- Ever wonder what's in Allspice... Well Allspice Isn't a spice blend that contains 'all spices' (a question that we get all the time), but rather a single spice that tastes like a blend of spices. This is a great one to have in your spice cupboard because you can easily sub it in for other spices you may not have. It's also great in a wide range of spice blends.
Our Seasonings / Spices playlist: • Seasonings
Pimenta dioica (L.)
Plant Family: Myrtle (Myrtaceae)
Origin: West Indies
Allspice, also called pimenta,[a] Jamaica pimenta, Jamaica pepper, myrtle pepper, pimiento, and clove pepper
The Spanish ‘discovered’ this spice when they reached the Caribbean - they thought it was black pepper and ended up calling it ‘pimenta’ which is Spanish for pepper.
The name "allspice" was in use by 1621 by the English, who thought it combined the flavour of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
The warm sweet flavour of Allspice lends itself to a wide variety of both savoury and sweet foods.
Allspice is often paired with black pepper, cardoon, cinnamon, clove, and vanilla in spice blends.
It’s grown primarily in Jamaica, but commercial farms can be found across the Caribbean and Central America.
The berries are harvested while they are still unripe and green. During drying, the colour changes to a reddish-brown.
Jamaican allspice is considered the best because it has a higher oil content and better flavour than varieties grown elsewhere.
Allspice is used in Jamaican jerk seasoning and in soups, stews, and curries. It also is used in pickling spice, spiced tea mixes, cakes, cookies, and pies.
It can also be found in Swedish Meatballs, pickled herring, and many other ‘Traditional’ European dishes.
-Whole dried allspice will keep indefinitely when kept out of light in airtight jars. It can be ground in a spice mill or an electric coffee grinder. The ground spice loses flavour quickly.

How does it taste
Can u eat it raw?
PimIenta. The Spanish did not forget that missing i
Also the Spanish had little presence in Jamaica but we also introduce there farm animals, citrics... Allspice is almost unknown in the Spanish cuisine. Cheers
I love this video, you are on point from beginning to end! A lot of people don’t know about allspice/pimento... YOU NAILED IT in a short amount of time.
When you come for the flavor and leave with some knowledge this is real cooking!
I always thought allspice is a mixture of spices!!
That's mixed spice, two different things. But its easy to get them confused sometimes
Me too
Same even I didn't know
Same here!
Same!!
I had a conversation with a friend, just the other day, about the allspice berry. She too thought that it was a blend of spices. I just sent this to her. What a coincident that this topic should come up so soon after our conversation!
Alison Wiebe i thought that too😐
The government/corporate America spies on your conversations...
There is a Master mind you and me are part of it! Happy new year!
RUclips:"Yeah.... What a coincidence"
Glen, your explanation of “discovery” by Europeans, is just great.
Thank You so much for this video. I was one of them people that assumed it was a mixture of spices! We learn everyday!
This is one of my favourite spices. I always buy the whole berry and grind in a pepper grinder.
I use to confuse allspice with middle eastern 7 spice blend. Thanks for the clarity.
I was about to start purchasing my first real spices as an adult (31)M and had no clue what the heck this stuff was. Thank you for the prompt explanation
Thank you. I bought a bottle of All Spice when I check the ingredients there's nothing listed, I thought it's a combination of different spices when the truth is it's just it. Thank you for enlightening me.
As a non native English speaker this video was reeeeeeally helpful
I used to think it was a mix of 'warming' spices. Never thought it was a single spice.
I hope you're still making videos as of todaaaaaaay. Nice content! Concise, informative and not boring! More power to you
When we Asian cook soup we put
5 -7 pimento in the soup. It taste very nice. doesn't matter what soup you cook and also in stewed meat. Enjoy.
Wish you all cooks a Happy and blessed New Year. 🙌
Exactly what I wanted to know and more.
10/10
Great job
Thanks that cleared that up !!!
Very well explained too 😊
Thank you 😊
Th you, this's very useful information. I'm in France and found this term very confusing. I doubt I'll be able to purchase it here but since you've given thd Latin name, there's a chance. Merci encore.
I’m Jamaican 🇯🇲 and the new name for this is reggae ball. I use it in everything.
#pimentoseedisnowreggaeball
Thanks so much for your video, Glen! I had a feeling that pimento and allspice 'berry' were interchangeable, but wasn't sure. i went on a fruitless hunt looking for 'whole pimento' without any success. I resorted to the internet, of course, and found a few sites in which to order them. I recently discovered the whole Allspice I purchased last year, was what I actually needed and was the same thing! Your video verified this...Thanks so much! Just subscribed.
Yes, I’ve heard “pimento” referred to in Caribbean food, and I thought they meant the Capsicum pepper variety!
Thanks for the link to this episode. I’m a recent subscriber & love your channel. This episode is just one reason why.
Thanks and welcome
Informative video thank you 🙏
So should we use it like black pepper? With pepper grinder?
good question
in Poland, we use a lot of allspice in combination with bay leaf, practically in every dish
great info. exactly what I needed
Fantastic informative video! Thank you :)
Thanks so much for the great video!
Thanks you, this clarify my confusion, thought it was a mix all several spices.
Thank you for very informative and use full video!
Thank youuuuuuuuu🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
In Venezuela we call it pimienta guayabita, i love your videos.
In Poland we call it "Ziele angielskie" which translates in to "the English herb/spice" idk why :D.
There is no jerk without pimento. Beautiful flavours.
Just the history I need!
Thanks for the video. Very well delivered.
I never knew this, Good to know.👍🏼
Great video!
1:37 - I didn't know what all spice was, but if I was an editor, I'd at least bother to google it before asking you to specify the 'spice mixture'...!
Subscribed under a minute
nice series on spices. keep it up! there are so many other spices to talk about ;)
We have allspice berries in abundance here in Jamaica.
Thanks. This helped a lot!! I wanna know what family name it is in biology.
When Meg collides with Nutmeg do they cancel each other out ?
I'm absolutely surprised. Here in Brazil we call it Jamaican Black pepper. Wow it's allspice😱
Just got a lifetime supply for jerk and cocktails. You could easily do without allspice by substituting cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
Jamaican Cuisine uses Pimento in everything savory and many things sweet but not all it depends pimento id say probably more than anywhere else in the world because it is the number one spoce in majority of our cuisine especially on rhe savory side
Today I smelled an essential oil called allspice and bought it to defuse at my room, and here I was looking it up in the Internet to know which mixture of spices it consisted of. It never occurred to me that allspice was the actual name of a spice. I feel like a fool.
DecayingOrganicMater I’m 66 and have been cooking all my life and just found out what allspice actually is! Don’t feel bad just enjoy you have been informed at a young age! Lol
Its good on basicaly everything
Oops! I too thought all spice is a mix of spices..is it the same used in Turkish recipes
I make my own Allspice...it's easy. I just mix all the spices I have in my cabinet.
I have the berries. To grind them, do I crack the shell open first like a nutmeg or just put the whole berry into the grinder? Thanks
Just put the whole berry in the grinder.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking thanks. I've been wondering for months lol. Also, thanks for replying so quickly.
Can we put this on drinks like chai (milk tea)?
I have a plant. And use the leaves while making tea. The leaves I also use in cooking meat curries and making pulav. Pulav is an Indian version.of paella.
Hi there, if the recipe says 1 corn of allspice, do I crack it or do I crack it?
Yeah, I always thought that Allspice was mixed with different spices taste like cloths Net Meg, cinnamon
3:15 What spice is cardoon?
This was so awesome, I had no idea. I am going to be making Jamaican beef patties and it called for Allspice. I didn't have so I searched for the recipe to make it myself and found your video. I just can't believe i have been cooking all my life and didn't know all spice was one seed. that is so cool. I am going out to find it and ground it up for my Jamaican patties. Thank you! Also if people don't take the time to watch the video, and ask stupid questions that are painfully obvious it was answered in the video , don't waste your valuable time answering them, they're not worth it. I thank so much for the information.
Glad you enjoyed the video - good luck with the patties, I'm sure they'll be great!
Well Iived in Jamaica for 10 years and our lands we had pimento trees we harvested in the summer, dry it bag it and then it was sold. Didn't know it was used to make what is called allspice. I bought all spice in England (bought it by mistake)and I hate the smell. I have the dry berries which my brought back from Jamaica which I grind and prefer to use and I love the smell.
Thanks
The only place I've ever seen this used, was in my mother's poultry stuffing. I've been trying to find a recipe for the way she made it but everything on the internet has a lot more ingredients than her's.
I am staying in India so I don't think so I will be getting this here so can you provide any alternative to prepare pumpkin pie spice mix at home
There isn't really a replacement for allspice - It is used in some Indian cooking, the British would have brought it there and it has been incorporated into the recipes. If you are using our pumpkin spice recipe (ruclips.net/video/e24r5vNMewY/видео.html) and can't get allspice, just leave it out but make sure you put in mace and maybe just a dash of black pepper. Less than 1/8 tsp.
in Poland it's known as ziele angielskie, which means english herb. Weird i guess!
stazz316 in Ukraine it’s called fragrant pepper )))
It’s because Jamaica was a English colony and the English were responsible for the distribution and trade of allspice for a while.
We have 3 endemic Allspice in Jamaica. The common one is found in other parts of the Caribbean and Mexico.
Haha, always thought it's called old spice and couldn't find any information about it 😂
Reminds me of Apple pie spice
“Pimienta Gorda” in México
Good to know!
I bought this in a store as "Jamaican Pepper" without reading the back, thinking it's normal pepper corns just grown there 🤦🏻♀️ I guess I'll enjoy slightly less hot spiced foods then
We call it something akin of "Spice pepper" translated
Cost of all spice for 100g
So is it in kfc?
In Hebrew we call it english pepper
Kurundu is the local name for it
the local name is Pimienta Gorda and su nombre náhuatl: xocosuchil.
Glen I've got 2 litres of water to making the ginger beer at home how much of allspice, ginger, sugar and other spices would you recommend?furthermore i wanna ask that would it taste like beer made with hops please tell me 👈
Actually, it's also Native to parts of Mexico and Central America. Much like pineapple, dragon fruit and vanilla, people have misconstrue the place of origin and influence.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Found stuff that was already knew about.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Instead of saying it was "found" you could it was "traded"
Only Iraq used this spice with kabab and parpique. They have a tast ..They have a culture.
Cardoon? Do you mean cardamom ?
Nope - definitely meant cardoon.
Pimienta Gorda en México!
😆😆
here i was thinking it was the white people's adobo
cool. but maybe try to explain the flavors of these?
Sorry you missed it - we say in the video and the show notes that it's flavour is a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
I guess I didnt hang on long enough. thanks.
It was only 3.5 minutes... am I that boring?
Not at all sir
