Darkness on the Edge of Town: Paramount Theatre, Asbury Park - Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band's intimate full album performance of ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ was recorded at Asbury Park’s Paramount Theatre in 2009. This program, filmed without an audience, successfully recreates the stark atmosphere of the original release.

As a kid I enjoyed Darkness. The music and the intensity of Bruce's vocals. I turned 50 this year. Now I "understand" Darkness. Where the intensity came from. The desperation. Longing for hope. Thanks Bruce for writing the soundtrack of our life.
I’m 37 and I feel like Darkness on the Edge of Town is my mid to late 30’s anthem.
I spent decades visiting that spot out by Abraham's bridge... luckily I don't go there anymore...

I'm 35 and been a Bruce fan for 20 years...heard this song and the whole album countless times - but this year it's hit me like I'm hearing it all for the first time and I finally understand...I get it @@jeffreynichol671
I dont get how someone has the imagination for this type of sound. Its so unique to a point where no other artist can come close to copying it. Its almost like listening to a play with every song he performs.
No audience but he still sings it with as much passion as ever all these years later.
I rate Darkness on the edge of town as the best album by the Boss.
Bruce's samurai record. Perfection. The one I go back to when spirits are low and need to recharge for the fight ahead

I grew up listening to born in the u.s.a and tunnel of love they got me through those tough teenage years of the bedroom rebel ..heard a few more albums then that just didnt gel with me... but then a bit later on heard darkness on the edge of town and i agree definitely one of if not the best. I must listen to samurai? If its as good as they say.....everyones a winner ;0)

Bruce has said that he feels this is as good as any song he has ever written. For many years it was assumed to be the last song written for Darkness, but it was actually first cut early on in the sessions. The version on record didn't get recorded until later, but the song had been written before the band stepped into the studio in June 1977.
'Darkness' is my favorite album of all time. Not just by The Boss... By anyone. I was the perfect age when it came out and it felt like he recorded it specifically for me and my friends. We still all stand #jerseyproud !!
I am Australian, yet Mr Springsteen has a way of writing music and songs that touches everyone.My friends often ask me my favourite Springsteen song or album, it's something I can't answer, Darkness and Nebraska are right up the top. He’s just got a way of singing lyrics that speak to everyone. I know it’s not the original meaning, but I’m gay and I’ve struggled with coming out and these lyrics hit me in the heart bone. I guess everyone struggles with issues that deep down are all the same.
The amazing thing with the best singer/songwriters is their music connects with us all differently. We can all get something from it, I have always seen the Darkness as depression and needing to tackle that darkness to get beyond it.
this song resonated with me in the same way. i think i got that i'm gay while listening to backstreets as well. funny how songs can get you in some really unexpected ways sometimes

Bruce has been my favorite artist for most of my life and I've always felt this song and album are underrated. Like, this is a top 10 Bruce song as far as I'm concerned! That said, I just found this version for the first time and wow it was incredible. He puts so much passion into every line. He takes his responsibility on delivering 110% every time he performs like MJ trying to score 30 every night knowing there were people in the arena who had never seen him play live before. Gracious, this is just the type of song and performance that makes you feel all sorts of feels!

I listen to it specifically when I am feeling low. It has helped when I have had my recurring depressions. It gives me strength and hope. Over and over again. What I didn't notice when I was young - maybe the song character either - that it wasn't a courageous one-time-only journey, but something that has to repeated, and even though the issues may not drag one down, it may still be more like dragging through than marching through. There "dreams are found and lost", not all of them will ever come true, however hard we try. And that is something to contemplate and make peace with. Absolutely love this song.
@@worldapart90 agreed, in fact I couldn’t agree more. It exercises my demons when I’m low. It helps you work through, rather than avoid the darkness. You can’t deny pain. Bruce helps bring us together, find unity and love in the pain that is our inherent to our existence. Darkness is a gift. Idk what I’d do without bittersweet music. It’s saved my life.
I believe this was done without an audience. They had to get friends and family to make up audience. I saw an interview when they asked him how does it feel to sing without an audience. His reply was if you can feel it in your heart you can perform it. These recordings have a special place for me. They are all sublime.
Man, I love that quote from him. And you can tell he means it. He definitely performs with the same level of passion and intensity, with or without an audience to perform to!

Dans cette salle du Paramount Theater , sans public , Bruce délivre une performance absolument extraordinaire , il fait passer l'émotion comme jamais , si quelqu'un a encore un doute sur la raison pour laquelle on le surnomme Le Boss , qu'il regarde ce concert , prodigieux tout simplement !
Tout à fait d'accord avec toi, pour l 'avoir vu en concert maintes fois on peut clairement dire qu il s'agit là d'une légende, un performer hors pair, probablement le dernier vrai rocker américain.
