Time to watch and learn how to use a chainsaw. Tom makes it look easy but it takes a lot of practice to get this good.

WoW as person with over 3 decades of chainsaw experience watching Tom match those undercuts and keeping everything on both side symmetrical even though he can't see the other side is amazing. Great video Mr. S.C.
I'm a chisel and gouge carver, watching him do the equivalent of stop cuts and so on with a chainsaw is fascinating
The sculpture has been beautiful at every single point of its development. Really stunning in its abstract form.
I love your videos man - calm music of people showing consummate skill and knowledge is absolutely beautiful to watch. That guy is surgically accurate with that chainsaw - an absolute pleasure to watch. You are literally able to see the knowledge and experience that this man has - beautiful.
Tom is truly an artist and woodworking master in my humble opinion. Could not believe how it comes together but how smooth a finish he gets with a chainsaw. Awesome series can't wait to see part 3 !!!
Tom should definitely have his own channel. It would appeal to a much wider audience than just woodworking enthusiasts. I could easily see a start-to-finish totem time-lapse video going viral.
Tom! You are the man. A true master with that saw. It’s so relaxing and engrossing to watch you make it look so easy.
I love watching a woodworker also from BC to see all the art and culture that we have
Different kind of woodworking that's an art form got to appreciate it.
Seriously, I can't get enough of this. MOAR, PLEASE!!!
Tom does some badass work considering the size of that bar on his saw... He's a stud for sure . Great video, thanks for posting
Very cool to see that! cant wait for the next one
I admire such people.
Mr. Lafortune needs his own channel STAT. I would watch the hell out of that. I would also love to hear about the individual and spiritual meanings behind the totems and his work. I realize that might be a private journey for each piece but just watching him make them is amazing! Thanks for including this kind of thing in your channel and safe trip to Japan :).
Great job at pumping out videos this week!
Looking amazing. Can't wait for the finale. Can't wait also, for Jessie to try his hand at chainsaw carving. I think a Samurai totem would look great at the entrance to your shop. You should definitely do it.
That was the most interesting and relaxing video to watch, thanks for doing this series!
Good to see you back from Japan. I was afraid you were gonna stay. I loved Japan when I was there back in the 80s with the Air Force.
Way awesome! Looking forward to the next video.
love this series great video
more totem pole stuff! this has been one of my favorite side projects that you've done. have a good time in Japan!
Was really looking forward to the next episode!
Great video. I'd like to continue to see a mix of crafty woodworking projects and basic home construction "how-to" lessons.
Great vid samurai.... I always love the choice of music too...
If I could like a hundred times I would. Absolutely love your channel dude! I look forward to your content every week. I'm becoming a wood geek thanks to your vids. Keep up the good work and if you ever make it to Wisconsin beers are on me.
That's a really good edit thanks for sharing that video.
Awesome! Thank you!
what a beast with that chain saw
The smell of cedar there must be delicious! Thank you for this awesome presentation, Samurai. It's very much appreciated
Amazing, would love to see you do this.
Safe to say that Tom knows his way around a chainsaw. Hilarious. I do believe you're right about that.
Great Vid I'd like more totem poles carving pleeeeeaaaaaaaase
Keep the vids coming!
so cool
i just want to see something finished, and you deserve your deck to be finished so.. go do it!
I was only wondering about this series the other day.......
Good Work and a nice Video
All the people concerned with his lack of safety equipment. Maybe y'all should worry about yourselves and let the old timer do it the way he's always done it. He's damn good at it!
Derek Mcclenahan turns out we would rather have this master craftsman keep doing his art rather than loose his life, eye sight, or other necessary thing. Have you ever seen what a chainsaw kicking back can do to a person?
akshooter271 I understand that, as would I. But unfortunately I don't think any amount of people voicing their concerns on the internet in regards to his safety is going to change his habits. I worked around a lot of old timers in construction and they're one stubborn group of people. My dad was wearing gloves and the chainsaw went right through it and almost cut his fingers off. He was lucky to say the least.
Sharp saw and experienced hands. Nuff said?
Tom Lafortune and yet none of that will matter when you're bleeding out on the floor of your shop.
i like what you are saying. this guy is a master at his craft, he knows what would cause the chain saw lash back, he knows what to do and how to handle it, and he knows how to avoid it.
its like a black smith no longer needing gloves to smith, it would be safer, but they know when they need it and when its unnecessary
samurai carpenter and mtm wood collaboration.
The wood grain is amazing, it looks like damascus
Cool Enjoyed!!
Amazing artist.I hope he is passing his knowledge and talent on to an apprentice
Nice 👍
You could go in Metatron's channel to see some good examples of Samurai armor. That would look cool af.
You should make one mate for your garden 👌
Love your videos! But I was disappointed that you didn’t show the totem pole completed.
Great vídeo my friend ;-)
I found that of all things in woodworking, the hardest part is to learn to fail.
Send Alec all the used chainsaw chains, he could make an awesome damascus out of them.
Samurai Ghost Masks on the totem pole, bro.
Maybe a shop size Samurai Totem (Cigar Store Indian style) with an Alec Steel Damascus Samurai sword in his hand
Woop Woop
When showing a multipart series can you Auto link to the next episode? Just a thought, thank you
Have you ever made a traditional Japanese tub?
Its gonna look awesome next to paintings of our dogs playing poker! But what do you think, Runswithpremise?
Msr saeri carpenter if you would please make more Japanese time lapse video my social studies teacher loves your videos and so do my class mates we've been watching them for the past 2 weeks we love your vids but we finished all the time lapse and we even watched the guy make that chizzle for you. So PLEASE make for time lapsed Japanese wood work vids our 6th grade class loves them -Ainsley
Do you even chainsaw BRO......MAD SKILLS
I think you mean "BRO....MAD STIHL'S" no?
Samurai, u got any info on the hand tools used for native carving? Like how to make them? Or anyone have info on it?
Build an outdoor sauna !
I've so many questions as to why he does things the way he does them. Any chance you can do part 3 with a voice over that explains his process please?
That guy must have a chronic stuffed nose with all that sawdust he's making
Where do you get the music from??
Where was THE CHISEL OF POWER in this video?
Does that hat say New Zealand? That's so cool, i'm from New Zealand
Rob Mckennie as a matter of fact, we were in Auckland for the world master games in April
When its all end you have to build smaller version of totem
Is it me or should stihl sponsor this guy?
Or the gas station :D
maybe they should start sponser some safety gear :D
Erm, he's a husky man...
Little known fact- The first chainsaw was invented by the Native Americans to carve totem poles.
if it wasn't it should have been!
Somebody get that dude some chaps.
Is the sawblade meant to be that dull so it is smoother?
ruben bywater
If my saw was dull I'd never be able to plunge cut or use the chain to rasp and smooth the surfaces. Been doing this for 46yrs and enjoy novice comments. Bwahahahahaha
Tom Lafortune ok i fix them for industrail use i didnt know thanks
I don't have time to watch it now, so I just stopped by to like and comment :)
Your website,,,, Can't order plans for wood tool box,,,no place for my shipping address... Please fix it like the other plans... Thank you....
how much does a bit of wood like that cost?
no face mask, no ear plug, no protective gear ?
no problem.
+ amy-Yaal Yehudai Until a good tinnitus kicks in. Which is a horrible thing to suffer from. I REALLY don't get why he doesn't protect his hearing at all.
Cant decide what to vote on :/
gimme more that goodshit
Blueprints?
Viking Carpenter haha! “Uh yeah, let me just print em out real quick!” 🤓😂
No hurry, I'll start carving only tomorrow 🗿
blueprints? he don't need no stinkin blueprints ,it's art he's an artist!
Imagine how much work and time would go in this b4 chainsaws were available and it all had to be done by hand, I assume using nothing more than axe and knife?!
Stone adze, stone blades, she'll tools, wood mallets, and very important fire 🔥 long process
As always I love your videos and have seen every one (I think.) But I am very tired of that music and I'm sure you're not the only one who uses it. Thanks.
Man some of those cuts had my asshole puckered tight enough to make diamonds. Bit of scepticism towards plunging after I had one kick out on me once.
erm, k
Experience, I have had kickbacks in the past , but my ole man usdd to say , if you learnd nothing from that , put the dammed saw down
I just want to sweep up
Shop looks nice ~ but ~ BUT ~ you may want to use your rifle more often or dust it off from time to time ! Hehehehehehe :) Safe travels to and from Japan.
Craving no chain sawing???
When the shavings count and not the piece of furniture… ;)
What type of wood is that?
cedar
Build a sauna.
I second this
Hey mr carpenter stick some pow wow music in your indigenous carving documentary's or something indigenous ' for background music .
what tribe is Tom from?
robert k coast salish
Very cool keep up the great work Tom
why did he waste all the time and wood in the beginning carving out that shape in the middle when he could have just took the majority of that chunk out in one piece? was he just finding the sculpt he wanted to go for?
A great video, but the chainsaw sounds were way too loud. Totally ruined the chill of my living room 😂
Zylon FPV Yea getting audio right is one of the most difficult things to do.
Hey man, you should think about finding some new music. Your tracks are sounding a bit stale. Other than that you're doing a great job, keep it up.
I know it's not the point but it would of been great to have seen it been done without the power tools.
Sure. Got 2 years to spare?
chisel and hammer? for what?
Details
He probably has bear hands.
50 gallons of fuel later.
Probably a reason he charges 2000 dorrarru per foot of totem.
good job but the music SUCKS! couldn't take it had to mute.
couldn't help but shudder for the 1st 20secs ..... like fingers down a blackboard :(
Why are my ears ringing like Babys? Huh? Whats that? Can't hear ya!
god that guy must be deaf... no hearing protection whatsoever
No disrespect intended but I would of preferred to see that totem pole being carved not chainsawed. Yes I know it is just a way to remove most of the waste and rough out the pole itself, but just something about authentic traditional ways makes me feel that chainsawing it takes that away. Once again NO disrespect to Tom meant.
D Maybe help him find someone who carved totems by hand?
I am sure Tom knows many carvers that do it the traditional way I have mentioned I do not need to help Tom as he does not require any.
D I meant help the samurai find traditional carvers who would film a series.
I'm pretty sure he does some by hand when requested by a customer. Using a chainsaw will drive the price down significantly.
well obviously because he's carving out a cultural icon he doesn't need hearing......or legs too
....oh wait..he's a craftsmen and chainsaws don't jump or stall for him.
g2macs maybe he just didn't want to
Not everyone is a puss. Safety gear was not around back in the day.
Don't try to do what I do , don't want SC to be burying any of his viewers
