You can with time and failure. Nobody has the skills to do this when they are born. Everyone has their path to walk to get there. There is no known way to teleport. There for everybody must traverse the path. There may be people that can guide you along and show some shortcuts, but the path must be walked. Every time you fail, don't beat yourself up for it. That is the process of learning. Look at what you did wrong and wonder how you can change something to improve it. Then go back and try it out.
If you have problems finding where you are failing at this means you need a guide for some time to show you the ropes. Make sure they teach you how to self evaluate yourself. Also to create a process that you can see improvement upon.

Being able to see the 3D aspect of an object from painting from life is so much better to me than a picture...I can emphasize certain things that jump out at me. In the photo, I have to guess that. Sometimes depending on the lighting, you can't even imagine the 3Dness of the face from the photo. What one might thought was prominent cheeks were actually shallow, but was emphasized with a bit more details to pull it out.
That ability to see the person's face from 2 eyes and getting that look of 3Dness..I can't explain it but it is hard to emphasize that from a photo for me at least. Like there's some missing data from a photo when a person's head is turned because the second eye receives data it combines in the brain. The camera only has the data of one eye (usually).

I like to paint my animals but can never do from life as they do not stay still, then the angles and shadows all change if they move and I don't know how to deal with that. Do you paint animals from life?

My nightmare is getting the colors right. Its like there are 50 colors in tubes and you have to blend them and get many more??? it makes me go nuts.
