- Moving out of the city to the country, homesteading, raising children and chickens, and running a self-sufficient farm ...it all sounds nice But what happens when that’s all you focus on?
Does self-sufficiency work?
Can it become your idol?
Let’s have an honest chat.
You feel self-sufficient, but said Christ, “Without me ye can do nothing.” John 15:5.
Wow! We have a similar testimony. Sold our beautiful suburban property when the Lord told us to move to a 150 yr old farm 😳. No experience and VERY LITTLE (to no!) income, 4 years in with 5 homeschooled kids. We have massive gardens, rabbits, chickens, pigs and sheep. Cows are on the way. It is super challenging and tiring but God gives you the strength and grace.
Unless the Lord builds the house they who build labour in vain.

Same here. It's been in mine since Sabbath night (Friday evening). I came across it and decided not to watch it since I didn't think I should dwell on this during the Sabbath hours. But God knows why I was influenced to go onto RUclips at that moment. I ended up saving this then something else caught my eyes which I selected. I remembered that it's Sabbath and came off RUclips completely.
God used parts of this to comfort me. He provided the answers for questions and anxiety I had last night (Saturday night) throughout today (Sunday) in this video. I'll trust Him to provide the rest after I have done all that I can.

You folks just blessed the socks off me/us. My wife and I are in our 3rd year and are struggling with many failures, but realizing that failure is part of His guidance.
Many self-sufficiency channels are people of faith and know this truth. However, they don't talk about the grace and success the He provides.
We just found you (by God's grace) but will be regular followers now.

Fellow SDA here. It’s funny that I just found this video and this channel immediately after missing out of a high paying job that would have supposedly resolved a lot of our problems. U guys just reminded me what I already know but it’s nice to be reminded that GOD never fails. I’m 39 and have to say that the fact that you guys already realize all that at this young age is priceless. This will save you a lot of stress. May God be with you on your journey and bless you abundantly.

Praise the Lord for His goodness! I loved your testimony. Thirty-five years ago the Lord moved us out of Florida to the mountains of NE Georgia. We had one income, a small one at that, but we were convicted to move out of the city and to the country following God’s inspired counsel. He opened up the way for us in spite of our limitations. I am eternally grateful.

I was recommended this video today and was curious. I'm a fellow SDA homesteader and RUclipsr, so kind of curious where you were going with this mindset. I was pleasantly suprised.
You are so right. There is a plethora of Homesteaders and off grid folks in RUclips land. They teach wonderful methods about how to become self sufficient, but rarely ever give glory to God or talk about how He's guided them to the lifestyle or helped them with various things. It's all about what THEY did and how THEY provide.
I'm glad you're not quitting the "lifestyle" but rather the mindset that it's YOU who is providing for your needs as you go back to a more "primitive" way of living as some would call it. Homesteading is less about us, and more about how we can help our community because we are learning and honing skills that will be of great need as the time if the end draws closer.
Gardening, building/repairing things, cutting lumber, collecting water, etc are skills that we can use to help others like the elderly, the disabled, the widowed, the orphaned, etc. It's NOT about self, but about community, and most of all, about how God is leading in all of this.

What a beautiful beautiful testimony. I so wish we were younger n me not being disabled, for I would love love to live that life. We may not live in the City, both retired, live in a spread out small desert town in Southern Cali. We have a 2 1/4 acres, well water, dirt road right in the small town vs the 1st 5 acre Ranch we bought 25 mins out of the small Downtown. We faced Cancer, having to sell our beloved livestock to face what saved my life, via Padre God's guidance, Praise HIS very being! Anywho, you get the gist. I so pray you write a book that includes your story, recipes, 1st planting, trials & Praises, Homeschooling & ALL that you've accomplished via the ppl Padre God put in your path, for we do nothing alone. Name it as you've stated throughout this video, "Partnering with God" * "With God's Sufficient Grace" or whatever the Holy Spirit nudges you to name this very needed Memoir of your Testimony in the Country. 8/19/24 paz be with us all 🙏. Thank you for the reminder that there is no self-sufficiency. God provides for us. A grateful heart and peace of mind are the result of dependence upon our all sufficient God.

I am so proud of y'all, so many people do not realize they to as I will be growing our on garden's, some of us aren't able to move but we are so blessed and yes we all need God's grace and hold on to God's words and able to study everyday, yes we all will need to get ready for 2024 with seeds and praising God for his blessings. thank you all for your testimony of God and you took that leap of faith, that's what it's all about.

Great message, we relocated to Ghana from the US, purchased farmland and it seems like the more I accomplish the longer my list becomes. I needed to hear this so I can relax and focus more on the scriptures and praying for guidance. Being a man and the sole provider (besides The Most High) that can be difficult because our families depend on us to survive.

I definitely DONT WANT TO BE SELF SUFFICIENT!!! We want to be God sufficient, God reliant. And in homesteading especially gardening I love to see God's hand. After 5 years He has.called us home to the Houston area. I can't wait to go home and be in the palm of his hand.Whoot woot thank you for sharing your testimony!!!! So encouraging. Self sufficiency means (to me), disconnecting from dependency upon any type of overlord be it the state, corporate shysters, or 'others'. Never can you disconnect from the source of all life.
Yes, to me it means being able to provide the basic necessities of life for yourself/family, vrs. foolish, modern over-reliance on things which aren't even sources from our immediate community and neighbors, but further afield and completely out of the control, for some of these, of anyone local at all. Namely : Ability to heat your home, for us northerners/keep water and selves from freezing (!) ; other necessities in your home which depend on electricity ( and keeping in mind most homes up here with a wood furnace couldn't operate that without it), such as well/water, a freezer full of food, etc. ; Telephone/communication ; sourcing food/necessities if the stores were inaccessible or empty for a time. To me, growing up on the magazine 'countryside and small stock journal' , most people writing in seemed to take self-sufficiency in that way. The goal to be able to provide the necessities for yourself, as much as possible, for whatever reasons you have, and for me, because to NOT do so is just too foolishly risky. That said, I'm definitely not there yet, God definitely has challenged my faith, surrender and patience with ending up back in rentals and not own property, much less a thriving homestead !

This is exactly what we have learned as well here. Even when our only vehicle breaks down and is in the shop for 3 weeks to replace transmission. We are tempted to complain about the situation which is proof that my faith that God is in control is lacking. The situation was the rod and staff of our shepherd that placed us exactly at the right places at the right time. He is so good and I greatly appreciate His patience with me.

I love this so much!! I never looked at it that way (convicted) us calling ourselves self sufficient may look self empowering/innocent to wordly ppl but spiritually its an idol imo. Amen. Honestly i cannot imagine homesteading without reliance on God. Infact my idea of homesteading is living each day appreciating His grace and looking forward to His provision. I would think it is when people begin to add to it "social media" that their homesteading becomes about creating content for people to like, follow and share their page and even Christians may fall into the trap. Its wonderful that you two had a time to stop and reconsider your approach....it is by the grace of God and we praise Him and thank Him for you🙏

Good for you guys! Self sufficiency, even though we probably all want it, is really just another lie (or at best a half truth), but like you said it can become an idol. We're all very dependent, if you get right down to it. I think it stems from pride, my desire for "self sufficiency". It also stems from control, and my lack of trust in God, but keep working hard and obeying! God will provide. Looking back on our life, and the way God has provided for me and my family, it's hard to believe that we EVER question if He loves us, and if He will provide in the future, but call it being a type-A personality, or having a bad memory, I want to work a plan...MY PLAN...and this is a struggle I've been working on for decades. There's good with the bad of it, though, in that we have been able to make a "good life" for ourselves here. Of course, it's not been without the support and encouragement of so many people, like our family and friends, but also our employers, and customers of my employer, and now our RUclips channel and our supporters therein, both the people watching and the companies we've been able to work with...all of which were allowed or ordained in our lives by God. Our efforts are an act of obedience, and like you said, having a plan isn't bad, but being able to adjust to what God has in store for us, and still be obedient to His calling in our lives is so important.
