Hey everyone, this is another video in the style of the one before the 30k announcement. It still feels very experimental, so I'll try to adjust by feel to see how to progress with these videos moving forward, so for the time being, よろしくお願いします!
I like this style a lot more, mostly because we got so many new videos from the GOAT, I don't care if they're "lower quality", keep up the great work, and 30 new cards a day is insane btw 🤯
Yeah I’m loving this type of video. It’s very relatable and fun, and lets us hear you just speak about anything that we might not otherwise have the opportunity to hear.
You're killing it with uploads lately dude! I don't think you've ever uploaded another video before I'd even had a chance to watch the first one (until now).
While sentence mining it really sometimes feels like ill never ever get enough vocabulary, I trust it's just part of the process but truly feels unending sometimes
My personal take is that at one point you can just decide when to stop. In the past, I imagined that number to be 10,000 for myself, until it became 20k, and now 30k. Obviously, there still will be words I won't know even at 30k, but at some point you just have to decide when to graduate.
@Livakivi I have a personal goal of reading some specific books (like Haruki Murakami) so until I can read it is probably where I will go on for, on an active level that is
You don't to know everything. It's okay to not sentence mining every word. Even sometimes anime use some weirds word that you don't need to know like "拙者", "天下無敵"。(These word are only use in samurai mangas but no in real life)
I really like this new format, to me it's nice hearing you go on random tangents and express your thoughts on topics that you usually wouldn't on the big edited videos and more Livakivi videos is always good!
Tomorrow will be the my one year on the Core 2k/6k deck. At first it was indeed pretty jarring to see how much i needed to learn, but once I stopped focusing on "I need to be able to y in x month" learning Japanese became a part of my daily routine with no stress. Seeing every few month the small improvements I've made were enough to keep me going ! Thank you, your video were the sole reason I retried the language learning adventure and I think that's a common sentiment, but I wish I had discovered your channel earlier ( well at least I've discovered it and that's what matter !)
I just want to say that I love your stuff. I've been following you for a while and your videos not only gave me practical tips, but most importantly they gave me so much inspiration. Thank you so much. Love
I really enjoyed this video, and if you're saying that making them in this style is easier for you production-wise then I'd love to see more like this. Still good to have a few of the larger projects per year, but you could make this type of video your bread and butter and your channel would still be great.
ive second guessed myself three times already between learning chinese and japanese and i literally cant choose but your videos make me more engaged in japanese but im actually so conflicted
Love this new style of short form content. I would also love to see more videos related to language learning in general. I'm not interested in learning Japanese, I'm learning German at the moment, but I like your videos anyway. Keep up the great work!
bro I'm riding the wave with you, I just bumped up my daily new cards from 18 to 30 lmao. I will visit japan in around june and I want to be prepared as much as possible LFG
I've been doing a much more modest 8 cards a day for a couple months after years of minimal card adding. It's amazing how much more new words stick with Anki. It's doesn't take much time either since any episode of anime likely has 30+ good new words. It is rather amusing when it takes less than a minute to get to 8 words. Complex anime speeches are ripe for new words.
Knowing how long its going to take can be a bit overwhelming but it can also be motivating. If you dont know where it ends, it can feel almost endless. Like I'm going to do this for the rest of my life and never reach my goal. But with Anki I can just calculate how many days its going to take me and seeing the end made me more confident to start learning in the first place.
I never get away with not mining uncommon words, every time I try as an experiment I get Baader-Meinhofed within like 3 days. Big ups on the shorter videos too :)
Actually, maybe subconsciously its easier to watch those, rather than the long videos. I subscribed a long time ago, but only now I actually watch your videos, but maybe its more related to changes I introduced to myself lately.
Liva it feels like you have had some fun with these last videos and they have super enjoyable to watch! The creative (and often time consuming) edits don't go unnoticed! I hope you keep having fun with it! Side note: Did you have any advice on how you packed your computer back from Japan? I'm super curious how you worked that all out. Keep making great stuff Livakivi
I love watching Livakivi cause he does everything I tell myself to do but don't. I'm doing a Japanese module at uni rn so I should probably get to doing mining lol, along with actually doing my work 😅
8:05 holy shit as kind of a beginner in Japanese with only Kaishi 1.5k completed and about 700 words mined on top of that, I have already mined this expression from an anime lol
Glad to see more videos from you-I just hope we get both styles. Love all your old videos. Also! Any chance doing the one-click mining is possible with other TLs? 😬
With English as my first language, I still even mine words from books in English as I happen to read a lot and still find immense value. My main goal is to read Japanese books, so I can see myself mining easily into the 60k range.
I hadn't properly sentenced mined for Japanese in years. I usually watch anime without subs and I know I don't understand every word but I thought I was doing pretty well. I got Migaku mostly to help with my Korean and tried sentence mining a Japanese anime. My face looked a lot like your dog's face too lol. It's interesting how your brain can adapt to not understanding every word.
Serious: You should unironically mine the 2016 Japanese translation of the bible. It has the absolute best mixture of new and older (but still in circulation) words, phrases and idioms. In terms of word density and relevance. Nothing beats it. By comparison obscure/academic texts are a waste of time. You can likely get thousands of words from the bible that you still don't know. It's a goldmine and easy to import a digital version with Migaku.
What's your daily job? Is it remote work in tech? I would guess it's software engineering given your video on how you set up your Macbook but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something else either. Edit: Saw your 2021 QnA. Funny how most Japanese learners I found have a programming background. I wonder why that is. Maybe we think alike and gravitate to the same learning patterns. LLMs ironically make make the intermediate stage of learning a language feel both pointless and motivating. Pointless in that it's already capable of translating all the phrases you don't understand instantly. And motivating because it makes the process of finding answers so much easier. Just then I was trying to figure out what 溜飲を下げる means using JMDict and how that was derived from 溜飲. LLMs answered that with class. Same with 下馬評
I recently showed the Migaku setup here: ruclips.net/video/2xFe_juNmfk/видео.html As for the tracking, I assume you mean toggltrack, but I personally no longer do tracking.
I notice your time per card is around 5-6s. Seems relatively fast (maybe I'm just slow). Do you genuinely just come up with the word in your head that fast everytime or do you forcefully try to guess it quickly even if the risk of not getting it right is bigger? You are a huge inspiration man, keep going!
There are a lot of mature cards in my reviews, including very basic words sometimes, which I can rep extremely quick, I often just double tap Reveal > Good because I know the answer will be 100% correct.
Hey livakivi, I just went through your Japanese guide and I’m interested in learning although it wasn’t really clear how basic sentences like greetings get covered through a random deck on anki + grammar rules. Any tips?
Awesome video! How are you getting Yu Yu Hakusho in Migaku with Japanese subs? Netflix with a VPN to Japan? Or do they just have the Japanese subs in Europe? They only provide English subs in the US.
Hi, I know I'm not a Patreon at the moment so it's okay if you can't answer this question, I get it, you can't answer everybody's question after all. You can even use it in the Q&A video in case it gets many likes. So, my question is: what do you do (and what did you use to do when you were first starting out if that changed over time) when you're learning the new words for the day? I mean, what do you do to actually memorize the content of a card, be it either from a pre made deck or a card you've mined yourself. Thank you anyway, Have a great day ;D
I'm really curious, How do you deal with mining that what you can reasonable review in the same day? I take 20 cards per day, but I can mine 50-100 cards in 1 hour because I'm relatively new to mining, and I end up having a huge backlog of cards that I can't reasonable mine and learn on the same day
I'd honestly recommend not stacking up too many cards into a backlog, moving one day at a time is the best as you always review the words when they're fresh. Might be better to just get your 20 ish cards mined and then immerse without mining afterwards.
@@Livakivi Thank you for the tip. I'll try to implement your suggestion to immerse without mining after the 20. because it is a little overwhelming to be behind on upcoming cards.

Hey don’t listen toooooo much to feedback but when you feel it’s fun and the best you’ll embed that spark in it 👍👍 try it out maybe it sucks maybe not
3 Livakivi videos in around a week!?
Can’t get much better than this
We eating good!

Livakiki just dropped a new banger

Definitely much faster to get a video out with this format lol
Love this style of videos too
I love these style videos, even more so if they are mixed with the normal ones

NEW LIVAKIVI CONTENT WOOOOOO
Let's go, Liva! Let's goooo!

30 new words a day is insane cause I'm doing 5 a day and it takes me 30+ minutes and I'm heavily struggling with mixing up kanji in my head.
It used to be the same for me when I got started, ~6 a day took 60 mins on average.

About language learning and what you say in the video...
Or any progress, really...
「塵も積もれば山となる。」
Or so I've heard.
I learned that expression from a YT video in 2023 😎

How do you get the new Migaku to work with anki and chrome? Also, what is the app you used (shown in other videos) to track your immersion progress?

As for the tracking, I assume you mean toggltrack, but I personally no longer do tracking.
How do you get the subtitles to the right of the video next to it? I've got Migaku but I haven't seen that option yet
Hit G for the side menu, or toggle it from view options
