      I really liked the look of this thing. I also wanted to get a pair but i wish they had put a leather insole in there. Perhaps they ought to make another line, called faux heritage where they can get people who arent interested in long term longevity of leather in the boot.
      From a business stand point i understand trying to capture more sales but dont alienate your existing customers many of whom were probably very excited to grab this boot. I wonder what the percentage of people is who might be staying away from this boot after learning about its construction.
      Almost seemed like nick wasnt too excited about it after hearing what was going on inside this thing.
      I am also in favor of rerunning alot of those models you mentioned. And rerun lots of older models from back in the day too. There are alot of people ready to buy alot of boots.. Wish they could understand that.

    So I went to the Redwing website to see what was up with these new boots. I noticed several things, first of all they have almost nothing in stock at all. I'd estimate that more than 3/4 of the Heritage line is unavailable right now. I guess the world wide supply shortages have hit them too. This new boot was in stock in most sizes. I figured either nobody wants this crappier version with the synthetic and manmade garbage materials in the footbed, or the real reason they came out with this is because they can't keep their supply of veg tan insole leather flowing. This would explain why so many of the other boots are unavailable, they can't get the insole leather for them. I also noticed that they changed something on the website. On each shoe's page, if you scroll down to the "Materials Used" section they have removed the entry in the list for "Footbed" or "Insole". They all used to have this and it was listed as Leather, except for the Chelsea boots that listed it as Poron and Leather. Now they don't even tell you what the construction is. This is NOT a good sign. This is the kind of sneaky sketchy crap that companies do when they are about to start cutting corners across their entire line. They are hoping that nobody will notice. I would be SOOOOO pissed if, in the future, I ordered a pair of Iron Rangers or Blacksmiths and got a pair with this garbage layered disposable insole. I would send them back immediately for a refund and order a pair of Wescos. I hope Redwing is reading these comments and realises that they are flirting with destroying their entire flagship line.

    I agree with the comments below. Once he said enhanced comfort, red flag #1 popped up. Foam in the insole was flag #2 and nylon vamp was #3. I get that Red Wing wants to branch out to more customers and offer more “modern comforts” but in doing so they will alienate their core fans who come for the long lasting, all natural materials. I’d say that if they make shoes like this, keep them out of the heritage line. There is nothing heritage about plastic, foam and nylon.

  • @Fitz008888
    @Fitz008888 2 года назад +112

    The exterior makeup actually looks decent and the Oro will patina beautifully, but IMO the draw of heritage boots is that they are a "buy it for life" type of purchase. RWs have a very strong collector community and their USA made boots that are decades old still demand a premium in the resale market. This is because of their heritage (all leather) construction and uncompromised durability. Adding foam and composite to the constriction, especially the liner means these will not last for decades. The composite will wear out and simply disintegrate over time. This shift is essentially turning them into tall "use and dispose" sneakers. Very few will invest the money to resole and rebuild a boot that literally has a piece of recycled trash for a liner.

    • @Vultain
      @Vultain 2 года назад +6

      I noticed this too, it still has a veg tan insole but the felt liner made me need to go up a half size... 🤔 I also wanted it for work(concrete floors 16 hours on my feet). I simply can't bring myself to buy when Nick's is $150 more.
      It does canvas then felt, what I would do for the Munson Ranger to come back. I will eternally kick myself for missing that one!
      Bottom line when you can get the Grant Stone in veg tan with a crepe sole, 3 ribbed shank, leather midsole, and a 100% leather heel counter even with the somewhat faulty grommet (which can eventually be replaced) this is a very very hard sell to me!

      Couldn’t they be resoled however you want?

    • @Fitz008888
      @Fitz008888 2 года назад +9

      @@MrZanzibar123 Of course, but the issue is that the Texon and sandwiched foam are a part of the lower construction and this would not be changed unless the boot was entirely rebuilt. The lining is even worse because the mesh will almost certainly wear out far before a leather liner. To change this you would need to deconstruct the boot to replace it with a proper leather one. This would likely cost as much as buying an entirely new boot. Also the change from a veg tan liner in the footbed to an aniline one means it will yes break in faster, but then also wear out faster.
      As others have said this seems like they are simply trying to lower materials cost in order to increase profit margins. This change will simply push away their core consumers for the Heritage line, giving that business to other companies. Really sad to watch such a historic brand go down this path.

    • @Vultain
      @Vultain 2 года назад +3

      @@Fitz008888 Agreed, I ended up returning mine. I wouldn't have purchased them before I knew they were constructed that way. For me that is too much compromise to justify the price.

  • @jeffloucks2120
    @jeffloucks2120 2 года назад +11

    My take... if they want to add models like this that have some of this construction it's not necessarily a bad thing for the right consumers. Now if they change most or all of the heritage lineup to this then yes... that's a problem for many enthusiasts.

      They don’t care if they slowly bring down their quality while floating high on their reputation of high quality, in the end it’s about short term money and this way they can make more (shareholders will be happy in the short run and don’t care about the long run). You see it happen with so many companies. Stanley for example, a producer of a lot of hand tools is now still riding on their old reputation of quality while their products have seen a steady decline in quality. Same goes for Dr Martens to name another example.

    • @drewweikum5073
      @drewweikum5073 2 года назад

      @@cincyreds62 I mean yeah they’re tough to break in, but any leather footbed boot is tough to break in. Also if you get a well fitting boot from the get go, the break in really isn’t that bad.
      I’m not trying to say that it must be difficult to break in, but natural materials last longer and are more comfortable the longer you wear them. That feeling of a leather footbed conforming to your foot makes any difficult break-ins 100% worth it. Foam and mesh will break down and eventually you can’t do anything about it.

    • @ColoradoStreaming
      @ColoradoStreaming 2 года назад

      I have never understood how people have such a hard time with the break in period. Watched this withing a few minutes of posting. Love the look, it's completely my style. Was about to order and decided to give it a day. Came back 24 hours later, and the comments reflect where I've ended up myself. I don't understand this move to more synthetics, especially at this price point. Especially problematic is the synthetic liner-there's simply no easy way to repair that. And it will wear, much, much faster than leather. So, I'm conflicted. I do love the style-for me it's perfect. I know it's not for everyone. But is this a wise investment? What is the point of a "heritage" line when it's moving away from heritage construction? It just seems a strange move.

    I personally love how these boots look. However, the comments here bring up a good point. Spending $350+ on a pair of boots is an investment customers hope to have them last decades. However the new manmade materials knowingly will not last decades like the traditional Iron Rangers. So it makes sense for all the backlash.
    I can only see 2 solutions to this - bring back the leather insoles like the original Iron Rangers OR drop the price. I believe the majority would just rather have the former though.

    Having owned the moc wedges and Irons and being one to abuse the hell out of my boots an easy 2 week break in for a few years of absolute comfort and something you can trust to last is better than settling for less but these are a pretty big let down. If they were what they said, a true iron upper, on the original wedge, these would be a dream. Irons are slippery, the moc toes always blow out at the toe stitching. These are a match made in heaven. Maybe they were worried they'd sell out there leaders. Maybe they're cutting cost. Maybe there trying to appeal to the whines of the people wearing them for street fashion. But don't call it heritage if it's not heritage quality and definitely knock $100 off the price tag!

    Gorgeous boot. These "collabs" between classics don't always yield that same synergy of their individual parts, but this style does. And I appreciate the thoughtfulness that's gone into the "invisible" insides too.

    Just....wow. That the brains at Red Wing actually thought it was going to go down well that they've stepped DOWN to Thursday Boots quality of materials is amazing. Of course Nick is down with it because he has "I Heart Thursdays" tattooed across his chest but that is really not going to go down well with certain segments of the market who expect better, especially at $350 a pop. And rightfully so. Redi Wing has lost their minds.

    Not a fan of the heavy use of synthetic materials. I was so excited for a oro-legacy iron ranger but will pass on the boot solely because of the use of texon and the mesh lining. Very sad.

    I think these boots are perfect. I actually own a pair of these (#8089) AND they’re very comfortable. Also, I own a pair of black of regular Iron Ranger #8084 and the’re nice but the 8089’s are way more comfortable. You have people typing all these bad reviews and they don’t even own a pair of red wings.. just because someone at another channel say something negative people will follow… senseless.. shave some money ($700) and buy these and a regular iron rangers and compare them for yourself so you can have your own opinion. 🤦‍♂️

    I was trying these on the other day when I went to get my second pair of RW.. (first being 8111). I noticed the increased comfort compared to other IR and decided to sleep on it and do some research. I saw this and Rose Anvil’s video and decided to go with the 1907 Moc instead.
    The look of these is fantastic! I don’t have any preference for the lug sole either. The wedge is perfectly fine in my opinion. The problem lies in the new construction of the sole that relies heavily on synthetic materials that you’d be lucky to get 2 years out of… I would love a Oro legacy Iron ranger so badly, but this just isn’t worth it for a temporary, disposable shoe.
    I really hope RW doesn’t turn into Timberland by trying to appeal to the masses with a no-breakin boot. Even if it’s to cut cost, I would’ve been happy to pay extra for an Oro legacy IR with the same construction as the rest of the lineup.

  • @aphantasiagreyman8445

    Would be nice if the Iron Ranger was on a 360 split welt as an option. Ditch the synthetics and create a real boot. Seems you have to pay 500+ for Nick's or Whites to get boots that are made correctly. Everything less that that cuts corners somewhere I don't care who makes it.

    I have to agree with previous comments. The switch to these synthetic comfy materials is a bad road to go down. He mentioned talking with the board or some crap about the changes. Apparently cost was discussed also to incorporate the use of these synthetic materials. If you don’t like the break in period, buy a different brand. A great boot takes time and you have to earn that durability and comfort. That’s the plain truth. Cheaper materials may be more comfortable, but the longevity is not there. Your boots become throw always. Glad I introduced myself to vibergs and nick’s. Even smaller boot makers like oak street and Truman. Redwing is going to become synonymous with saving money to build a subpar product. As usual it becomes all about saving money and quality suffers. This probably makes my current redwings more desirable now when all the redwings going forward will be on the low end quality scale.

  • @kit2770

    People make too big of a deal out of the break-in period. I mean, sure, it's not a joy, but it's not the hell that many people make it out to be. It's pretty stiff at first, but it doesn't take long to start feeling it improve under your feet. Of course, I can only speak from my experience, obviously, I suppose it's different for everyone. But, in my opinion, the break-in is a sign of a quality boot. When I'm working my way through the break-in, I know the reward is going to be many years of enjoying a great, solid pair of boots that get better looking and more comfortable with time. But if I wear a different pair of boots that already feel broken-in right away, I think, 'uh-oh, what's this going to feel like (and look like) in 5 years? Probably not great'. Keep the synthetic materials out of the Heritage line and stick with the leather and cork. It's superior in every way. Plus, I imagine that 99.9% of Heritage customers would rather pay the little bit extra for that superior construction than save a small amount of money in exchange for an inferior boot. *Keep doing it right, Red Wing. That's what people want.* 🥾 👑

    The only good thing that came from this is the ability to have a real Iron Ranger in a pretty exclusive leather in the Oro Legacy ie. have a cobbler re-sole it! Be sure to have them replace all of the synthetic material for oak tanned leather & cork + a 270 welt. I would do an old school nitrile cork outsole, a Dr. Sole Cord sole or maybe even an urban logger stacked leather heel + a Vibram full lug sole.

    Heritage line MUST NOT have somekind of manmade material. Period. From the way the manager talked about all the new mesh, foam, etc material it is clear that RW is trying to push to the greater mass market where comfort is one of the biggest factor to sell. But selling it at a heritage collection price is just ridiculous. You do not expect people to pay premium price for less durable product. These new products with new material should be put on newer line not heritage.
