Metro '77 Amsterdam and De Bijlmer/Kleiburg Remix by Trainluvr

Called the “last man standing in the war on modernism”, Kleiburg is a 500 unit bent-slab apartment block surrounded by 10 (out of 30!) others built in the late 1960s to 1972. The Metro dual-viaduct over parkland is the central spine of a well executed, massive government managed transit oriented development. I found it in 1985 on my first trip to Europe and took pictures (under the opening/closing credits). This year I found a documentary and other films about its important place in the history of urban-ism. I spent a week locating proper music for this 3-part remix, featuring two pieces by CAN (70s European progressive rock (aka Krautrock)) sandwiching a Netherlands group's number, done in Turkish style.
High rise housing has always been popular for the rich living in city centers. There are many successful examples of tower block areas for middle and low income residents all over. But some places fail - like most of Chicago's projects and the famous Pruitt-Igoe in St. Louis, blown up after just 15 years of neglect, vandalism and decay. The Dutch tried to make it work with good design and rail access. Much debate has picked over the question of its relative success. I find the place as intriguing as the day I discovered it.

Fun facts: All the apartments are floor through, receiving all day long direct sunlight
The transit guideway is dual so that shadows cast on the ground are not of too long duration
The aluminum body subway cars are designated M-3 with testing done and filmed as early as 1973.
