- The courage shown by fire crews as the firestorm impacted the township of Batlow NSW was nothing short of incredible.
Professional news photographer Timothy Dean and I worked together to cover this historic event.
Whilst a number of homes were lost, many were saved during the fire fighting efforts.
This video documents the events that unfolded that day.
You are like the weatherman version of Steve Irwin. So professional, caring, and the best example of how to document everything without being careless. Thank you thank you thank you Daniel!
What a hellscape… I’m amazed that anyone could have the capacity to stay calm under such conditions. Fireys are just amazing, and so are you.
Hi mate. Lost my home in Batlow. Don't think there was any video of it in this but I know Timothy has posted a photo of it burning. It's hard to watch but also important for people to see what is actually happening. Even though I don't have a home to go back to, it's amazing that they managed to save the majority of the 'undefendable' town, so at least I have a community to go back to.
I'm so sorry you lost your home
You are one in a million Daniel. From tornado spotting and SAR across the US to the literal hell of the East Coast of Aus, you must have a lot of skills under that belt of yours.
America is praying for you all.
God Bless and stay safe.
Daniel it's Randy Chamberlain I spoke to you last year in North Platte Nebraska at the motel. It was such a great pleasure meeting you.
My heart breaks for everyone in Australia. Please stay safe down there fantastic footage.
I wish I could help out somehow. If there is please let me know
My heart is breaking for the people that are being affected by this. Stay safe when you're in the middle of this.
Thanks for your work Daniel, best of luck.
Thank you Mr. Shaw for doing this. Really shows us what's going on. Stay safe and hope to see you again on the plains in 2020...
Who are you man? You're like the batman of extreme weather events. What is your background if you don't mind us asking? You're ability to remain calm and concise and situationally aware and boss a radio is very rare. It's even rarer for aussie to also be an extremely skilled NWS trained severe weather spotter in the states.
Devastating! Thank you for documenting this. Stay Strong Batlow 🍎
Brightest of Blessings to all the people and other living beings in Australia.
So sad, been watching all these fires from my little island , Galveston, Texas and feel for those that have lost properties, loved ones, and for all the animals. Please stay safe Daniel, and we look forward to you back in the states come Tornado season.
Great video really shows how difficult the job is. Impressed with the fireys very professional

Good videoing. Really gives a much better than the short video-clips on the news of how bad things are.
Truly sad what's happening down there in Australia.
Hoping you guys get some good rain there soon...
This is the best, most representative video.
My old hometown, and my other hometown Cabramurra lost the primary school I went to and some houses as well :( Have to say got a bit emotional seeing that, some of my first memories are of my grandparents strawberry farm in Batlow.
:(
Thank you for saving the country🙏
So sad to see homes gone😔😔
God bless everyone & animal in Australia❗️ Praying for you all 🙏🏼
Such a horrible tragedy. Please stay safe, Daniel.
Nice work Daniel!!
Very heartbreaking footage . Stay safe all
Apocalyptic levels of destruction :( Australia, I'm so sorry you're suffering all this, I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy. Stay safe everyone! Please also, where possible, look out for any form of distressed wildlife and be prepared to take it to any animal rescue centres if you can.
Take water with you, take water bowls for animals to drink from. Take blankets, take medical kits, take food, spare clothes and pay attention to the authorities. My deepest condolences from me here in the UK.
Thank you of your coverage, I wish i was there to watch this live, Do you think crews are too far separated ? or not enough crews to fight such fires, There was a lot of events that houses could have been saved but where not, How many times in this video do you think crews of fire trucks where near by ?
The sheer size of the amount of land that was burning when this video was taken is hard to comprehend. The fire and emergency services would have been severely stretched. In all, over 24 million hectares of land burned over several months, larger than the whole island of Great Britain. early January saw many of the largest and most ferocious fires, fuelled by hot weather, strong wind, and very dry vegetation. Some of these fires burned for weeks and devoured towns. In the region where this video is taken, there were 3 big fires that merged into a devastating megafire. My city was blanketed in smoke for days around this time, and I live at least 8 to 10 hours drive south from this place, as there were many fires all over the south east of the country at that time. Bear in mind Australia is about as big as the USA but with a much smaller population, think the size of the USA with just California’s population. It’s a country that sees a lot of bushfires but that period was the worst ever recorded. There are lots of skilled, very experienced fire fighting crews here, but the amount of land that was burning was unprecedented. Fire crews would have been heavily stretched even with all the additional firefighters and equipment coming from overseas. Just terrible.
Praying for relief!! ❤️
Are other countries sending help? Planes, crews? God help all you brave souls.
Canada and US got some crews there, think more going today.
Canada, US, New Zealand. Have heard other countries sending machinery (Singapore is one I think).
how can i order the license to use this footages ?
thanks in advance

0:17 We begin by acknowledging the original custodians of this land, the Gadigal and Wangal people of the Eora nation, that we stand on today.
Omg ...scary
One word: Hellacious! Will Evergreen be sending in their 747s to assist with aerial retardant, does anyone know?
How absolutely terrible.
God help Australia with it's people and beautiful nature. Hold on to y'alls faith and let's pray for rain. With the help of our Good Lord Almighty God, rain will come to put the fires out. In the name of the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit. In you we trust Father God.
