    Cincinnati is where Procter & Gamble has there headquarters. Since Procter & Gamble products sponsored so many soap operas throughout the years, it doesn't surprise me that they'd used Downtown Cincinnati for a backdrop to one of these shows.

      That is a great shot of the Cincinnati skyline from across the river as it turns from day to night. The skyline silhouetted against the sunset from river level in the closing credits is an excellent shot, also.

    "The Edge of Night" was riding sky high right throughout 1970 in the daytime ratings landing in 2nd place behind sister soap "As The World Turns". For the first sixteen years it aired, the show was a hit for the Tiffany network
    Sadly two years later it's golden run would end due to Procter & Gamble insisting all of the daytime dramas they sponsored aired in one continuous block on CBS. The subsequent change in timeslot had a disasterous impact on the show.
    The end result would see the series tumble towards the bottom of the daytime viewing charts and CBS would wipe it's hands of the show completely by late 1975. Despite ABC giving the series a second lease on life, the damage (ratings wise) had already been done.

      @Christopher Hagee Search and ATWT were doing very well at their time slots 12:30EST and 1:30pm EST respectfully. CBS did not want to risk moving those shows to a new time. They had to move GL and Edge to a new time. Edge was doing well at 3:30pm EST.

    • @woohooboy
      @woohooboy 3 года назад +2

      @Christopher Hagee - That's an interesting lineup which certainly could have saved "Edge" from the fate that it was dealt with. However NBC were making significant inroads during this period and had built a 90 min powerblock with three soaps which broke through the CBS stronghold during this time.
      "Days Of Our Lives" aired at 2pm followed "The Doctors" at 2:30pm and "Another World" at 3pm.
      Whilst "As The World Turns" would have held it's own against "The Doctors", "Search For Tomorrow" would probably have been thumped by "Days Of Our Lives" and "Guiding Light" would have been trounced by "Another World"

    Growing up in Cincinnati, here is some useless 'Edge of Night' Trivia about the downtown scene showing the two prominent buildings in the foreground. The red lettering in this video at the top of the building that is next to the Carew Tower read, "CENTRAL TRUST BANK". Today the signage reads, "PNC".... Useless Trivia..... My Great-aunt Agnes lived in the Carew Tower downtown when I was very young and The Edge of Night came on right after my 3 o'clock children's show ended. The opening intro/music with the Carew Tower shown on TV scared me to death because the Carew Tower scared me when my parents would take me down there to visit "Aunt Agnes".

      @@cobaltmidnightoilamp6748 Yes! As a young child, I was told that Aunt Agnes lived in the (then) "Netherland HIlton" Hotel which was part of the multipurpose commercial structure known as the "Carew Tower". I remember one time on a visit looking out her living room window down at the busy city street below which I assume was W. 5th St.. When I was VERY LITTLE, I thought that Aunt Agnes was the person who turned on the outside top tower lights of the Carew Tower at night with a switch she had out in the hallway--- through a child's eyes.... Those nighttime outside tower lights on the Carew Tower always mesmerized me as a little child when viewing them from far away in Delhi. In 1975, I actually stayed at the hotel for three nights when I was a member of the Cincinnati Reds Rooters Club and attending a special Reds Rooters Weekend sponsored by Stroh's Beer. That was when the Reds won their first of back-to-back World Series Championships (1975 and 1976). Sorry so lengthy!

    The variant of the WCBS test pattern seen at the end, was emitted from a monoscope. The greyscale gradations were achieved by finely spaced concentric lines. That layout dates to about 1955-56, although the way the calls and COL were positioned dates to 1950 and the type font for the calls to about 1948. Would appear the greyscale on the special "bullseye" pattern, in its original state before the numerous processings, would have been 36%, 50% and 64%, with the grey outside the height circle being 57%.

    Ii read that due to the late afternoon airing - what do you expect from a program called "The Edge of Night"? - it had strong demographics among men coming home from work and small children coming home from school (although some of the latter said they were scared by the theme). IMO opinion P&G should have used some more men and children oriented items in their line for commercials (e.g. use Crest toothpaste instead of Thrill dishwashing liquid - I doubt anyone makes it anymore - and Sure antiperspirant instead of Prell shampoo - my late Mom used to use the tube form of that shampoo which someone else makes.)
