It impresses me that you can see in this video the desire of everyone to continue enjoying life, even after they saw so much death, destruction, cruelty, misery, and error. This was the end of a cataclysmic event in human history. The human spirit still comes through. More smiles on these people than you would see walking around today.

in fairness, not all saw death, cruelty, misery and "error". some probably saw those, others saw bombing destruction, the soldiers saw deaths. today, we see the death, destruction, misery and cruelty all uploaded, compressed and summarized to us all at once in TV, videos, the internet and history books -- so today, we "see it all" and "know it all". but they, those in the camera, didn't "see or know it all" at the time. they were just beginning to find out. so, of course, they were all smiling. but i agree life and the human spirit is an unstoppable force.
Yes, everyone was young once, nowadays when I look at old people I consider them in their entirety... child, youth, young adult, doing all the same things we've done and will do. We are all travellers on that same journey and that big wheel keeps on spinning. But I think I'd prefer it if it started bad and got progressively better rather than the other way round.

А я все время смотрю своего деда на видео, вдруг попал в кадр, ведь дошел же он до Берлина. Потом ничего не рассказывал, говорил просто: вам этого лучше не знать, было страшное. И так жалко тех, кто погиб молодым. Уму непостижимо: 26 млн людей.

Я плакала, когда смотрела на ровный строй идущих солдат советской армии - наших бабушек и дедушек. Глядя на эти светлые и счастливые лица, трудно представить через какой ад они шли долгих четыре года к великой победе, спасая весь мир от фашизма. Я горжусь ими.

From the autobon to bunkers, pillboxes and the zigfried line.So many bomb shelters just for Hitler alone. Reinforced concrete in everything.

It's interesting to note the physical differences in the Soviet soldiers. There is quite a number of ethnicities represented. For so long I imaged the Soviets to all be physically similar, never taking the time to think how vast the USSR was and all the ethnicities encompassed within it.

It's pretty incredible that they were all able to cooperate and work together so well. I wonder if there were tensions and jealousies?

@@Steelhorsecowboy I am Ex-soviet. I am Asian. There was no racism in the USSR like in the USA for example . We had newspapers, TV channel, schools, cinema studio on our native language. We had equal rights. At institutes and universities we had 2 departements of the same faculty for example. One was for Russian speaking and the second was for native speaking students. The programme was the same. Of course for making a good carreer you should learn Russian. It was rather easy as there were a lot of Russians around you. By the way my grandpa, Kazakh by nationality, was at ww2. And Granny of my husband was there too. She was is Soviet Korean. She was badly wounded there , no one eye.

@@tasmaniandevil8199 Воевали 4 года. Лучших повыбили практически в начале войны. Да и измотались люди. Американцы вступили в войну позже, и таких мясорубок, как Сталинград и Курская дуга даже во мне не видели.
Always refreshing to see actual footage! Notice how Soviet soldier group is different to other allies? Tells you a lot about demographic impact of war on Soviet Union. There is lot of women, men of all ages and different ethnics. For Soviets it was all out war, and it decimated young population. Other allied soldiers are mostly represented by young men of drafting age.
Well, to be fair the US and Britain DID have female soldiers, they just didn't serve in combat. As a matter of fact, they both made their female forces permanent by 1949, with America even giving theirs equal pay.

I went into the Marine Corps in 1977 and we were taught how to fight Soviets. 21 years later I was attending training at the FBI Academy in Virginia. One of my classmates was from Russia, and he joined a local FBI band in singing "Back in the USSR." Truly surreal. I remember thinking we were both trained to kill each other, and now we were going to class together.
Of all the Chronoshistory videos, this is the most haunting. The music contributes to this but, even without it, it would be as eerie. Thanks for uploading these. They're priceless.
The quality of this is mind boggling , by far the best footage ive ever seen from WW2 . really shows the human element to the point that you almost feel as if you are there in person watching it. really amazes me how at ease everyone is considering they were killing each other ony a few weeks / months before . Also incredible how modern Germany was at the time, road and rail almost looks like the 80s Thank you so much for this .

Она медиком в госпитале была , и их в июне 45 г . возили в Берлин типа на экскурсию. За что купил , за то и " продаю".

Delicious is the fact that the americans, the french and the british arrived in Berlin only after two mounth since the Soviet Army conquered Berlin and pacificated it. The Russian Red Army conqured Berlin at the finish of April-beginning of May 1945, and the Americans arrived only in 4th of July in Berlin. As usualy they declared themselves ...... victorious and with full rights, when in fact they were allowed to enter from Soviet Stalin.

Not only russians. USSR included 15 republics, 15 different nations. Today russian propaganda says that only russia won against Hitler. So russia not want remember about help from other nations and western front. in American schools it should also be mentioned that Stalin started the Second World War on the side of Hitler and in the period 39-41 was engaged in the occupation of Europe. And everyone should know the tactics of the Soviet military command, which forced the soldiers to attack head-on, which resulted in huge losses among the soldiers.

Read the documents with discussions between Stalin and Hitler - scholars have now found Stalin to have negotiated very intelligently and responsibly with enormous efforts to stop an invasion without the use of force on either side but Germany just went in and started slaughtering most of the towns and villages they passed.
Of course, if everybody support you with tons of money for free (not loans) to reconstruct yourself and later you cheat everybody to join your euro shit (equally lol) through which you dominate financially everybody, how not come together... Everyone can come together like that

Remember before the war was the great depression, from 1929 onwards. So for most people, despite the peace, it would've been difficult. During the war, naturally life was extremely dangerous and even harder. Consequently after the war the country was in complete ruin by the sheer weight of death and destruction, so life would've been very hard! I guess you could count yourself lucky if you survived it one piece. Picking up the pieces in the aftermath would've been a long, arduous and mentally painful process. Given the level of death and destruction it would've required years/decades to recover for most people. However, there would've also been many people that never really recovered, losing their sanity and health in that whole ugly period before and during the war!

It’s amazing how ethnically diverse the Red Army was. I know the German army and SS were also super diverse but a lot of the nationalities were segregated and organised into separate units. However in the Red Army you constantly see Caucasian males and females walking along side Asians. Very intriguing
How are you surprised by this? The Soviet Union had a wide variety of ethnicities within its borders so naturally that reflected back in the army. And the Soviet Union suffered massive casualties during the war so they were very reliant on their Siberian minorities to refill their ranks and there weren't enough Russians and Slavic peoples to do that. Germany and other European countries on the other hand were almost entirely of caucasian stock. Also the Germany army wasn't super diverse at all it was the national army of Germany so you would have seen only Germans. But yes the SS did have foreign units but most of them came from other European countries.
@@hazzmati because when people think of the Soviet Union they just think “oh that was just Russia when it was communist” but it was much bigger than Russia and had like 13 republics and satellite states etc. the SS was probably more diverse though. German, Belgian, Flemish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Baltic, Slavic, Yugoslavic, Spanish, French, Indian, American and even a few hundred British fought in the SS.

A lot of them headed to the western corridor away from the Soviet’s. In 1961 the East Germans and Soviet’s had enough and built the wall. When the German commanders are telling their own people to run towards the Americans and British, you can imagine just how bad being in Soviet occupation was going to be. If Eisenhower had not held the reigns on Patton, Czechia, would have never fallen to the Russians and hell he may have been in Berlin a month before the Russians. Of all the field commanders the Germans feared him the most.
I've always had a special interest in WW2 history. Especially since dad was such a big part of it, and was raised around a lot of vets growing up. He fought alongside Audie Murphy in the US 3rd Infantry Division, and was there when they blew the giant swastika on top of Nuremberg stadium as well as the raid on Eagle's Nest 💪🏼😎

If you had then you would know most autobahns have speed limits and those very few that do are mostly in Bavaria with only stretches that have no speed limits. From the autobon to bunkers, pillboxes and the zigfried line.So many bomb shelters just for Hitler alone. Reinforced concrete in everything.

It's interesting to note the physical differences in the Soviet soldiers. There is quite a number of ethnicities represented. For so long I imaged the Soviets to all be physically similar, never taking the time to think how vast the USSR was and all the ethnicities encompassed within it.

We had equal rights. At institutes and universities we had 2 departements of the same faculty for example. One was for Russian speaking and the second was for native speaking students. The programme was the same. Of course for making a good carreer you should learn Russian. It was rather easy as there were a lot of Russians around you.
By the way my grandpa, Kazakh by nationality, was at ww2. And Granny of my husband was there too. She was is Soviet Korean. She was badly wounded there , no one eye.

There is lot of women, men of all ages and different ethnics. For Soviets it was all out war, and it decimated young population. Other allied soldiers are mostly represented by young men of drafting age.

Well, to be fair the US and Britain DID have female soldiers, they just didn't serve in combat. As a matter of fact, they both made their female forces permanent by 1949, with America even giving theirs equal pay.

I went into the Marine Corps in 1977 and we were taught how to fight Soviets. 21 years later I was attending training at the FBI Academy in Virginia. One of my classmates was from Russia, and he joined a local FBI band in singing "Back in the USSR." Truly surreal. I remember thinking we were both trained to kill each other, and now we were going to class together.
Of all the Chronoshistory videos, this is the most haunting. The music contributes to this but, even without it, it would be as eerie. Thanks for uploading these. They're priceless.
The quality of this is mind boggling , by far the best footage ive ever seen from WW2 . really shows the human element to the point that you almost feel as if you are there in person watching it. really amazes me how at ease everyone is considering they were killing each other ony a few weeks / months before . Also incredible how modern Germany was at the time, road and rail almost looks like the 80s Thank you so much for this .

Delicious is the fact that the americans, the french and the british arrived in Berlin only after two mounth since the Soviet Army conquered Berlin and pacificated it. The Russian Red Army conqured Berlin at the finish of April-beginning of May 1945, and the Americans arrived only in 4th of July in Berlin. As usualy they declared themselves ...... victorious and with full rights, when in fact they were allowed to enter from Soviet Stalin.

Remember before the war was the great depression, from 1929 onwards. So for most people, despite the peace, it would've been difficult.
During the war, naturally life was extremely dangerous and even harder.
Consequently after the war the country was in complete ruin by the sheer weight of death and destruction, so life would've been very hard!
I guess you could count yourself lucky if you survived it one piece.
Picking up the pieces in the aftermath would've been a long, arduous and mentally painful process. Given the level of death and destruction it would've required years/decades to recover for most people. However, there would've also been many people that never really recovered, losing their sanity and health in that whole ugly period before and during the war!
All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin. Therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words, ich bin ein Berliner!

It’s amazing how ethnically diverse the Red Army was. I know the German army and SS were also super diverse but a lot of the nationalities were segregated and organised into separate units. However in the Red Army you constantly see Caucasian males and females walking along side Asians. Very intriguing
How are you surprised by this? The Soviet Union had a wide variety of ethnicities within its borders so naturally that reflected back in the army. And the Soviet Union suffered massive casualties during the war so they were very reliant on their Siberian minorities to refill their ranks and there weren't enough Russians and Slavic peoples to do that.
Germany and other European countries on the other hand were almost entirely of caucasian stock. Also the Germany army wasn't super diverse at all it was the national army of Germany so you would have seen only Germans. But yes the SS did have foreign units but most of them came from other European countries.
@@hazzmati because when people think of the Soviet Union they just think “oh that was just Russia when it was communist” but it was much bigger than Russia and had like 13 republics and satellite states etc. the SS was probably more diverse though. German, Belgian, Flemish, Dutch, Scandinavian, Mediterranean, Baltic, Slavic, Yugoslavic, Spanish, French, Indian, American and even a few hundred British fought in the SS.

The politics of it all mattered little at the time.
A lot of them headed to the western corridor away from the Soviet’s. In 1961 the East Germans and Soviet’s had enough and built the wall. When the German commanders are telling their own people to run towards the Americans and British, you can imagine just how bad being in Soviet occupation was going to be. If Eisenhower had not held the reigns on Patton, Czechia, would have never fallen to the Russians and hell he may have been in Berlin a month before the Russians. Of all the field commanders the Germans feared him the most.
The British are taught that *they* won the war. I hope this educates them.
