The Sophia character was born in Sicily but also raised in NYC. She was a straight up New Yorker with her accent and her sarcasm 😂. She was the funniest old lady on the show. She was played by Estelle Getty who was born and raised in NYC as well. She also starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in the movie comedy Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot in the early 90's. Sadly she passed away from Alzeimer's in 2008, and was also truly the funniest lady in 80's and 90's sitcom.
I always loved Sophia’s story moments that began with the classic opening line… “Picture it, Sicily, 1922…” & then we’d get the inevitable hysterical story as only she could deliver ✊🤣

Yet singers, song writers and actors probably have VERY busy minds! Writing is creative. Singers memorize lyrics & actors memorize lines & take direction from many different people! Sadly, I don't think a busy mind has anything to do with it. 😢
The all time funniest line (imo) I remember Dorothy saying was when they were in the hospital waiting room and Dorothy talks about choking Sophia but she can't because there's life saving equipment around. 😂
My mother had the dvd sets of GG, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, Married with Children and watched them over and over before she died in ‘19. Peak comedy.

One of the best shows. All the ladies were different from one another but each had their own savage side at times, especially Dorothy. I recomend watching all the episodes whenever you get a chance.
The golden girls is one of my all time favorite shows. My mom is 82 , I am 55 and my daughter is 33 , this show is a favorite of us all. My grandma loved the show before she passed as well.
I just had to leave a comment because not only did my mom love to watch the GGs, my daughter and I still do, but our ages are similar which I found funny. My mum would be 97 (15yrs off) were she still with us but I'm 55 and my daughter is 32. 😊
@ it is a show that spans generations of women, all women seem to enjoy it! It was a show that was before its time. It spoke to so many social issues and handled it in a way that no matter what your own opinion was you laughed and cried right along with our wonderful ladies of the lanai.
Just the fact that she was so young in general makes me applaud the makeup crew. I read that she ticked them off and got a face-lift halfway through the series which made them have to work harder and use more makeup to age her lol
Great show, great writing, great acting! They didn't expect that people would love this sitcom about older ladies. Each character is so well-defined. Sofia was Brooklyn Italian! The series also addressed some very relevant issues, like gay marriage and HIV. Hope you watch more!

Another piece of irony is that in one episode, Betty White questions what they do if there is only one of them left… and she was the last of the 4 Golden Girls to pass on.

This has been and always will be my all-time favorite show....it will never get old and never stop making me laugh! It was also good at touching sensitive topics back then as well like sexuality and AIDS so if you haven't seen the AIDS episodes yet, you definitely need to! A lot of the stuff that was said back then, you wouldn't be able to say on TV today. Estelle Getty was the youngest of the original cast and it actually took over 2 hrs (I think 3) to get her ready for each episode.
They were strangers in the pilot (except for Sophia and Dorothy, of course) who met when Blanch put an add for rooms for rent in her house because she was struggling after her husband died.
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much. I was born in the 60s. And we were kind of poor white dress. So I don't know, in Canada. We ran home for about 7 years. I laughed so hard because it was fun bags. And I mean, I would have been in my late teens by the time that shows started. And you didn't give a c*** about if they were young white black Asian. You'd just like the writing and I grew up watching Sanford and son and lots of funny shows that nobody bitched about all the time. I don't get it. It just sucks nowadays, but thank you so much. My fav Sophia comeback was when Blanche said her life was an open book. Sophia then said “your life is an open blouse”😂😂😂I wish I could remember what episode it was but every time I see it that part cracks me up. That one and when Rose and Blanche are dressed as Nun’s and say they’re there “collecting lingerie for the sexy needy people”. That one gets me to giggling as well. The show was so wonderful. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen all the episodes it’s so easy to rewatch time and time again. Anyway much love to you both❤️

actually, they are roomates. rose and dorothy were looking for a room to rent and blanche had her house open for roomates, rose after her husband died moved to miami, and dorothh after her divorce from stan moved with blanche,

This has been and always will be my all-time favorite show....it will never get old and never stop making me laugh! It was also good at touching sensitive topics back then as well like sexuality and AIDS so if you haven't seen the AIDS episodes yet, you definitely need to!
A lot of the stuff that was said back then, you wouldn't be able to say on TV today.
Estelle Getty was the youngest of the original cast and it actually took over 2 hrs (I think 3) to get her ready for each episode.

Oh my goodness. Thank you so much. I was born in the 60s. And we were kind of poor white dress. So I don't know, in Canada. We ran home for about 7 years. I laughed so hard because it was fun bags. And I mean, I would have been in my late teens by the time that shows started. And you didn't give a c*** about if they were young white black Asian. You'd just like the writing and I grew up watching Sanford and son and lots of funny shows that nobody bitched about all the time. I don't get it. It just sucks nowadays, but thank you so much. Absolutely loved this.❤❤❤❤

My fav Sophia comeback was when Blanche said her life was an open book. Sophia then said “your life is an open blouse”😂😂😂I wish I could remember what episode it was but every time I see it that part cracks me up. That one and when Rose and Blanche are dressed as Nun’s and say they’re there “collecting lingerie for the sexy needy people”. That one gets me to giggling as well. The show was so wonderful. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen all the episodes it’s so easy to rewatch time and time again. Anyway much love to you both❤️
