If he did know he would walk out of this alive, he intentionally messed up his guess with five to prove there’s “real” danger of him messing up, then he stalled on the next one to let the silence build tension for him. How quickly he fired the next two shots is interesting because the viewer barely has any time to recognize “wait, that was empty. That means the next one is the bullet” and feel that sense of relief before he fires it. Then with the bang of the gun all the emotion comes flooding in, and his performance showing his relief really sells it.
The guy in the back really thought he was about to die, though.

The setup around this trick was absolutely masterful. It builds so much tension and suspends our disbelief, because if you just only watch the part where he shoots the gun you can instantly tell that it is fake. A real revolver shot would be incredibly loud, this sounded like a cap gun. And also the big giveaway is that there was no recoil. Shooting a revolver with one hand would have sent his arm flying up at least a little bit no matter how hard you try to control it. And thats exactly why the setup was so important! Because in the moment, you don't notice nor care about any of the things that are obviously fake.

you should watch more shooting videos on youtube and stop assuming everything will sound like it does in movies- where specialized microphones are used to capture the sound. your phone would have done a similar job catching the audio from a gun. this doesn't go anywhere for or against it being a blank, i'm just saying you can't assume based on the audio. recording close up gunshots accurately and not having them just sound like a pop is actually really hard.

American actor Jon-Erik Hexum got his big break in 1984, starring in his own network TV show, the spy adventure Cover Up. On a delay on set Hexum unloaded all but one of the blanks from his revolver and--as a sort of joke about the unpleasantness of the interminable pause--played Russian Roulette with it. He lost. Blanks are only safe at a distance where the gases have room to dissipate; pushed up tight against his skull, they pressed a disk of it into his brain and killed him. Remembering what tornadoes can do to brick walls might have helped him. Hexum's death resulted in changes to protocols on set; you don't leave live weapons for actors to play with between takes anymore. But his, along with Brandon Lee's, seem from a quick Google search to have been brought up a lot by the press after the recent Rust incident.

Had a friend who had a kid with a guy who decided to play Russian Roulette a for fun with his friend.
Needless to say, everyone in his apartment building heard a sudden shot at 2am from within the building.
Next day a friend who lived in the building told me he heard a gunshot inside and it woke him up terrified. Found out the next day Player 1 of 2 was found dead, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Stupid and senseless death. I went to visit the friend who’s BF did this, and her distress was palpable. But the child- she knew nothing. And she kept coming up to me calling me daddy (seemed like he was never around much) seeking attention. You could tell they had little to no support. Was a horribly sad situation.

Darren's really good at distracting people with irrelevant information - his tricks are generally quite basic and almost seem like cheating but that's kind of the idea... the real trick is to make people believe there's a complex explanation when in fact it's laughably simple and dishonest, which is the true essence of trickery 😆- always helps to remember the most basic rules of magic - there is never any real danger, and no good magic performance is capable of failure - ie no room for chance to impact the intended results. You can be 100% certain there is no round in the revolver (edit: to be clear - this means no blanks either) because that would be insane, so just think about what has to be the case to explain everything else and it's not that hard to figure out.... provided you have some familiarity with video composition and what's possible with some fixed camera angles.

I actually DO know of a case where a blank killed someone, I don't remember it exactly but it was on an episode of '1000 ways to die' in which a jackass father decided to "prank" his daughter and her boyfriend by loading his revolver with blanks and then barging into her room and "shooting" her boyfriend, he laughed at them and went "they're blanks!! hahahaha see? they can't hurt you" then put it to his temple to prove a point only to kill himself because blanks still contain gunpowder and cause a gun to recoil.
essentially what happens when a blank is shot as point blank as it gets right up against someones skull is exactly what a bullet would do just lacking the entry wound, it caused the area around where the barrel was placed to completely fracture and break his skull and it also resulted in obviously his brain being severely damaged and either almost instantly or outright instantly killed him, blanks are not safe at all
regardless of if a real .357 or a blank cartridge was used in the stunt had the round been placed in any chamber other than 1 or 5 and presuming nothing was truly rehearsed and everything was pure chance then he would've been dead moments after pulling that trigger

@@venomshot2815the point was that he would point it at his head if he thought it was empty and away when he thought he guess the bullet right
He thought it was the 4th so he aimed it away expecting it to fire but he was wrong, leaving him with a 50/50 remaining guess (the excitement of the stunt is that he is still in danger). So he was trying to figure out if it was in the last or the 2nd last, he figured it was the last so he pointed the first at himself and the one that now ofc had the bullet away and fired and he was correct (doing it quickly, because it's a guess and could be the other way round and got him killed). You're right that if he pointed the first away he would know (and then he obv wouldn't shoot himself after, realistically, -tho russian roulette does imply he would), but that would mean that he was entirely wrong and the stunt failed. He needed to guess, correctly
The only reason he pointed at the sack and nothing happened the earlier time was that he messed up (supposedly). Making it more exciting because you think wait he was wrong already now what's he gonna do he could mess up and die
Yeah I guess the idea is that he would have to shoot himself with the bullet, maybe. That is a kinda dumb idea. Clearly he was committed to guessing it right tho so what you say isn't something he would do (if it wasn't a hoax)

Derren tells people that he's doing a trick and people still believe him... The thing is that's the whole "reverse psychology" trick. Unless you believe it, you can safely assume that the people on screen are _acting_ like they believe it. That's the whole point of his show. It's not the magic, it's the "dumb" people believing the magic is real.

We all know it's fake and he'll be okay afterwards, that's why he put in the point and click part to make us think this is where the fuck up will happen. Even long time fans would be worried even if only for a moment after seeing him do that.

British reality TV can be so much better than American reality TV cause everything is far more subtle and subdued. If that were from the US and it came down to the final moments, we would hear strings and percussion blasting all over the soundtrack, and the conclusion would be drawn out for 5 unnecessary minutes.

That blank cartridge was probably filled with substantially less gunpowder than what was shown when he fired on a bottle.
Worst case scenario: he wouldve ruptured his eardrum and singed a bit of his hair.

This is one of the reasons I really like Penn and Teller, is because when they open their shows and do "seemingly" dangerous stuff, they make it very clear that they're bullshitters and they're never in any real danger because they don't want anyone replicating it and the entertainment should be in trying to figure it out, not getting off on "this person might die".

I was going to say this. Penn and Teller actually have a huge set of ethical objections to acts like this. IIRC, Penn’s take is 1. if you’re lying to people about the danger, it gives people the wrong idea about what you’re doing, and 2. if you actually are putting yourself in danger, that’s just unethical on its face.

Channel 4 gave him the scope to do this sort of thing, and him and his team could be trusted to do it responsibly and to be honest about it. He was a great antidote to all the David Blaine nonsense that was also popular at the time, whilst still providing the showmanship and craft that's needed to do this sort of thing well.

Aside from the generally ludicrous premises of his tricks there’s an absurd contrast between his pop-psych doofiness and the gravitas he invests in his shows. This special was so tense because you get the impression as a viewer that he really might kill himself out of incompetence.

It takes many years of study and a decent level of experience but you’d be surprised how easy it is to predict what people with certain personality traits are going to do or how they will react. When I first saw Derren Brown I thought what he did (that was just the early stuff) was amazing. But it’s really easy when you know. People in general are THAT easy to manipulate and predict. And the more a person denies they are, the higher the likelihood they are that person by the way. We all are too a point. Governments have the art of doing it em masse otherwise to this day they probably wouldn’t exist. A few people usually are telling us how to think, making us fear going against them etc and making sure we don’t all band together etc. Most people might not like a government but they’re happy to go along with it anyway. Derren is excellent at what he does, but when you learn how simple it really is once you know, it is even more astounding.
Oh and I’m talking about the selection process and tricks he plays on his audiences etc, not the Russian roulette part. Probably important to point out, that is a trick nobody should ever think they’re competent to do. A masters in psychology won’t get you there, so don’t try.

Can you recommend any good books to start with?

    • @Toxic-Ology
      @Toxic-Ology Год назад +2

@@punani_slayer4209 before I say anything, your username did a bit of a Derren Brown mind trick. My first sentence was going to be - It depends how deep you want to go, and then I remembered that I had read your username before writing that. So that’s an example for free. 😂 I could have thought to say It depends how advanced you want the books to be, but for some reason I chose that particular sentence.
It’s difficult to recommend books because learning kind of happens in stages and you’ve rightly said you want a book to get you started. So I’m actually going to recommend a Derren Brown book to get started with - Tricks of the Mind.
He explains how things work in a pretty good way and gives you a few working examples you can use to get started so you can see it does work. He also explains some of the psychology behind it in a bit more detail than he does on TV. So you can put things to the test and it will build your confidence that these things do work.
Then look into some of the psychology books he mentions and even Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, because that teaches a healthy way of thinking that many people don’t think like, it will teach you a baseline of rationality then look into personality disorders, and how we are all a bit narcissistic because it is essentially what gives us the confidence to get out of bed and go to work etc (a lot of people throw that word around without properly understanding it). When you’ve learned what healthy thinking is like and the differences in unhealthy thinking, you’ll begin to see that we all are somewhere on the scale and have a kind of baseline for how people generally think.
From there you can dig in to how the brain actually works, which I’m sure Derren touches on in his book. So that tells you WHY people are hard wired to do certain things. It doesn’t have to be a complicated book, but it will all add to key areas of knowledge on the subject.
Mine came from a combination of books, having quite a messed up childhood surrounded by some people with personality disorders who also attracted them because that’s what happens. Then I went into adulthood and surrounded myself with those types of people because it’s all I knew, it felt natural. Then eventually the penny dropped that something was wrong and I began studying it. You might even want to do a psychology degree where you’ll learn about everything from why clothes shops for young people play loud music that is modern (not just because young people like the music, but to keep old people out). To scientific tests that have been carried out on behaviour etc.
And at that time you’re in a better place to read books by famous people like Freud. So it’s a journey, but when you read the Tricks of the Mind book, make a few notes of the books on psychology he says he has read.
Hope that helps. Know it’s a bit long winded but it’s always best to do things but by bit, otherwise we tend to give up if we jump into books that just sound ridiculous if they’re read without the foundations of knowledge that allow us to see why what they’re saying makes sense and why they became so famous in their field.
