  • Here's a 1976 Williams Space Odyssey pinball machine in action. This is the two-player version of the more common four-player Space Mission.
Williams sold a TON of Space Mission/Odyssey machines and this game seems to be very popular. It has a fairly novel swinging target in the centre of the playfield, but this feature was used on several games in the 60's and 70's - pretty much exclusively by Williams - on games like Heat Wave (which had two) and Swinger.
The unusual lower playfield layout meant that ball control is a bit more difficult to maintain than on a "normal" machine. There are kick-out holes just to the outside of the flippers so if the player tries to cradle the ball on the flipper, it will fall into the hole and get kicked back onto the playfield. This could be manipulated, if timed correctly, to hit the swinging target and rebound into the opposing side's kick-out hole. This pattern could be repeated over and over with little risk of losing the ball and the player could rack up points (and free games) without too much skill or effort.
The spinner shot on the left is fairly fun to shoot for and the game plays quite quickly if it's set-up properly and the flippers are well maintained. It's not an overly "fun" game, but it's not a terrible one, either.
Space Odyssey/Mission was designed by Steve Kordek with artwork by Christian Marche. More info on this game (and it's four-player brother) can be found here:

Used to play the four player version of this game called "Space "Mission" at the local Zayre dept. store when I was a kid in the mid 70's

I'm so glad I found this! I've been trying all day to find a machine with those kickout holes by the flippers.

I like this one for the striking Apollo-Soyuz Test Project imagery on the backglass (which is a blatant imitation of a specific Robert McCall painting--you can tell by the eight-rayed sunburst blasting through the sort of cloudy space nebulosity, which was a calling card of McCall's, though the original is more cross-like).

awesome pin mate, normally not a fan of em stuff but that has some great looking shots and I love the moving target like the one in black pyramid.
thanks for sharing these videos and I always look forward to them (love getting first like or even better first view) so keep em' coming 😉

What a beautiful playfield! The game looks to be in great shape.
Those kick-out holes are wild, why did they put in so many?!

This game is fun but ultimately I found it too easy to beat. Sold mine within a year. Great game for beginners and kids because it's very forgiving.

The machines I post on youtube are games that I've either owned or that I have fixed up for others in my shop.

How much would a machine like space odyssey sell at?

Juan Vega This title is worth $500-$1000, assuming it is fully working and the condition decent.

I got one of those are they worth anything?

Yes. Actual value depends on a number of things, such as condition, functionality and location. A friend of mine just sold a very nice example in good working order for about $1200 in Ontario, Canada (in cdn $). Hope this helps.

Get on the forums at Pinside.com and you can find someone there that is likely willing to sell.

Archie Bunker had this in his bar.

I remember him playing this one in an episode ("That's half a million, you owe me a nickel."). On the other hand, in the spinoff "Archie Bunker's Place", he had what appears to be a Gottlieb "Hit The Deck" with the fake-digital score reels. (Technically, being in New York, he should've had the add-a-ball "Neptune" instead, but that's for another day.)
