Extremely well balanced, empathetic and well spoken answers. I did not know how music was used / misused by entities in history till I heard this. And to imagine that till now I only associated the Ride of the valkyries with the US bombing of Vietnam.
I still remember a video (in the news in the late 1990s) of tanks used in the gulf war that were fitted with music systems in which American soldiers often played hard and heavy rock and metal.
What a great Human is Mr Mehta.........respecting individual.

Wagner lived in an age in which anti semitism was common. He didnt know any better! And the swastika used to be a common symbol (as Zubin Metha could confirm). Alle Menschen werden Brueder (I wouldnt be surprised to hear Beethoven was anti semitic as well though). Personally I hope soon humanity can see this al as a cosmic play and not take it so seriously any more (that would be a huge step forward). Of course with best regards to people of Jewish origin.
Beethoven wasn't an anti semite. I've read accounts of him composing certain pieces for jewish acquaintances.. He, in his later life, had an affair with a jewish woman, which was pretty serious, if one reads the accounts but it was her parents who ultimately nroke the relationship. Rachmaninoff is another example. In 1912, Rachmaninoff left the IRMS when he learned that a musician in an administrative post was dismissed for being Jewish.
