  • One of my favorite snares: The Ludwig Black Magic snare drum in 14x6.5 played in a full processed drum mix as well as raw (unprocessed) with overhead and close mic sound only. This is one of 14 videos about my whole snare drum collection. 13 single snare drums and one video comparing all 13 snare drum sounds back to back.

    THE ULTIMATE SNARE DRUM COMPARISON.
I tuned all my snare drums to the exact same pitch using a tuner.
Drum heads are the same for all snares as well as positioning of microphones and processing of the snare sound.
    An experiment for sure ...

Tobias, OUTSTANDING video and OUTSTANDING playing & comparison of raw verses full mix. First, your playing is excellent and I'd like to hear more! Second, your sound both mixed and raw was GREAT! Your snare is well tuned (not hard to do with Ludwig) and the processed sound just takes it to another level. What mics (and other sound gear) are you using and what effects did you add? Thanks in advance for any info you are willing to share. Much appreciated!!!

thanks a lot my friend! Mics for snare are Shure beta 57 and KSM 137. The head as mentioned in the video. Processing is way to complex for a comment. But it consists of heavy compression, EQ, sidchain compression, reverb

Here's the hilarious, or ironic, part: This Ludwig costs a fraction of what most other snares cost, and the sound is just as good, if not better than many other snares. Who gives a frig that their made in China. Show me one drum company not using some Chinese made part in their lines somewhere. Oh, and I've never seen an audience yet who cared how much your snare cost.
If you have a snare that's just not putting out the sound you want, start with a hoop change. I've seen lifeless snares transformed by switching to a different hoop option (triple flange, S, or Diecast). EVERY snare ships will three, pretty dramatic sound possibilities, which can be achieved with a hoop change.

I actually like this series better than the Black Beauty. I'm gonna get one in every size. I've watched/listened to demos of all 4(?) sizes they make, & they ALL sounded great!

@@just82much51 did you end up liking the 8" depth? How does it compare to this one? I'm considering getting one! Thanks in advance!

@@xMotionXVx I have had it for several months now and it is in excellent drum and I haven’t even changed the stock head yet. Lol I will share a few thoughts:
      1. It’s a very nice sounding drum with good range, low, medium and high ranges all have nice tones. Being a metal drum, there is some definite ring which I have dampened a little bit. I’d much rather have the ring and dampen it than have drum with less tone that you cannot easily bring out. This is my first 8” drum and I’m really impressed. It gives you such a deeper tone (in my opinion) than most of the 5.5” snares that I have played.
      2. The hardware on the BM is nice, though it’s not the top notch hardware that I’m sure you would find on the BB. That does not bother me. I actually like the throw a lot. It’s smooth and easy to throw. The snare wire adjustment turns easy also.
      3. The only real down side is the weight. It is a heavy drum! If you are going to actively gig with this drum, be prepared for the extra weight. Being a deeper drum, it also takes up a little more room height wise. That shouldn’t be an issue for most drummers, but I thought I’d mention it. In terms of depth, they are all pretty much 14” anyway.
All in all, I’m VERY pleased with it and am very glad that I bought it. I think the price is still about the same as it was when I bought mine. I imagine they will go up like everything else.
One last thing, I did a side by side comparison of Ludwig’s new Universal Series a few weeks ago. We put the BM side by side with the Walnut and Cherry 6.5” snares. While the hardware isn’t as nice (not crazy about the throw), I ended up buying the Walnut and using it as a side snare to the left of my HHs. I have it tuned high and it sounds beautiful, a really nice compliment to the medium tuned Magic. The Universal Series is priced similarly to the Black Magic and may be an other option for you as either a main snare or a side snare. Since it is 6.5” deep, it’s a little lighter than the BM.
Anyway, I hope that all helps. When you make a decision, please comment below on what you decide to get and how you like your new drum. Take care and God bless!!!!

@@just82much51 thank you for the insight man! I can't really find the $400 range black magics, only the universal series. I'm still thinking about getting the 14x8 with the die cast hoops. Also I will be playing really heavy music and may rarely use the throw 😅😅. Is the throw the only downside that you've noticed?
