I got the solid when to many (150) for the size of font. changed to 100 worked. so fiddle with it. I too got the color problem. did as you did and reset it and it worked. maybe has to do with amount of gradual color change. will mess with it (because this is so much fun!) and try extreme color variants. Love your videos.
Cool. Thanks for the report. It worked over and over after I stopped recording, but I think I get the error (and a similar one when I do big maps) when my CPU is overloaded. Might have to ask Santa for a better computer. Ha.
After you suggested to use the interpolate function with multiple colors, like at min 2, i will use it for making the palette. Of course i will pick the color and set it in a rectangle. I know each line has its gradient Thanks
This helped me immensely!.. I was trying to do 3D text in GIMP, and the liquor store began giving me volume discounts... Inkscape is much easier for this... (3D text... not drinking).....
Thanks for another great video. The problem I see with this method is the amount of nodes it produces. If you join the resultant into a single path and simplify it once, the number of nodes is more manageable for an old laptop like mine. You will lose the gradient effect, but you can do it manually afterwards. Sorry for the mistakes 👍
Thanks, and I totally agree. I almost titled this video a "trick" or a "hack" because I think the method pushes to the limit of some computers and laptops capabilities (mine included). Also, why is it buried under a quirky break apart-combine step. I still like it as an experimental procedure and at least when I'm not screen-recording at the same time, I can generate good 3D Text quickly.
Great method for generating a 3D effect. Thanks. I think instead of double clicking to isolate letters you could ungroup then do path union on all letters.
I think the order you select the objects in can effect the results of the interpolation not just the Z order. Thank You for posting and Merry Christmas 2021!
Nice one Rick. How many times have I tried to make a path-'intersection' or path or path-'difference' without breaking the text apart and then unionising it all or combining it all together. Big rookie mistake.. Thanks for your videos mate learning lots- keep up the good work- and again. Merry Christmas to you all. 👍🐺👍
Hey Rick, I love this effect. I know it's been a year since the vid but have a question, please? Can you use multiple colours, let's say, red white and blue. I tried but the closest I got was by having 3 layers selected as per your vid and colouring each differently then carrying out interpolate style, that's when things got funky..."just like the 60's all over again" any ideas or is this covered in another vid? Thanks again. love ya work!
Haha! Things can get pretty funky pretty quick. I'm experimenting with a different method to make 3D text and I'll try to get multiple colors going. You're right- the method in this video doesn't lend itself to easy colors. I'll play around with it!
How would you apply this to a shape? I'm trying to combine your water color state map to text and make it 3D.. I can do the text, and I can get a basic shape to go 3D with interpolate, but I can't seem to get the map of Alaska to co operate... I get a dialog box saying that additional info was added and my results may not come out right.. But I get no results at all.. My map of alaska was done just like in the water color video, and saved as a template..... I closed inkscape, and re started it.. could it be I need to reset to default??.....
I'm trying to interpolate text, I did exactly how you taught it, but it's popping up a message that says "At least two paths need to be selected". Even tough I am selecting both paths (texts converted to path and combined). I have no clue why that's happening :( Does anyone know how to solve it?
Cool! I'd love to see it. I'll add my email to the About section of the Channel page if it let's me. Or, my Twitter and Instagram contacts are already there if you can send through one of those. Thanks!
@@IronEchoDesign Sorry I don't have twitter or instagram. and your hotmail came back unable to send for me. but here is the steps. "Inkscape has received additional data from the executed script. The script did not return an error. But this may indicate the result is not as expected", I have a message like this, it can't be interpolated, what's the solution? , my version of Inkscape is 1.2.2, this appears when I want to make a 3D text effect, bro. If you want to do it, you have to ungroup it first, bro, so we interpolate it by letter, but if it's like that, I think over time, if you want it to be like the direct video, you don't need to ungroup it. One thing I've noticed when interpolate txt on a curved path, interpolation method should be 1 I have noticed it just after my 3rd rewatch on the video :) otherwise txt become broken
"Path Combine" Click the individual letters and "Path Combine." You are my hero, dude. Thank you, been going round and round with this one.
Haha- thanks!!
Thanks for keeping the error in. It's always useful to find out what to do if something doesn't work perfectly first time.
Thanks, and I agree. Errors are part of the learning process. I learn a lot, ha.
I love this guy, he explains soooo good and he has a video for everything
Thanks Rick, fabulous videos.
Thank you!!
Such a humble person ❤️
Thank you. We're all learning and helping each other I believe.
Thanks so much for your videos im learning so much from you.
Thank you! I'll keep making these.
Excellent tutorial and teaching method.
Thanks so much!

Спасибо, понятно все объяснили. У вас хороший канал, мне нравится ваш контент.
Worked first time for me Rick. But appreciate you leaving it in the tutorial ,. always good to have a back up plan! Merry Christmas, Stay safe. 👍😎

Awesome!! Thank you so much. Other videos teach it very manually, exaustive.
Thanks! I like trying to find the most efficient way.
I love your videos. Please keep up the great work!
Thank you!! And thanks for the forum suggestion too in the other comment (got deleted because of link I think). I'll check it out.

you are sooo good

Yes, I think you're right. That method also works better for voice command accessibility I've been told. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, I think you're right. I tried toggling the z-order option and remade the text blocks to remedy. I'll keep exploring.
Hi! I had problems with the interpolation, it seemed not to work, until I changed the values in "exponent"

The newer versions of interpolate don't work at 0. You have to set it to 1.0
You are right. Thank you for pointing it out. I'll have to make a new version of this, and I'll update the description on this video. Thank you.
using version 1.3.2 I am unable to get letter separation, using a double click. Is this a version problem?
Thanks Max

How to fixthe issues of "at least two paths need to be selected
Regarding that issue with extension probably you can discuss it here on Inkscape chat rooms: chat.inkscape.org/home

Instead of selecting each character after Object to Path, can’t you just ungroup and then select all by dragging a rectangle around it?
Yes, that should work too!
omg omg i got this effect using the other new method you showed us. where can I send the how to so you can make a video. for us?

MOVE CENTER PLUS SIGN TO WHERE YOU WANT IT WITHIN OR OUTSIDE OF TEXT.
SET COLORS NOW OR LATER FOR FILL AND STROKE AND SIZES.
CLICK CREATE IN THE TILED CLONES OPTION
MOVE FACING TO FRONT AND ADJUST TO COLORS ETC THAT YOU WANT.
ooh I wonder how it would look if using text along path/circle with the center rotation thing in the middle? off to try it!
I love your ideas!!
