"knowing that some people were gonna like it and some people weren't" I literally haven't met one person who liked it. The fact that a tsa agent is the one example he could give of someone who did like it kinda proves my point.
The TSA agent was just trying to be nice to him. I'm sure they didn't even like the ending either.
From all the reviews and breakdowns of GOT Season 8, it sounds like D&D wanted to quickly rush season 8 out (even declining WB's offer for more episodes and seasons) so they could quickly get to work on their Star Wars project.
The whole final season just screams that they wanted to get out as soon as possible. And its obvious that this is the reason they were booted off of Star Wars.

Divisive? It was 100% hated. Proving these hacks had zero concept without a book.
The final season/seasons since it was broadcast in two parts,ruined the show. To this day I haven’t rewatched the show knowing how the last season and especially the finale was done. With an episode being so dark it was almost unwatchable and the 180 degree change of Daenerys Targaryen in the final episode, this viewer felt betrayed after putting time in to watch the series
It’s a shame since I enjoyed the series up into this point.
It not just the ending. That entire season was awful.
It wasn't divisive so much as the ending felt rushed. With a number of story lines to close, it is tricky to doing well.

Honestly the man most responsible for the horrible ending is George RR Martin, the man spent a decade procrastinating and still hasn’t even finished Winds Of Winter! If you noticed, the quality of the show dropped once they caught up to where the books left off. And since it seems likely GRRM isn’t going to finish those last 2 books before her dies we will never truly get a satisfying end to the series.
There is still hope for TWOW to release though. A Dream of Spring, not so much.
It wasn't controversial, really. It was bad.
The end was not divisive it was unanimously hated. Thats not divisive. It was a writing staff and production team that did not let the story tell them the ending, but rather went on an ego trip and swung their dicks all over the finale. Resulting in a terrible ending. The show was so good though that the terrible unanimously agreed bad ending did not affect the legacy of the show. So many quality moments in the show, but don't try to say the finale was divisive. You will not find a game of thrones fan who likes hte ending. You guys messed up.
I rewatched all of it last year and it was even more obvious how bad the last couple of seasons are, but especially the final one. I honestly would be fine with what happens with Daenerys at the end, if it was earned!! They rushed everything so much that nothing feels like it should happen, especially something as big and crazy as her stuff. Compared to the beginning of the show when things happen at a really nice, slow pace, that had you captured the whole time, and all decisions made sense, it's glaringly bad.
I know Josh couldn't push them here for any "real answers" on the topic since GOT is a past project... but holy shit, they still can't own up to the fact that they completely shit the bed just because they were too giddy about starting to work on Star Wars. We all know HBO was down to give them more episodes and even another season to finish things up properly... but nope, D&D told them the story could be finished in just 6 episodes.
Ending this with real crybaby energy: I will never forget what they did to Game Of Thrones and I will never support another one of their projects in the future, no matter whoever else is involved.
I think people are too focused on season 8 because of the dark episode and Danny’s seemingly abrupt turn to madness. Season 7 had just as many problems. I wouldn’t say the last 2 seasons are unwatchable, but I would never voluntarily rewatch them.
I am sure that I can say for all the Game of Thrones fandom... A ROYAL BIG F*** YOU for rushing and ruining Game of Thrones... if HBO had any sense an immediate retcon pronto! and you D&D deserve to never work again in the industry for your greed to jump ship fast to Disney...

Dumb and Dumber
The penultimate episode I felt was excellent. Epic and captivating. The fight between the hound and the mountain with the backdrop of the wreckage unbelievable. The arc of arya and how beautiful it was that the Mountain was like you dont want revenge trust me leave. Danaeyrus having a realistic arc because someone who is hollier than though about whats wrong with the world and believes they are the savior is bound to hate the world and have an ego that gets out of control. Loved that episode. YOu nailed it. Have to say though the finale was a disaster. It was a staff who was clearly in a bubble, out of touch, and got ego drunk. Tried to be overly cool and selacious and different and fucked up the ending. Stories will tell you the ending. Endings are not a time to swing your dick. Terrible ending and probably 99.9 percent of people hated the ending
