air force!
@@CinobiteReacts you heard right, but, they are having a REALLY hard time keeping them operational. The last I had heard, there were only 1 or 2 planes that were even flyable anymore. I don't count the Iranians in the statement above as even though they theoretically have them, they generally don't do much with them. My appologies for not being more clear on that.
@@gordo1701e The Iranians are having to scavenge parts from their non operational F-14’s to keep the flying F-14’s in the air. There is specifically a law that prevents any F-14 specific replacement parts from being shipped or even sold to Iran.
@@jamesmarciel5237 You are certainly correct on that. I watched an investigative report regarding a smuggling ring that got busted for doing specifically that as a matter of fact.
All the pilot actors sit in the rear seats of a real F-18s and direct themselves in those scenes. Watch the "behind the scenes" on RUclips for this and more... :)

7:36 ... Paris Island is the east coast training depot for Marine recruits. The Marines also have a training depot in San Diego (California), and Marines have kind of a rivalry over which is more 'hardcore'.
...Or is it 'hard-CORPS' ? 😉
11:20 ... this actor's name is Lewis Pullman, Bill Pullman's son (think 'Independance Day').
11:31 ... if they were in just about any branch except for the Navy, they would be Captain's bars. The rank Maverick wears is what a Navy Captain wears.
"Mav, do some of that pilot shit." Goose to Mav, Top Gun, in dogfight against Jester.
Some F-18's have two seats and others have only one.

Oh I watched that, I couldn't do that lol
Good question. Why not F35s? Probably because F18s are faster & have more payload. They can get in & get out quicker. With more. Oh, by the way, F14s are even faster & can bring an even bigger payload. We gave up so much 25 years back.
Good reaction. BTW the F-14 Tomcat still looks better than any modern jets and if it got the updates the others got it would have been far better too.

@@CinobiteReacts You have a point in terms of 5th generation. The F-22 and F35 are some gorgeous planes. But if we are talking about the 4th generation, the F-15, F-16 and F-18 have nothing on the Tomcat :D
This would have been flown with a 35 but the 35 doesn’t have 2 seats so it wouldn’t work for the movie. The excuse about why the 18 was needed is not correct.
I heard that they wouldn't let the film production company have any 35's because they didn't trust them with such expensive planes :P
@@CinobiteReacts
Well there's one in the intro. But no, it's just because they wanted a two-seat aircraft and Fat Amy is a single-seater. Plus she isn't as cool as the Hornet.
30:35 They are all in F/A-18's because it was the only dual-seater that would allow actors to be carried in the back. Whenever you see an actor they are in an F/A-18F. They were going to do the movies in the F-35's but the aircraft doesn't have 2 seats. Sorry but, no, these actors aren't actually flying these planes. In fact, there are only a handful of pilots in the world that could handle the courses they do in this movie. While Tom Cruise is a pilot and does actually fly this own P-51 at the end of the movie.. he's not flying low-level canyon runs that only a few people in the world are capable of doing.
I can see why they wouldn't let the production have a load of 35's lol
