Merino offers something many of us thought would have been nearly impossible. A left sided option that's as strong if not stronger than Declan Rice. Martinelli again failed to make the pass across the face of the goal for an easy tap in. The boy simply doesn't look up. I'm saying it now nad many may disagree, but he's going to be a liability in our attack. His decision-making is also average. He does recover and track back to defend, which are his best qualities but he's in a position where we need him to be deadly in the final third. We are going to outgrow Martinelli very soon.
@thegoonerfactory certain players have habits which they've developed over a long period. Martinelli not looking up or possessing positional awareness of other players to pick out is a major problem. This limits his assists and the team's goal results. He failed to find 2 easy tap-in passes - 1 in preseason and the other in the first game. This has happened on numerous occasions over the last few yrs. He also doesn't possess any close control of the ball when dribbling. I like that he tries to beat 1-2 defenders but he does get dispossessed often. These are the fine margins we need to address as mentioned by Arteta. Technically, Martinelli can improve but I'd rather we look at another left winger that can also play striker. Trossard is great and clever with the ball, but he lacks the explosive pace in transition
