Hank is so fortunate to have found a home with Rachel. Someone who wanted to do things right for the dog. Whenever I brought a new Doberman into my life I took the first week off, stayed home and altered every single area of my life around the new dog. The payoff is huge. So many problems can be avoided that way. Well done Rachel and Hank!🐾❤️🐾

All great tips! We currently have our third rescue Dobie and have also had/have breeder-bought pups. It is so very important to remember when adopting a rescue that this is a dog that is genetically driven to have a strong connection with its human, but may have only been hurt or let down by humans in the past. It may take time for him/her to understand that not all humans are going to hurt them, and that not all humans are going to abandon them or let them down. Don't be frustrated or disappointed. Be patient and give them time to learn to trust again. The trust and love that you will receive from a rescue is like none other that you can ever know.

Emmitt, my blue dobie mix -- also with a curly tail! -- was adopted at about 10 months old. He would have been about 8 months old when he was found in a park in Texas. He wasn't the dog I intended to adopt when I visited his foster family. While discussing options with his fosters, he hopped up on the couch, put his head in my lap, stared at me with those soul penetrating Dobie eyes, and laid claim to my heart.
As mentioned in Hank's video, he had issues! Being an abandoned rescue, he was very reactive and protective of me when on leash. I had to keep him muzzled out in public for most of his first year when on-leash. Off leash he has always been a totally playful and goofy Doberman. While I first attempted to work with a 'positive' behavioral trainer for 3 months, there was no progress in addressing his reactivity. After consulting with other owners who were successful addressing similar issues, I chose a 2 week train & board program with a local balanced trainer who uses an e-collar. This was life changing for both of us!
As we now approach our 2 year 'gotcha' date on Halloween, he has grown into a wonderful companion who is far more confident in new situations. He is still protective of me on-leash, but his reactions are controlled and appropriate. Verbal commands now override his instincts. (He wears his e-collar as a 'reminder,' but it is often not powered "on" unless we are going to a large off-leash area.) This summer we did about 14 nights of camping/ backpacking along with summiting 10+ 13,000+ ft peaks.

Mine was turned into the Humane Society when he was 7 months old at 40 lbs. looked like a skeleton, he is a half and half and is currently 13 months old 101 lbs. and has a massive build. He came with all his papers, AKC registration and so on. Bonded with me right of the bat. Only issue so far is he is scared to death of brushes; I think a brush was used to beat him with, so I use grooming mitts, he turns to mush when I groom him. He loves my wife and grandkid's and follows them around everywhere; he has more character than the whole outdoors. His training has been fairly easy with the typical Doberman stubbornness at times.

Hi from South Africa. I recently rescued a Doberman after years of having well known breeder Dobies. I’m very blessed that his wasn’t a typical rescue situation more of a home that was no longer suitable due to changing work circumstances. He settled in to my house and routine in literally 3 days he is now 11 months old and we are only dealing with nervousness in a social dog environment at dog school. Thanks for the great chanel and video

Hi. I homed a Dobermann puppy who was found wandering the streets of Leeds, England. Short version of the story was he was not wanted by his owner. I had a meet & greet session at the kennels. He came up to me and placed his head on my lap and just wanted to be stroked. I ended homing him as I didn’t want him to be PTS. He had a few issues with anxiety. He was like my shadow and needed work. He would get over excited and would play bite and could break skin but there was no aggression. We named him Zack and he is such a loveable dog. Good with people and dogs. Loves cuddles on the bed. I agree with visiting a vet. I noticed he has a allergy. Which unfortunately costs £185.00 every three months. On 21.10.2022 Zack celebrated his 2nd Birthday and on the 26.10.2022 he would have been with us a year.

We have adopted a rescued doberman two years ago. He was found in a forest with a female doberman (probably his sister), but she was already dead when people spotted them. The male one, the one we adopted, was really scared, next to her and he was only bones. My husband and I went to see him the next day because the woman who accepted him to stay in her house was able to keep him only for few days. He was so frightened and so thin. You could only see his bones. And he was about 6-8 months old. Anyway, that day he wasn't much brave to come to us, he was scared from other dogs in the yard, so we were able just to give him few cuddles and spend a short time around him and we left home to think about it. However, the woman called us the same evening, she was so frustrated and I heard a despair in her voice. She told us that the moment we left he started crying and he never stopped. The next morning she called us and said that she wasn't able to sleep at all because he wouldn't stop crying. She said that she couldn't handle him anymore, so we could bring him home or she would have to return him to the forest. So we brought him to our house and instantly he felt home. It was incredible. He was screaming all day and night and then, as soon as he entered our home, he found a comfortable place and fell asleep feeling no worries at all.
That's just a short story about our lovely doberman and how he actually picked us to be his owners. He had a problem of walking outside because he was scared of, literally, everything, but very quickly (in just couple of months) he got used to the world surrounding him and started enjoying it.
He is now about 3 years old and he has some issues, like being too spoiled and pretending being dumb 😂, but he is adorable, healthy, energetic dog with beautiful heart. 🖤

I have a rescue that was a owner surrender. Because he bit someone. The owner had him kenneled at a vets office. He was kenneled there for 3 months when the vet called and told the owner he needed to get him out of there. The dog was going to hurt someone there. If the owner didn’t get him out the vet was going to euthanize him. The boy was 3 years old euro lines. We were not sure but wanted to at least try to save him. When we went to pick him up he was growling and biting the kennel in the vets office. But when I told him to sit he would stop and sit. Took a treat from me very gentle. Then would revert to growling agian. It was a small noisy room with a bunch of kennels and barking dogs. I told him to sit and we went in the kennel put a muzzle on him and walked him outside with no issues. When we took him outside his whole demeanor changed all he wanted to do was pee on a tree. We opened the truck . He jumped right into the crate. It took him about 6 months for that far away look to start softening. There is alot of things we had to work through. He is still with us and our other dogs. He just turned 5 in April . We live him to pieces, still work through issues but he is a big old snuggle buddie that loves to run and play. But definitely needs structure.

What’s the opinion of getting a 5 yr old momma Dobe from the local Humane Society given up by her family? I’ve had 5 Dobes, my spouse, a few more. She also understands Spanish, which we would need to learn commands perhaps.
She also has Von Willebrands disease, low level.

What if you don’t have the luxury of multiple meetings, prior to adoption? How can I reassure the dog, and ease its anxiety?

Exercise caution when "rescuing" any adult dog, ESPECIALLY those of the larger breed. Two years ago, my wife and I agreed to take a three year old male European Doberman from a guy we met. We already had a seven month old female American Doberman at the time. When I was working in my barn one evening, the male dog went berserk in my house and attacked my wife. It is a long and amazing account... but the short version is that several miracles (literally) occurred that evening or my wife would have died. I made it into the house in time to physically detach the dog's teeth from her mangled arm and wrestle it to the floor in a submission chokehold for 10 minutes. I was eventually able to kill the 90 lb. dog with my handgun. I was injured and my wife badly injured from the 204 puncture wounds on her arm, hands, torso, and fingers. One finger was bitten off completely. She spent 12 days in the hospital and did hand/finger physical rehab for 11 months thereafter.
    God saved her life!
My point is... be aware that an adult dog may have "issues" of which you may NOT be aware of!
Never trust any dog, especially around small children. Adopted dogs can be high risk.

I rescued a gorgeous Boxer/Lab cross who came within a couple inches of biting my toddler’s face. Skipping all the awful details of how these behaviors were increasing, we brought him to professional trainers where he was an angel. Our vet had to put him down when I couldn’t find someone who wanted to take the risk of living with him. I discovered a short time later that he had what is called Sudden Rage Syndrome where his brain misfired and he literally went from an angel to one scary dude and as soon as the episode was over he was back to wagging his tail and wanting to give kisses. I never adopted another dog for almost 30 years, I bought them from reputable breeders. This year we wanted to stop buying dogs when so many were homeless so we decided to do our part in helping our Humane Society and recently rescued a Pitbull pup and a senior hound. They are amazing, loving, intelligent and loyal…and one day I plan to buy or rescue a Doberman. I keep my eye on the local rescues but I’m now well versed in the signs of what can go seriously wrong.

IMO A Doberman with long ears and tail are not A true representative of the breed. I am not interested in watching a misfigured display of the breed.I have had several ,over the years
and have had 3 litters sold by adding restrictions for the potential owners. Thank you for understanding my opinion. RMG

I love the Doberman and am sad to hear they may go extinct in the next 40 years due to inbreeding and lack of genetic diversity. The only thing that can save this breed is a well planned out cross breeding program led by a team of geneticists.

He is biased and does NOT tell the truth about adopting a dog from a shelter or outside one. His facial expressions show his bias and so do his other vids featuring HIS Rottweillers.
