I mean it also is Ubisoft a company that hasn’t made a genuinely good game in a very long time. I mean if it’s good that’s great but the assassins creed franchise is a former shell of what it was the last one I like was Odyssey and it wasn’t because of the gameplay. The last one I like for gameplay was unity because the innovation with crowd size,multiplayer, and parkour. But they completely got rid of all that.

Not even just the in-game design that would be copyrighted because it's Zoro's sword, they are buying Sandai Kitetsu swords on Amazon and marketing and reselling them as Assassin's Creed Merchandise for the new game.
Plus all the 'facts' of Yasuke come from Assoicate Proffesor Thomas Lockley (of a university in Tokyo) and he had edited the Wiki just to promote his book about the legendary Black Samurai (His source? "Its a true story, trust me bro").
He had gotten kicked from where he worked and Japan is investigating him because he promoted his book as fiction in Japan, but is stating it as Fact in the West.
He deleted all his social media, and is getting called out by Japanese historians.
He knows basically nothing about the time period, and the game devs don't know anything about Japan either based on how they are farming rice while having Sakura Blossoms at the same time. And that's just from what we've seen, the game isn't even out yet.
He's an academic fraud, who has been spreading misinformation and straight up lying for the last ten years.

Yeah can't really make much more about it when the edited wiki was already mentioned, plus a death note skit just about Ubisoft backwalking on the revisionism doesn't seem particularly entertaining or easy to make dialogue for that plot.

@@magnumdopest9161 Just speculation, but he'll probably play (and factor into the story) a lot more like Eivor did where they are more Assassin-affiliated than actual assassins and thus are a lot more oriented towards direct combat. As far as overall, it seems possible it will be very similar to Syndicate where Jacob Frye was better at open combat and Evie Frye was better at stealth, and you could switch between the two, but with Yasuke and Naoe instead of the Fryes.

@@Indigo_1001 You're wrong. Being a samurai was a hereditary title. It always has been. Yasuke was an African born outside of Japan to African parents in Africa. It's literally impossible for him to be a samurai because it's literally impossible for him to ever be a descendant of a samurai.
I can only find one instance of him being in battle, and he fought until a retainer of the enemy came to him and asked him to give up his sword. This was after fighting for some time, if you believe the written account of that day.

Yeah that was the issue I had with it. I understand the logic they took to get there, but it is certainly odd for them to use a real person as the protagonist.
From what I understand, they wanted to tell a story of people in Japanese society who had been excluded then basically becoming empowered by operating in the shadows. While Yasuke is *technically* a real person, almost nothing is known about him as a fact, and I guess they figured it would be too coincidental to have Yasuke at the same time as a black protagonist, but figured it would be problematic to ignore Yasuke, so they just made Yasuke the protagonist. And figured it was fine since all modern historians can say for sure is that he was black, lived in Japan, and worked for Nobunaga.
Personally, I think they would've been fine with just Naoe, *especially* since the last two games where they tried to have a female protagonist (Odyssey and Valhalla with Kassandra and Eivor Varinsdottir) were both forced to have a male option by Ubisoft execs - who have since been removed, so they aren't really an issue. Plus it solves the gameplay issue of having another non-stealth-oriented character in what is at least theoretically a stealth franchise. But it seems like using Yasuke was needed for the story they wanted to tell, so here's hoping they don't mess it up.
Real life but so little documentation it gives the writers free rein to play with the premise of an outsider to Japanese culture as an assassin.

I think a lot of people are missing the point that the Ubisoft writers probably wanted to play with the idea of an outsider adjusting to Japanese culture alongside a native as part of the narrative in the story. Yasuke fits the bill perfectly as a precedented but poorly defined historical figure that lets the writers do whatever they want with the assassins story while also not completely breaking history. Since it’s a dual-protagonist game it makes sense to create as much contrast between the two as possible so you get more interesting character interations
Did people throw this same fit with the Indian guy in AC Syndicate?
If that's what they were aiming for they should have made William Adams the protagonist; Yasuke isn't even a samurai. It's obvious what Ubisoft's real goal was.

I actually didn't know there was an African samurai serving under Oda Nobunaga himself. That's actually kind of cool. I always thought that the Black Samurai trope was just an interesting modern invention (Afro Samurai was an example I think? Haven't seen it, but also Da Samurai from Samurai Jack comes to mind). Being a warrior during the Sengoku period especially would have been quite difficult, let alone for someone foreign-born. The only major non-Asian visitors from the period to my knowledge were the Jesuit missionaries from Portugal, let alone any other country (especially during the Edo period where no-one was allowed into the country, period). For an outside man to become a retainer for one of the most well known Daimyo in Japanese history seems kind of significant.
I’m not an expert, but I doubt that the black samurai trope stems from Yasuke. Anime, martial arts, and similar stuff has been a part of the black community for years; just look at the Wu-Tang Clan, The Boondocks, King Geedorah, or even how Piccolo from Dragonball has been widely accepted as black. Japanese and adjacent cultures have been a prominent part of the black community for quite some time now, so it wouldn’t exactly be far-fetched to think that black people would start depicting themselves as samurai’s eventually. So, in media, I would imagine that it is a modern invention but it still is interesting to know that a real black samurai did actually exist at one point.

@Schnoz42069 What do you mean? Oda Nobunaga reportedly made him a retainer and even gave him his short sword. He was apparently a warrior too serving as a bodyguard before even setting foot in Japan. Are there some other sources that say he wasn't?
@@TayoEXE Everything you just said is true, but it doesn't change the fact that he literally was not a samurai. To be a samurai is to be a member of a specific social caste. Yasuke was not part of that social caste and therefore wasn't a samurai.
