  • Beer Log: why Vienna lager is the Minidisc of beer | The Craft Beer Channel
    We are in VIENNA - a neoclassical masterpiece of a city and home to a unique beer style. At least that's what we thought. In fact, Vienna lager is incredibly hard to find for reasons we explain in this video.
    This super quick beer log was filmed on location while we worked on our next Beer School episode...all about YEAST. Coming in a few weeks.

    Are there any other styles out there that have nearly died out? Or ones that are coming back?

      The original Irish red ale? so not the hoppy one. I feel thats dying out or hard to find anyway

      @@kw2142 great shout! Definitely being eroded away by increased hopping and bitterness, as well as pale being more popular.

      @@TheCraftBeerChannel a real shame. in fact i can't find them really (outside of Ireland). Brockley Brewery do a good red ale, not too hoppy. But apart from them, hard to find (in London) anyway

    Conrad Seidl is a legend here, a walking talking national beer treasure. They call him the Beer-Pope.
    "Seidl" is also Austrian slang for a small beer.

    A lot of breweries in the US have started to brew “Mexican lagers” and in most cases they’re Viena lagers. When Dos Equis was first brewed in Mexico in 1897, it was an Amber Viena lager, it wasn’t until the 80s when they released the now more famous green bottled lighter version.

    You delved a little into the history of this style; I always like that.
    Maybe it would be fun to try and get a beer historian on an episode of The Bubble some time? Reading (or hearing) about the history of beer and brewing always scratches an itch for me.

    I know this is a little late to the party. But a local to me (Old Nation Brewing - Famous for NEIPA (M43)) released a german lager series that is fantastic. They released a Vienna, German Pils, and a Helles. All brewed contract out of Brew Detroit. Detroit water is some of the best brewing water for lager beer. Super balanced, with a slight nod to sulfates and not a ton of bicarbonate. What I am trying to say is they are killing it. If you ever make it to MI for a brewery tour of Midwest beers. Old Nation is a must stop.

  • @ReaperUnreal

    It surprises me that it's a "dead style." Here in Toronto, there's at least 4 breweries that make a Vienna lager and it's hugely popular in the homebrew scene (as much as lagers can be due to extra equipment). That said, that brewery looks absolutely amazing and I need to hit it up next time I'm in the area.

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 лет назад +1

      I wouldnt quite call it dead it seems! But certainly it is a curiosity when compared to pale lager, the style invented a year later that now owns the world!

  • @benjaminpauser9315
    @benjaminpauser9315 5 лет назад

    if you are still in Austria try the "Wiener Original" by Ottakringer in case you haven't had it already.
    A little paler and less sweet than the Schwechater, but still a godd representation of that style in my opinion

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  5 лет назад +1

      We did indeed try it, but we thought it wasn't quite as close to the style as the Schwechater

  • @kw2142
    @kw2142 4 года назад +1

    Is this similar to Alt bier from Dusseldorf?

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
      @TheCraftBeerChannel  4 года назад +1

      Not a million miles away, but very different process in that Alt is fermented at a higher temperature with an ale yeast, which makes it fruiter. Vienna lager is a lager yeast, so it is crisper and more biscuity but still has some fruity notes from the darker malt.

    Why benchmark modern Vienna lager with Brooklyn as opposed to Sam Adams Boston Lager? It’s one of America’s best selling craft beers and tastes more like the style’s description

    • @TheCraftBeerChannel
