It’s now 2024 and I just saw Roddy Woomble live in Leeds last night. I grew up listening to Idlewild and years later I can take my son (18) to see that singer I grew up listening to. He also did a few Idlewild songs too.
I saw Idlewild for the first time in 2000 when they performed this and Little Discourage at Later with Jools Holland. I remember I kept repeating both of these songs from that broadcast, skipping most of the other ones. I got both albums I could find, "Hope is Important" and "100 Broken Windows" After all these years I am rediscovering many of my favourite bands and am pleased to find out they returned to a heavier sound with their latest album, but I should also get the other albums.
Another band that didn't get the recognition they deserved. They had a few cracking albums back in the day. 100 Broken Windows still remains one of my favourite albums ever
They performed this on Top Of The Pops which meant they were really really late for the show I went to. To make it up to us for waiting they said to the crowd "we will play any song you want us to" and people were shouting out the they wanted to hear, and the band played them! Including one about fireworks which they said "we never play this song live anymore, but for you we will".
This was at the Roadmender in Northampton wasn't it? Was awesome but yeah probably the longest wait between support and headliner ever.... I think it was 1h45mins! 😁
Saw them at Reading 1999 when Coldplay were pretty much bottom of the bill on the smallest stage. Literally used kerrang and nme free compilation cds to check out the bands that were playing before I saw them and found Idlewild. Now have tickets to the postponed 2020 tour. Band for life!
Please. If anyone could help me I remember a great song were the video was in a mansion. In each room was a member of the band playing. I thought it was Idlewild but now i'm not sure. It came out between 199 and 2001. I loved the song. But I just can't remember anything except for the video and that it was like indie rock. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.
the emo comment i make before is about me loving this song.. its nothing to do with idlewild or the genre. I should have just used the word "emotional" As for emo not existing until 2000... oh dear the first time i heard the term was about the band The Ataris and their song San Dimas HIgh School Rules circa 1998 Anyway - I really do love this song and recognise you all misunderstood my comment. It had nothing to do with emo music all to do with the emotional content of my post DUR
Ah yes, one of the many great songs from Idlewild that defined my college years. The years following weren't great but improved significantly when RODDY GOT A DAMN HAIR CUT!
Everyone notes they sound like REM (songs like Little Discourage and These Wooden Ideas on 100 Broken Windows) but the chorus on this track and a few others is different, more mid-late 90s pop punk. I didn't even have to mention Green Day or Blink 182
@crackout97 no chance, each to there own, but idlewild has a real edge on any biffy clyro grunge wise, and on the folk theme is distinctivly scottish as it can get. but lol each to their own
I'll tell you who is very underrated, and my wife Marjorie agrees, - Vince Hill! Much more wholesome than Mr Woomble. Incidentally are you related to the Woombles of Wimbledon?

This song has been stuck in my head for 15 years now.
The world is falling apart and my only solace are the songs of my youth. Forever.

I actually saw them at Cardiff university in 2000 when this album came out, and guess what? Coldplay was the opening act and look where they are now.

This sounds like tomorrow, never mind yesterday or 22 years ago. damn, I must be old.
I can't believe this song didn't make their Best of compilation. It charted fairly high in the UK, I think. Plus, I think it's their best song period.
