The melody is divided into 3 parts. It seems that the first was composed by a certain Tommy Potts, a violinist born in 1912 and died in 1988, inspired by the flight of a butterfly in his garden. The second and third parts, on the other hand, would be older and in fact are present almost identical in a famous collection of Irish music written in 1883, the Ryan's Mammoth Collection. Typical demonstration of how traditional culture is transformed through the generations: today this piece is one of the most famous pieces of Celtic music.
