It's always fun when people come up and ask what you're doing. It's even more fun when they stick around to see you work. I ran into a teacher I was mentoring at a park a while back. He watched me do my whole activation. At one point I worked France on 20m and he couldn't believe I was talking to someone in France with the little tiny radio I had on the picnic table. It was great LOL
That's awesome! Totally agree. I've had some pretty funny interactions out in the wild. Most of the time, people are just confused why I'm doing morse code. Loved these two guys. Asked genuine questions and were really interested in it. I'm just lucky I switched over to 17meters and was experiencing my first cold spell of the night and then one very timely QSO. Great job advocating for the hobby! I often think about getting new people interested in the hobby and it's great to see their interest light up and what was interesting to them. I often want to do my best job advocating when somebody comes up and asks questions, but it's so hard to pause things on the spot. I'm thankful when Becky can then be the advocate while I try to get to a stopping point. We've often talked about making a little mini documentary with the purpose of getting people's interest in learning Morse code. Something that would include pieces of History but also the elements of why it's so fun and relevant to learn today. I have the beginnings of an outline for such a thing. If we end up making it, we would put it somewhere so anybody who wants to can link to it maybe with a QR code to hand out for people who want to learn more.
Haha Huge + 1! 99% of my interactions out in the wild are unfortunately much less cordial as people are interrupting mid-exchange. I ironically had a guy come up to me during my first ever DX in a POTA activation. Had a P2P with New Zealand and the guy was asking me questions I had to tell him to [please] hold on! haha! The reason this real-world scenario turned into a good video was due to a perfect storm where I felt 20 meters dry up, hopped over to 17 meters and started calling CQ and it was super slow, then at the precise moment they gained interest I randomly was able to get a QSO and explain it to them live! Mike! That's an incredible idea. You should absolutely do it! It would be a great resource to point people towards the hobby. I 100% share the same motivation as you. This CW experience has been so captivating for me and I've instantly felt an urge to invite others to participate and experience the excitement that comes from it. That's really why I share my journey on RUclips. Only a few months ago I was watching Thomas K4SWL and Aaron W4ARB on RUclips and it really motivated me to keep going and give it a shot. 73!
