Thanks for sharing. But this "create domain" option is not available for the shapefile datatype, right? I tried creating a domain for a particular road shapefile i'm working on, but the "domain" option is not in the "data design" drop down after right clicking on the layer.
Hello. I was just wondering how to create an "other" field to allow a user to enter a value not in the dropdown. In my work it's nice to have a species drop down, but we cannot always cover every species we might encounter.
Good question! The way I have covered that in the mobile world (Field Maps) is to have Other in the list but when that is selected a box is made visible into which anything can be typed. But you can also do that sort of thing with Attribute Rules within a form in ArcGIS Pro. You literally would have a new attribute in yr feature service called "Other Species"
Great guide, but my Domains button is grayed out in the data design tab. I think its due to im trying to add the data onto a SHP file. Maybe this is not possible ?
Is it possible to add this drop down to the pop-up so i can change the settings directly from the pop up and not the attribude ? I want to be able also to change the input from the field app....
@jensolsen2769 By the Field App I guess you mean Field Maps? If you mean AGOL/Portal, then in your Webmap where the domain field is present, you need to create your input form using the FORMS button on the right hand side of map viewer. When that field with the domain is added to your form the popup will appear on your mobile (or radio button). Is that what you meant?
Hi, good tutorial! Thanks a lot! :) How can you share this layer with others to use it? If I exported it to shapefile the selectable domain values disappeared.
@@soniacastrosoto2397 After the join, you are left with those numbers that are the codes for your values. So you could then do another join to a lookup table where those numbers are stored (and the corresponding value)
Yes - you can add a "List" in AGOL, basically the same as a domain (well, more or less!). In the feature service, you can add a field and create a list that will be used to populate that field.
When I create a domain and assign it to a field, the dropdown option does not appear in when I go to edit that field in the attribute table... what am I doing wrong?
Thanks, mate! I really needed a simple and easy to understand tutorial on domains!
Glad it helped!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Yes, correct - you cannot create a domain inside a shapefile. Its for the geodatabase format only.
Thank you for this video. Very helpful tutorial!

Found out i need to Convert the shapefile to a Geodatabase before i can add domain to it :)

I couldn't understand how I could create the domain for feature class from scratch
Hi, good tutorial! Thanks a lot! :)

Unfortunately domains are not supported in the shapefile format so you have to share as a geodatabase.
@@GISCoordinated Yeah, it did the work thank you 😊
@@GISCoordinated How can I join two layers that their attribute tables are created by domain lists? When I do it, only numbers are saved in the fields

Thanks so much! What I needed today!
When I hover over data design fields is the only selection available. No domains or anything else
Are you using a shapefile? They wont support domains
Where are the domains filled in? Only in field maps or similar apps? Or can they do it from a web map in ArcGIS Online?

Is the domain definitely being used for that attribute? Check by going to Data Design and the domain name should be alongside the field
Omg thank you so much for this video!
No problem 😊
Thank you
Thanks
