I’ve never tried it but if you can draw the spiral lines on the surface of the cone and then scale in,as I did with the spiral, then it should work the same. Let me know if it works!
Great tutorial, did a test run it worked great. However when I went to do a final version upon ungrouping the helix (4:05 ish) the spiral is connecting with the extruded circle causing it to become fragmented in appearence, any idea why?
Thanks for watching my video and hopefully figured out the issue. Not quite sure what’s going on on your end but maybe your helix coil is too dense relative to the length of the shaft. Or maybe you are selecting the wrong portion to drag in when making the screw grooves. Best of luck with the troubleshooting!
I've watched a few of these make a spiral videos now. They all use roughly the same technique although if there is one more straightforward than the others this one might be it. The creativity to come up with the basic technique is impressive. When I first saw the technique I thought there must be something more straightforward. You make all this stuff and then you erase almost all of it. Is that really the best way? I certainly don't have a different idea.
It’s been a long time since I used sketchup and these videos were originally made as classroom teaching material- where I learned first and then simplified the explanation for my own students. It’s been a pleasant surprise to see how many other people found this content useful over the years and still see the video today. Some of the techniques are useful for doing other stuff too- check out my other videos as I have them in a sequence for learning with this screw being the most advanced thing you can make. SketchUp, way back at least, relied on the push pull simplicity and plotting line vectors to model. to make a spiral thread with those few means this is the only way I know of doing it - perhaps you can download a plug-in to help now as sketch up used to be great with supporting those. at 0:36 and 1:17 you can double click the circle surface and press delete to remove all the lines at once. saves a lot of time. also, shouldn't you do the scale thing on the other side as well (4:39)? It looks to me like the screw will be kinda uneven in shape if this is not done. great video though. helped me a lot.
I am sure you are supposed to, but it makes the head of the screw off centered. Then it is just a hassle, I am sure he just kinda uh skipped that part.
Yes you are right about scaling on the other side as well otherwise the thread will be uneven. Just checking comments now and I realize I did miss that. Hopefully you still got the result you wanted, maybe after some experimentation with the shape.
I followed your video to the T. and a bunch of others with slightly different means to an end, but I keep loosing 6 sections at the top of my threads. any ideas?
Not quite sure why that would be happening. Hopefully you figured it out. But when you create a copy of the coil shape and then rotate it perhaps it is not exactly a 50 percent rotation you are making; is it possible that the spacing between each coil is not exactly a 50 percent rotation on both sides?
Is there any way you would be able to give the screw itself width? I wasn't able to just use the push tool. I am trying to 3d print it but it wont work.
I haven’t made one of these in a while but you need the push tool to work for my video. If the push tool isn’t working then scale up the whole model maybe? You can also use the quick key for a push and then move in. Good luck with that 3d print!
I don't understand how you are multiplying to x50. When I do it, the lines i copied (in its original lengths) move up by 50 but they don't stretch the lines to a length of 50. Can you please explain step by step for me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.
