I remember my first ever job, I, at 17, was in charge of a whole half of a store. It was just entrusted that I would take care of everything to do with the less busy half of the store, it was insane. Every Sunday for a year I would work from open at 11am to close at 7pm, and I would be the only employee on my side of the store for most of that day, only seeing other workers when they'd come to relieve me to break. It's insane that I never even questioned any of that, leaving an inexperienced child in charge of so much with very little training for 6-8 hours a day...
I had so much energy as a teenager, working from 7 to 9 wasn't a problem with school and after school job. I can't do 8 hours now without falling asleep at the wheel on the way home.

@misterthegeoff9767 true, but also dnd 5e is meant primarily for medieval style fantasy. Most things, everyday things, aren't supposed to be expensive (even though that gets contradicted constantly with the prices laid out in the books).
As an adult I realize that the superior that is cruel to a high schooler is also at their wits end and misdirecting their frustration at someone they have to train but that’s also not an excuse. Ultimately the system is a bad one.
